Nutrition and Dietetic Internship

Overview

The CUNY SPH Nutrition and Dietetic Internship prepares entry-level registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) to deliver nutrition care and services to New York City’s diverse populations, as well as nationally and abroad. Through interdisciplinary practical and educational experiences, the program builds the core competencies needed for careers in nutrition therapy, food service systems management, community nutrition, and public health nutrition.

The internship program is designed to help interns cultivate ethical values that align with professional healthcare standards and adhere to established codes of practice while working in diverse, multi-ethnic urban communities. It aims to provide access to supervised practice and the registered dietitian credentialing process for individuals at various stages in their careers. This includes traditional interns, career changers, individuals already in the workforce looking to enhance their roles, and those pursuing advanced degrees.

The internship program embodies the values of food justice, sustainability, and the use of communications technology to promote nutrition. It emphasizes a global perspective on food while incorporating culturally competent approaches to nutrition education.

The program’s mission, vision, and values encompass all facets of professional conduct, and adheres to CUNY SPH’s commitment to public health advocacy, education, and research. Effective communication and knowledge application are essential for developing skilled dietetic practitioners. Furthermore, careful resource management plays a vital role in our shared mission to involve the public in continuous discussions regarding public health policy, promote health equity, and support socially and ecologically sustainable food systems.

The internship program places a strong emphasis on fundamental principles such as competence, accountability, and quality of practice. These elements are crucial to fostering both foundational skills and professional development in the field of nutrition and dietetics, covering both traditional and innovative areas. The program’s mission, vision, and values are closely aligned with the education and training of outstanding registered dietitians.

The courses comprising the traditional track of the Nutrition and Dietetic Internship have been integrated into the curriculum of the CUNY SPH MPH in Public Health Nutrition, marking a shift by ACEND and CDR towards training entry-level registered dietitians (RDs) and registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) at the master’s degree level. Online (distance) track interns are encouraged to deepen their understanding of public health by completing the CUNY SPH Advanced Certificate in Public Health, or by pursuing master’s level education locally. For more information on our dietetic internship’s policies and practices, please consult the Internship Policy and Procedure Manual and the Intern Handbook.

The Path to Becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

There are three steps to becoming credentialed as a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), all accredited through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND):

  1. Complete the required course work in an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
  2. Complete supervised practice through an ACEND-accredited Nutrition and Dietetic Internship program or an Individualized Supervised Practice Pathways (ISPP).
  3. Take and pass the Registered Dietitian Exam.

Graduates of CUNY SPH’s ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship program are eligible to sit for this exam.

In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice. Check your state’s requirements here.

NOTE: As of January 1, 2024, the minimum degree requirement to sit for the exam changed from a bachelor’s to a graduate degree. Didactic and supervised practice requirements remain the same. Details are available on the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) website.
