I am a Certified Industrial Hygienist who has been working in occupational health and exposure science since 2012 and joined the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health (SPH) faculty as tenure-track Assistant Professor in 2014.
Prior to CUNY SPH, I was a Post-doctoral fellow at Rutgers University in the Exposure Science Division after earning a PhD at the University of Iowa in Industrial Hygiene in 2012. At CUNY SPH, I have developed and taught courses in Industrial Hygiene, Noise and Radiation, Industrial Ventilation, and Environmental Health. In 2017, I was named Industrial Hygiene Program Director for the NY/NJ NIOSH ERC. As program director, I have successfully increased the student enrollment and graduation rates and was the principal faculty responsible for our program’s six year ABET reaccreditation, which resulted in no deficiencies. The program has grown significantly since the 2016-2017 admission cycle and has increased matriculated students by over 150% during this three-year period (6 vs. 16, respectively). In 2019, in addition to our continued student support from NIOSH, the industrial hygiene program was awarded a grant from the New York Community Trust to provide academic scholarships to women and minority students which will result in a positive effect on the program, school, and profession through greater inclusivity. My research focusses on quantifying human exposure and risk to environmental pollutants in different microenvironments with emphases on disadvantaged workers and communities. This overarching theme has led me to study populations from Bolivian gold miners in the Andes to nail salon workers in New York City.
