PhD candidate Thinh Vu selected for prestigious HIV/AIDS scholarship and mentorship

Thinh Vu at IAS AIDS 2024

PhD candidate Thinh Vu has been selected for the AIDS 2024 Educational Fund Scholarship Award by the International AIDS Society (IAS). Additionally, Vu has been chosen as one of 13 global trainees for the Fogarty-IeDEA Mentorship Program 2024-2026. These dual honors recognize Vu’s contributions to HIV research and his potential as a future leader in the global response to the epidemic.

The IAS is the world’s largest association of HIV professionals, with more than 13,000 members in over 170 countries. As a recipient of the Educational Fund Scholarship, Vu attended the AIDS 2024 conference in July in Germany with full support, including travel, accommodations, conference registration, IAS membership, and a daily living allowance. The conference serves as a global platform for accelerating progress towards ending the epidemic.

“I am deeply honored to receive both the AIDS 2024 Educational Fund Scholarship and the Fogarty-IeDEA Mentorship,” says Vu. “These opportunities will allow me to deepen my knowledge, collaborate with leading experts, and contribute to innovative solutions that address the ongoing challenges of the HIV epidemic.”

Prior to pursuing his PhD in community health and health policy, Vu has dedicated over a decade to public health programs in Vietnam, making contributions to HIV sentinel surveillance and case reporting. His current research focuses on improving mental health care access for underserved and key populations in resource-limited settings through implementation science.

As a Fogarty-IeDEA mentee, Vu will embark on a two-year program to enhance his research skills in study design, data management, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination. His specific research will examine the temporal trend from HIV diagnosis to ART initiation and time to kidney dysfunction among over 60,000 people living with HIV in the Asia-Pacific region. He also received the Student Success Award 2024 from CUNY SPH Graduate Student Government Association for his participation in this program.
