This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court released its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion that the landmark case established nearly fifty years ago. The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) is unequivocally outraged at the trampling of the reproductive freedom of millions of people across the nation and the detrimental public health consequences that will result.

In response to the decision, 20 states are expected to enact laws in the immediate term, severely restricting or outright prohibiting abortion. The Supreme Court ruling and its cascading effect interferes with an individual’s right to choose and is nothing less than a violation of the human rights of those affected, and will disproportionately affect underserved populations.

New York State stands with those whose health and life will now be at risk. State lawmakers have been vocal in their support of reproductive rights and have enshrined the right to abortion in state law. But for others throughout the United States, including CUNY students who do not live in New York, that right may no longer be guaranteed.

CUNY SPH has always and will always continue to support and advocate for the right to unrestricted access to reproductive health care, including abortion services for all.
