Program Description:

The NYC Health Department, Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV and STI (BHHS), Viral Hepatitis Program (VHP) works to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with hepatitis B and hepatitis C in NYC. The Capacity Building unit within VHP administers multiple direct service programs through contracts with thirty syringe exchange programs, community organizations, hospitals, and health centers.

Hep Free NYC is a network building capacity to prevent, manage and treat hepatitis B and C in NYC. The coalition seeks to foster an inclusive collaboration among all stakeholders to advance hepatitis B and C awareness, screening, access to care, and vaccination through education, outreach, advocacy and support of research.

Pay: $17.50/ hour

Hours: 19 hours maximum per week

Roles and Responsibilities

The Health Education/Outreach Program Assistant will assist with the following activities and tasks:

  • Design materials for the public and public health stakeholders. Materials include written printed materials, social media content, website content, and other materials as needed.
  • Develop health communication projects to meet community needs.
  • Maintain communications and coalition project databases, websites, and social media platforms.
  • Work closely with organization leadership to enhance communications and coalition building capacity.
  • Assist with project tracking and reporting tasks
  • Complete other tasks as assigned

  • Be interested in community health, communications/design and community organizing
  • Be interested in working in partnership with people living with HIV, Viral hepatitis, and other chronic health conditions for better health outcomes

Position Overview:

CEAR is seeking a research assistant to provide support for projects related to community health and healthcare. This is a temporary position starting as soon as possible and lasting through August, with a 25-hour minimum weekly requirement. Compensation is $30/hr. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Outreach and recruitment. Support efforts to conduct outreach and to recruit survey and focus group participants, including tracking of responses.
  • Qualitative data collection. Assist in the coordination, implementation, and co-facilitation of online focus groups. 
  • Qualitative data coding. Code interview and focus group transcripts using Nvivo software. 
  • Administrative Support. Provide logistical support for data collection activities including but not limited to preparing focus group materials, managing audio recordings and transcription, and arranging for and tracking participant incentives.

Qualifications

POSITION: Substance Use and Health Disparities Summer Student Internship
ORGANIZATION: NYU Langone’s Health Evaluation & Analytics Lab (HEAL)

We are looking for Masters-level students to take part in a qualitative research study exploring the role of patient-provider relationships in substance use treatment settings in New York. This full-time paid internship will provide experience in a growing lab that conducts mixed-methods studies of real-world programs. 

About 

The mission of the Health Evaluation and Analytics Lab (HEAL) is to conduct research and evaluations that assist in the administration of the New York Medicaid program and contribute to national scholarship on health and healthcare. We aim to be a national resource for improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable communities and individuals. HEAL is a joint initiative of NYU Langone’s Department of Population Health and NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service directed by Dr. Charles Neighbors, a behavioral scientist who brings together clinical, statistical, and business expertise to research healthcare reform and its impact on individuals struggling with addictions and mental health disorders.

Project Description 

Clinical experiences during patient-provider encounters may contribute to disparities in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes for Black and other people of color. This study will examine this phenomenon to ultimately provide recommendations for delivering SUD care in a more racial-ethnically and culturally equitable manner. Results from this study would directly translate to the clinical care of the treatment population with the goal of improving racial-ethnic inequities and promote patient-centered care.

Position Duties and Preferred Qualifications

We are seeking a Masters-level student(s) who are interested in addressing health disparities who can conduct 1:1 interviews with patients from communities of color this summer. This is a full-time and hourly paid position. This individual will assist with qualitative data analysis once the interviews are transcribed and translated to help the team identify major themes and areas for the program’s improvement. We will provide training/reading materials about different approaches to interviewing, transcribing, and analyzing data in qualitative research. We prefer a candidate with a background in qualitative research. This position will provide the candidate experience working with a growing team of NYU researchers in the Department of Population Health who have knowledge in various fields, including addiction services research. The individual will work towards their personal professional goals with team mentorship.

The practicum student will assist with developing projects related to the Social Determinants of Health. Specific activities include:

  • Coordinate with Manager of Healthy Equity Programs to distribute community health survey and input survey responses, as needed
  • Support in-person and virtual community events for survey distribution
  • Develop and maintain data collection systems using Excel or other data collection system

  • Support the development and delivery of nutrition education programming for a school gardening program, a local community garden and a local food pantry
  • Support two community gardens with harvesting and delivery of produce to local food pantries
  • Support data collection, as needed, to measure success and outcome of food access/ food insecurity programming
  • Conduct a literature review of local and national food access and food insecurity programming and projects and present findings to preceptor though a presentation
  • Support the development of a strategy for coordinating a healthy food marketing campaign in partnership with local community groups to increase promotion of and demand for healthy food and beverages in Bronx neighborhoods

Brief project/program description and population served: 

Seeking a program intern who will work closely with Marcus Meets Malcolm (MMM) board. MMM is a 501©(3) not-for-profit community organization created to strengthen the Harlem community with innovative culturally appropriate programing.

POSITION: Environmental Health & Safety Graduate Intern
ORGANIZATION: The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)

Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution.  DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees.  DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities.           

The selected candidate will be responsible for the following tasks: 

  1. Review and analyze solid waste generation for the past three (3) years for BWT by creating metrics on waste generation trends, types of waste, quantities, etc.,. 
  2. Develop Hazardous Waste Closure Plans for facilities that are large quantity generators, located over sole-source aquifers, and storing more than 185-gallons of liquid hazardous waste.
  3. Review and design BWT in-house solid waste generation management and tracking protocols.

Minimum Qual Requirements

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.

Preferred Skills

– Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the Graduate level in Environmental Science or another science related field. 

– Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
