The Decoding Cancer curriculum, an innovative, standards-aligned curriculum for biology courses, is designed to improve science skills and increase awareness of breast cancer among high school students. Students develop problem solving and decision making skills, apply their knowledge of biology, expand their understanding of genetics, and explore relationships between science and technology. Using breast cancer as the context, students also learn how cancer develops, identify risk factors for cancer and investigate ways to reduce cancer risk. POSITION: Director of Evaluation
ORGANIZATION: The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations (CBOs) to alleviate the effects of poverty and to provide opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish. DYCD’s initiatives include COMPASS, the City’s comprehensive afterschool system, Beacon Community Centers, adult and youth literacy programs, youth employment programs, services for runaway and homeless youth, and community development programs. The Director of Evaluation will: 

  • Commit to the agency’s mission of alleviating the effects of poverty and providing opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish, and help the agency operationalize its mission and vision using an equity lens in research and evaluation; 
  • Develop logic models and outcomes for all DYCD program areas to facilitate decision-making on investments and program refinements by the executive team;

POSITION: Program Design and Implementation Specialist

Reporting to the Director of Program Design and Planning, the Program Design and Implementation Specialist will: 

  • Lead RFP development in multiple program areas in collaboration with the Director of Program Design and Planning and other units;

  • Additional tasks including reviewing and rating proposals, grant-writing, participating in workgroups with other units and divisions within DYCD, and interacting with other City agencies to coordinate joint initiatives.

  • In collaboration with external evaluators, co-design data collection tools, project methodology, reports and other deliverables produced; Ensure external evaluators are abiding by best practices in evaluation, including participatory evaluation, human-centered design, etc; Ensure that evaluation and research designs proposed by external evaluators are appropriate, confidentiality protocols are adhered to and make recommendations to executive staff regarding participation of DYCD in evaluations initiated by non DYCD-funded external researchers; 
  • Design, revise, and enter indicators for DYCD’s Evaluation and Monitoring System (EMS) to improve data quality and use; 
  • Create rubrics for EMS to strengthen DYCD staff’s understanding of indicators and accuracy of scoring. Ensure external evaluations, Logic Models, Theory of Change, Request for Proposals (RFPs), and EMS indicators are in alignment and mutually reinforcing; 
  • Help design data collection instruments such as forms, surveys, focus group protocols, interviews, and observation guides; Conduct research (e.g., literature reviews, summaries and briefs of reports by external evaluators, experts, foundations, and advocates) on best practices in various programmatic areas and agency-wide initiatives;

POSITION: City Research Scientist II / Program Planner

The BHHS’s HIV Care and Treatment Program (CTP) is the Recipient of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Part A grant and consists of four units: 1) Administration, 2) Program Planning, 3) Quality Management, and 4) Research and Evaluation.

The HIV Care and Treatment Program seeks a Program Planner (City Research Scientist II) .

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • Conduct scientific research literature reviews.
  • Summarize findings to help inform the provision of evidence-based program models for HIV care and treatment services.
  • Review and synthesize HIV care and treatment research and programmatic information to assist in program modification, development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Work in conjunction with the New York HIV Health and Human Services Planning Council (PC) to inform service directive development.
  • Guide the development and design of public health programs.
  • Serve as a lead for Ryan White Part A (RWPA) program planning, including, but not limited to, managing the development of Request of Proposals (RFPs) and procurement of services/award contracts.
  • Ensure principles and frameworks of health equity and implementation science, are integrated in program design.
  • Under the direction of the Deputy Director, CTP, lead the development of RFPs in close collaboration with CTP’s Quality Management and Scientific Research and Evaluation Units.
  • Collaborate with scientific research and evaluation staff to obtain pertinent data to help inform the RWPA planning process, including needs assessment, service gap analysis, cost analyses, and priority setting and resource allocation for RWPA funded programs.
  • Develop and conduct presentations to the New York HIV Health and Human Services Planning Council as identified by the Deputy Director and Director of CTP.
  • Participate in the development to plan, implement, monitor annual goals and activities for the program Planning unit.
  • Submit abstracts to national and local conferences and manuscripts to peer review journals, as appropriate

POSITION: Syringe Service Program Coordinator
ORGANIZATION: Washington State Department of Health, Division of Disease Control and Health Statistics (DCHS), Office of Infectious Disease (OID)

This new position will be an integral part of our Drug User Health Team, working closely with our Harm Reduction & Drug User Health Advisor (Tim Candela) and our Overdose Education & Naloxone Distribution Consultant (Sean Hemmerle).

Reporting to the Integration, Hepatitis C & Drug User Health Programs Manager, the Syringe Service Program (SSP) Coordinator provides leadership and is responsible and accountable for stakeholder engagement and mobilization efforts that increase access to and utilization of syringe service programs (SSPs) and related efforts to address health disparities and health inequities in communities disproportionately impacted by infectious disease and overdose. This includes strategic initiatives to integrate services into SSPs, such as infectious disease screening and linkages to care services, overdose education and naloxone distribution, and a variety of other health and social services. This position works collaboratively across the OID providing subject matter and technical expertise to all other OID Units on issues related to SSPs and service integration within SSPs.

Duties Include

  • Developing and implementing new projects that increase the integration of services, such as infectious disease screening and linkage to care, into SSPs.
  • Utilizing formal and informal data and other relevant information to inform the creation or revision of projects focused on SSPs.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on SSPs, maintaining up-to-date information on SSP research, best practices, and promising approaches.
  • Convening meetings of SSPs and key partners to provide critical updates, ensuring information sharing, and fostering collective strategizing to overcome identified challenges.
  • Providing training and capacity-building assistance to new SSPs and existing SSPs interested in service integration or expansion.
  • Representing OID’s SSP-related work to the public, other state agencies, elected officials, media, etc., including representing OID on SSP-related issues of high visibility or sensitivity, as necessary.
  • Managing all aspects of the statewide SSP supply clearinghouse, including relationships with supply vendors, allocations of supplies to SSPs, and working closely with operations staff related to supply procurement issues.

  • Utilizing successful interpersonal and public speaking skills to mobilize people who use drugs adversely affected by hepatitis, overdose, HIV, and STDs.
  • Using harm reduction principles in support of people who use drugs adversely affected by hepatitis, HIV, STDs, and overdose.

Job Description:

Since 1997, the CAPS Visiting Professor (VP) program has provided intensive training and mentoring to support the development of early-career researchers across the United States. Each year a small number of scientists are selected to participate in the program. The VP Program is designed to assist investigators already conducting HIV-prevention research with minority communities in the United States to improve their programs of research and obtain additional funding for their work. 

Participants will:

  • Spend six weeks in San Francisco for three summers.
  • Receive round-trip airfare to San Francisco and a monthly stipend during the summer program.

Founded in 1996, The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is an innovative think tank that connects academics, activists, and policy-makers to promote efforts to dismantle structural inequality. Similar to movements for social and restorative justice from around the world, this network of Mothers and families has provided a model for social movements that are currently searching for sustainable approaches to advocacy and reform.
