The Harrison C. Spencer Award

At its 2021 Annual Meeting on March 25, the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) presented the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) with the Harrison C. Spencer Award for Outstanding Community Service.

The prestigious award was created to honor Dr. Spencer, a pioneer in public health with a long-standing commitment to principles of social justice with a focus on community engagement to address the social determinants of health.

CUNY SPH, which celebrated its fifth anniversary as a consolidated independent college within CUNY last month, is being recognized for its recent work to promote population health, especially amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dean Ayman El-Mohandes accepted the award on the school’s behalf.

The Spencer Award Certificate“It honors me tremendously that the name of our school and that of Harrison Spencer are in any way linked,” he said. “We are very, very proud to engage service as an essential component to our scholarship, both in education and in research. We hope that this prize given to us in the name of a very dear friend will only be an incentive for us to continue to improve, to continue to learn, and to live up to this prize over the years.”

The Spencer Award is given annually to an ASPPH-member, CEPH- accredited school or program of public health demonstrating a major institutional commitment to addressing community needs through education, practice, and/or research.
