Please join CUNY SPH for the next Lunch with a Leader session in which the CUNY SPH Office of Public Safety will be presenting the hybrid talk, “Your Personal Security: How to stay safe and aware in the workplace and daily life.”

Attendees will learn how to remain vigilant and ensure their personal safety both in the workplace and their everyday activities. Presenting from CUNY SPH’s Office of Public Safety will be Lt. Desiree Joyner, Corporal Edwin Rodriguez Jr., Specialist Dawn L Murrain, and from The City College of New York, Specialist and Community Affairs Liaison, Taish Rochester.

About the speakers:

Lieutenant Desiree Joyner has worked for the CUNY Public Safety Department for 21 years, 10 of which have been with CUNY SPH where she is currently the Assistant Director of Public Safety. Lt. Joyner is a certified NYS Peace Officer, ASP Tactical Baton Instructor, ASP Tactical Handcuff Instructor, NYS Municipal Training Firearms and Deadly Physical Force, TO-SPOT Instructor, FEMA Terrorism Awareness, New Mexico Tech Incident Response to Terrorist Bombing Instructor, New Mexico Tech Understanding and Planning for School Bomb Incidents Awareness, NYPD Crime Prevention and Methods of Security, NYS Citizen Preparedness, DCJS General Topics Security Guard instructor.

Lt. Joyner is an active member of several CUNY SPH and Harlem community committees. She enjoys quality time with her family and is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of community members.

Corporal Edwin Rodriguez, Jr. has worked for CUNY SPH for close to 4-years. In 2004, he began his CUNY career in the department of Public Safety at Hunter College.

Cpl. Rodriguez is a former Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and is currently a General Topics Instructor for security for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. He also holds a certificate in Forensics and Investigations from Texas A&M University and is currently completing a degree in Information Technology. Corporal Rodriguez enjoys family time with his two grandchildren.

Specialist Dawn Lynda Murrain is a former U.S. Army Reservist who began her career with the CUNY Department of Public Safety in 2007 at City College of New York. Before joining CUNY SPH in 2016, Spc. Murrain worked at the CUNY Graduate Center and the School of Professional Studies. Prior to her time at CUNY, she was employed at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Specialist Murrain is a certified instructor in First Aid, CPR, AED, Narcan, and Stop the Bleed. She is also certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice as a Security Guard instructor and is a commissioned Notary Public in New York State. In her personal life, Spc. Murrain is an avid fan of the New York Knicks, loves playing Scrabble, and going on cruises with her family.

Specialist Taish Rochester, known as “Rocky” to most, has served the CUNY Department of Public Safety for twenty-five years. A Public Safety Officer, she currently works at the City College of New York (CCNY), leading investigations, collaborating with external law enforcement agencies, and working closely with Student Affairs, Student Life, and campus stakeholders to ensure the safety and well-being of the CCNY community.

As a Community Affairs Liaison, Spc. Rochester is deeply committed to bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community, fostering trust, transparency, and proactive engagement. She also serves as the LGBTQ+ Liaison, advocating for inclusivity and safety across campus spaces.

Spc. Rochester’s passion lies in empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to stay safe, prepared, and resilient in the face of emergencies.

We encourage staff and faculty to attend in-person, but there will be an option to take part virtually.

Please note this lecture will be held in-person. Light refreshments will be served and attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches.
