Virtual Dean’s Grand Rounds Series
The CUNY SPH Center for Immigrant, Refugee, and Global Health (CIRGH) invites you to a special event in cooperation with the Dean’s Grand Round Series: a virtual panel discussion exploring the challenges facing Afghanistan at this critical moment in history. Media headlines focus on desperate efforts to flee, internal chaos and thousands of asylum-seekers in Qatar, Germany and elsewhere. While acknowledging this suffering, the panel will go beyond the headlines to understand better how local non-governmental organizations are supporting communities to move forward, the options facing women under Taliban rule and the choices facing the United States and others in the months ahead.

The panel will be moderated by Kathleen Cravero, a Distinguished Lecturer at CUNY SPH and Director of the CUNY SPH Center for Immigrant, Refugee, and Global Health, with a special introduction by CUNY SPH Dean Ayman El-Mohandes.
Panelists include:
• Zuhra Bahman is the Country Director of Search for Common Ground in Afghanistan. She has worked in the peace-building and human rights field for 20 years. Ms. Bahman has been actively involved in the peace process in Afghanistan and was a youth delegate in the First Bonn Conference in 2001. She previously served as the Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Women, Peace and Security and prior to that worked with the UN Women’s Afghanistan office.
• Fatiha Serour is an international development and peace-building expert with over 25 years experience. She has held numerous positions within the United Nations, international non-profit sector and academia. Among other positions, Dr. Serour served as United Nations Assistant Secretary-General in Somalia and has been deeply engaged in development and peace-building efforts there and in other countries. She is a Co-founder of Justice Impact Lab and a member of the Africa Group of Justice and Accountability. She is a passionate advocate of women’s rights, social justice and the fight against impunity.
• Jacob Kurtzer is Director and Senior Fellow with the Humanitarian Agenda of the Center for International and Strategic Studies (CSIS), an initiative that explores complex humanitarian challenges. Before joining the CSIS, Mr. Kurtzer enjoyed a distinguished career with the International Committee of the Red Cross and with Refugees International, serving both at country level and as an advocate in the United States and Canada. Mr. Kurtzer began his career as a legislative assistant in Congress covering domestic and foreign policy issues.
