Dr. Claudia Calhoon

On January 26, Claudia Calhoon, a student in the Health Policy and Management track, successfully defended her dissertation, “The Health Impacts of the Trump Administration among California Immigrants Dissertation Committee.” Her dissertation committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Sean Haley.

“I am exceptionally grateful to so many people, but especially to my committee for encouraging me to explore the health effects of punitive and restrictive immigration policy using California Health Interview Survey data,” says Dr. Calhoon. “I especially thank my chair Sean Haley, who endorsed my topic before anyone else was fully on board. Quantitative and programming guidance and support from the Office of the Dean at CUNY SPH were crucial in being able to undertake my analysis. I hope the findings from my dissertation will support advocates and service providers working to counter punitive and restrictive immigration policies and contribute to efforts to achieve health equity in our nation.”

Dr. Calhoon is currently searching for a role in which she can advance efforts to address structural determinants of health including immigration. She is open to teaching and research positions or to work in public policy settings.
