CUNY SPH welcomes Senior Scholar Jeffrey V. Lazarus

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Jeffrey V. Lazarus to his new role as CUNY SPH Senior Scholar. He is currently collaborating with the school on a series of international studies around government response to COVID-19 and on confidence in a vaccine.

Dr. Lazarus serves as head of the health systems team at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Spain. He is Vice-Chairman of the board of the EASL International Liver Foundation and co-chair of the HIV Outcomes Beyond Viral Suppression Coalition. He is the author of more than 200 publications including a co-author of the Lancet GastroHep Commission on Viral Hepatitis (2019), and lead author of The Lancet HIV series “HIV outcomes beyond viral suppression” (2019) and COVID-SCORE, Nature Medicine and PLOS ONE (2020).

“It has been an honor to work with Dr. Lazarus on our recent COVID-19 vaccine confidence project and we are thrilled to welcome him officially to our spectacular team of faculty,” says CUNY SPH Dean Ayman El-Mohandes.

Previously, Dr. Lazarus worked for 11 years at WHO Europe and 3 at the Global Fund as well as serving as the founding director of Health Systems Global and the board chair of the foundation AFEW International.

Currently, Lazarus leads three viral hepatitis projects piloting new models of care across Europe and is a co-investigator of INTE-AFRICA, a European Commission funded cluster RCT in Tanzania and Uganda. He is also currently a commissioner of the EASL-Lancet European Liver Commission, chair of the HIV 4th 90 Consensus Statement and on the public health taskforce of The Lancet COVID-19 Commission.
