Assessment Committee

Background

The CUNY SPH Assessment Committee is a central part of our self-governance structure incorporating student, faculty, and staff input to ensure we are building an institution that reflects our shared goals. The committee’s mandate reads:

As stipulated in the bylaws of the SPH GC, the committee is broadly charged with the development and implementation of assessment plans. These plans include but are not limited to the following 3 themes:

  1. Evaluate the impact of curricular instruction – primarily supported through the analysis of course exit surveys.
  2. Assess student, alumni, faculty, staff, preceptor and employer experiences – supported through the collection of ad-hoc surveys including COACHE.
  3. Assure adherence to accreditation requirements – primarily supported by coordinating with staff leading CEPH evaluations.

Central to the charge of the committee is the harmonization of the diverse data collected to support longitudinal analysis. In addition to harmonized survey and program evaluation data, the committee will maintain a high-level summary record of issues brought to or raised by the committee and the status of proposed solutions.

Below, we provide a summary of work to which the committee has contributed.

If you are a member of the SPH community and you have an issue you would like to be brought forward to the committee, please email Alexis Feinberg, Associate Director of Institutional Research: Alexis.Feinberg@sph.cuny.edu

Institutional infrastructure

  • Recognized the opportunity to expand fieldwork and capstone support, originally provided through library services, into a dedicated Office of Experiential Learning.
  • Consulted on the creation of a staff advising office which provides administrative support for students, yielding more opportunities for faculty to mentor students about research and careers while giving students greater clarity about where to direct questions about course sequencing or financial concerns.
  • Developed a review process and provided recommendations and revisions to self-study reports, streamlining the process for regular program evaluations including reaccreditation.
  • Advised on the construction of harmonized syllabi and course templates.
  • Advised on the expansion of asynchronous modules across courses.

Student services

  • Solicited student feedback and advised on the construction of the Latte Lounge.
  • Recognized school-wide concerns about limited support for students learning to code for the first time and advised on the implementation of R skills labs within the core curriculum.
  • Facilitated official communications through more convenient points of contact including text messaging and personal email.
  • Facilitated the process for CPH exam cost reimbursement.
  • Advised on the expansion of asynchronous modules across courses.
  • Began data collection of SPH alumni salary (to ensure our graduates remain competitive).

Faculty support

  • Identified room for development, through peer institution survey data, for increased investment in faculty mentorship and advised on the organization of current mentorship programs, including participation in NCFDD.
  • Advised on the current compensation framework for course development.
  • Evaluated the extent to which courses have been subject to grade inflation (as of writing, no evidence).
