2016 CUNY SPH Student Innovation Challenge

Do you have an innovative public health idea? Submit it to the CUNY SPH Student Innovation Challenge! Held in conjunction with National Public Health Week (April 4 10), the Challenge, now in its second year, is designed to bring out creative ideas to tackle the public health problems of the 21st century.

Here are the Guidelines:

We”re looking for a two-page concept paper, e-mailed to Dr. Ashish Joshi, Assistant Dean of Students, ashish.joshi@sph.cuny.edu, by April 1, 2016.

Please including the following information:

1. 1. Focus Area Addressed
      CUNY SPH has five strategic focus areas:
      • Preventing Chronic, Non Communicable Diseases
      • Population Informatics and Social Marketing
      • Food, Nutrition and Health
      • Immigration and Global Health
      • Maternal, Child, Sexual and Reproductive Health

      Specify which of the focus area(s) you have chosen and why.

   2. Specific Public Health Problem
      Provide a brief description of the problem you are seeking to address, how it relates to the focus area, and why you are focusing on that issue. Be sure to discuss the wider significance of the issue beyond your own personal interest.

      What specific populations are being impacted by this issue? How will your solution improve the lives of these communities and/or populations?

1. 1. Innovation
      How is your proposed approach innovative? What does it accomplish compared to what currently exists?

1. 1. Evidence Based Approach and Assessment
      What evidence is available to support your proposed approach? What outcomes can be measured and how would they be measured? How might the wider impact of the proposed initiative be measured and evaluated beyond the specific outcomes?

1. Implementation Plan
   How do you plan to translate your proposed idea into practice to benefit your target population? What resources are needed to implement this approach? Are there partners to collaborate with on your idea? Are there specific funding opportunities you have in mind?

Finally — Be sure to make your solutions “SMART”:

✔Measurable
✔Achievable
✔Relevant
✔Time-bound

The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 1.

A select group of finalists will be notified on Tuesday, April 5, and each will be invited to give a 15-minute presentation on Friday, April 8 where they will defend their ideas.

All CUNY SPH students are invited to join us at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy at 55 W 125th Street on April 8 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm to hear finalists pitch their ideas. Light refreshments will be served.

Three winners will receive an award of $250 each and guidance in the form of a continuation plan to facilitate the innovative idea proposed.
