Counseling and Wellness Team Bios

Cesar León, PhD 

Dr. Cesar León is a NYS licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Fordham University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. He has extensive experience working in college, hospital, and community settings providing personalized therapy rooted in his training in psychodynamic, interpersonal-relational, and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) approaches.

As a clinician, Dr. León specializes in insight-oriented, person-centered therapy and works with students on various issues including anxiety, depression, identity exploration, life transitions, academic stress, family and relationship issues, and career concerns. Grounded in a deep respect for diverse experiences, he explores multicultural and intersectional perspectives while appreciating the broader social context that shapes each person’s unique experiences.

As director, Dr. León is committed to advancing Counseling and Wellness Services as an essential hybrid support service that provides high-quality, culturally responsive, and accessible mental health care and wellness outreach for all CUNY SPH students, while also offering responsive consultation and education for staff and faculty.

Outside of his professional work, Dr. León enjoys learning, exercising, and spending time with loved ones.

Sherry Adams, LCSW

Sherry Adams, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker and proud graduate of CUNY (CCNY) and Stony Brook (SUNY). With a strong background in supporting students in higher education, she takes a trauma-responsive approach rooted in cultural humility, working collaboratively to identify and build on each student’s strengths. Highly empathic and attuned to individual needs, Sherry tailors her approach to honor each client’s unique timeline for growth and action.

Sherry has extensive experience providing care to diverse populations and is deeply committed to LGBTQI+ affirming practices. At CUNY SPH, she has actively contributed to making the school a more inclusive and affirming space for LGBTQI+ students.

Outside of her work, Sherry enjoys expressing her creativity through photography and songwriting.

Deborah Nevarez

Deborah Nevarez is a Student Wellness Intern in the Counseling and Wellness Services department at CUNY SPH. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in social work at the Silberman School at CUNY Hunter College, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree.

Deborah is deeply committed to promoting mental health and well-being among students in higher education. Guided by principles of cultural humility and inclusivity, she takes a strengths-based approach to support her peers in overcoming challenges, fostering personal growth, and building resilience. She is particularly passionate about advocating for young people and marginalized communities, including low-income and economically disadvantaged populations and the LGBTQI+ community. Deborah prides herself in creating a welcoming and affirming environment when counseling students at CUNY SPH.

Outside of her studies and internship, Deborah enjoys the journey of understanding herself better, making memories with her family and friends, and listening to music.
