Path to creating a NY State Alcohol Policy Framework

New York State Alcohol Policy Summit I: Local Action, Statewide Solutions: The goal of the first Summit was to raise awareness of alcohol use patterns, related harms, and recent legislative changes to create greater alcohol availability. The Summit featured an overview of alcohol consumption patterns and related harms in NY State, an overview of the importance of policy-level approaches to addressing alcohol use, panel discussions pertaining to community impacts, alcohol prevention, effective policies, and emerging research. The summit included facilitated break-out discussions among attendees where they shared their experiences, identified policy needs, and suggested strategies for future action. Summit 1 was sponsored by the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy and the NYS Public Health Association.

Regional Alcohol Policy Meetings: The goal of the six regional meetings was to raise awareness about excessive alcohol use patterns in every NY county and to identify potential policy options to reduce alcohol related harms.  Attendees participated in small group discussions on key alcohol-related issues facing their communities, policy approaches that might be most effective, recommended next steps, and ranked policy priorities. The 6 regional meetings were supported by the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy and the NY State Office of Addiction Services and Supports’ Division of Prevention (OASAS).

New York State Alcohol Policy Summit II: Local Action, Statewide Solutions: This online event serves as is the culmination of Summit I and the regional meetings. It will review alcohol use patterns and health risks for NY State and add new information related to the inclusion of alcohol use in statewide strategic planning initiatives, as well as a brief overview of recently released national reports on the relationship between alcohol and health.  The meeting will review alcohol concerns and priorities identified during previous meetings. The top three recommended action and policy steps will be presented for discussion and approval. The resulting endorsement will create an alcohol policy framework for NY State. The event will conclude with next steps, including the identification of work groups focused on supporting specific alcohol policy action. Summit II is sponsored by the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy and the New York State Department of Health Alcohol Surveillance and Epidemiology Program.
