Last month, students in the Dr. Michael Apa Scholarship in Oral Population Health program had the unique opportunity to shadow the team at Apa Aesthetic, one of New York City’s leading aesthetic dental practices, renowned for its cutting-edge proprietary technology and innovative approach to care.

During their visit, the scholars gained firsthand insights into the practice’s advanced techniques, state-of-the-art equipment, and the business operations that support its global reputation. The experience offered a behind-the-scenes look at how a successful, high-profile health business operates at the intersection of technology, client service, and entrepreneurship.
While these students are pursuing careers in public health, the opportunity reflects Dr. Apa’s generosity and commitment to supporting their professional growth. The visit also reflects a shared interest in advancing oral health outcomes at the population level. By exposing scholars to innovations in clinical technique and patient-centered practice, the experience deepens their understanding of the broader oral health ecosystem—insight they can carry into public health research, policy, and programming.
Reflecting on the visit, Dr. Liya Mohammed, 2024 Apa Scholar, shared:
“Visiting Apa Aesthetic was a unique and eye-opening experience. We met Dr. Apa and his team, toured the clinic, and learned how their in-house ceramists bring innovative designs to life. Watching the dentists at work—and seeing the precision and rapport they bring to patient care—was a highlight. It was a privilege to get an inside look at the innovation and inner workings behind such a renowned practice.”
The Dr. Michael Apa Scholarship Program—the first of its kind among schools of public health—provides financial support and applied learning opportunities to CUNY SPH students from New York committed to charting careers in population oral health. Shadowing at Apa Aesthetic is one of the many ways the program recognizes and invests in the hard work and dedication of its scholars.
