CUNY SPH is delighted to welcome Dr. Cesar León to the staff as director of wellness and counseling.
Dr. León, a native of Harlem and Washington Heights, brings a wealth of experience in promoting mental health and wellness. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s in applied psychology from New York University, and a PhD in counseling psychology from Fordham University.
Dr. León has dedicated his career to empowering individuals through direct clinical care and leadership roles. His career began as a licensed guidance counselor at nearby A. Philip Randolph High School in Harlem, where he led efforts to support under-resourced students. After leaving this role to complete his doctoral degree and a clinical internship at Columbia University Medical Center, he then served as a bilingual psychologist and clinical intake director at the community-based Audubon Clinic in Washington Heights. There, he led several clinic improvement projects, established and oversaw intake procedures, and provided therapeutic support services in both English and Spanish.
Most recently, Dr. León served as a licensed psychologist at Ramapo College of New Jersey where he provided clinical care and directed successful diversity initiatives that significantly increased mental health service utilization among historically underrepresented students.
At CUNY SPH, Dr. León aims to leverage his experiences to establish the Counseling and Wellness Center as a premier hybrid support service that provides high-quality, culturally responsive and accessible mental health care and wellness outreach for students, in addition to responsive consultation and education for staff and faculty.
In his free time, Dr. León enjoys learning, exercising, playing sports, and traveling with his family. He is also an avid New York Giants and Yankees fan.
