New York, NY | 19 September 2024- The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) will be among the supporters at a side-event during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) week.

The event, “MASLD and MASH: prioritizing a global public health threat,” hosted by the Economist Impact, will focus on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its more advanced form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which are highly prevalent, serious yet under-recognized public health threats affecting one in three adults worldwide.

The event will open with a fireside chat with:

  • H.E. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, Qatar Ministry of Public Health
  • David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz, Director General, National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubiran

It will then be followed by a panel discussion, in which CUNY SPH Professor of Global Health Dr. Jeffrey V. Lazarus will partake. He will be joined by heads of the World Obesity Federation, Joep Lange Institute, and the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

“This event represents a pivotal moment for CUNY SPH to further our commitment to advancing liver health,” says Dr. Lazarus. “There is an urgency to address MASLD and MASH within global public health frameworks, similar to other non-communicable diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Building on the launch of our multi-stakeholder NYC-based health initiative called MASH Cities, this UN side-event will allow us to not only deepen our impact within our communities but also amplify our efforts on an international level. We need to end the MASLD/MASH public health threat here at home in the Big Apple and globally.”

The event has received financial support from CUNY SPH and the CUNY SPH Foundation, alongside Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim and Echosens.

Additional information:
This event will invite key stakeholders, including multilateral organizations, policymakers and influencers, civil society and/or patient organizations, and key opinion leaders within MASLD/MASH and other NCDs. It will also examine the socio-economic impacts, explore ways to enhance global awareness, and discuss potential policy measures to end the MASLD/MASH public health threat by 2030.

Following the event, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will host a debrief event reception (5-630 PM) alongside the MASH Cities team (a NYC-based health initiative), including Dr. Ayman El- Mohandes (Dean of CUNY SPH), Dr Jeffrey V Lazarus (CUNY SPH) and Dr Meena Bansal (System Chief, Division of Liver Diseases and Director of MASH Center of Excellence, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai). Attendees can RSVP by emailing Lorraine Clarke-Hewitt at lorraine.clarke-hewitt@mssm.edu before September 21st.
