Effective June 1, CUNY SPH Professor Ilias Kavouras will assume the role of Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Memphis School of Public Health.
In this new role, Dr. Kavouras will lead efforts in academic program planning, course scheduling, graduation, experiential learning, and institutional effectiveness. Dr. Kavouras will also supervise, monitor, and maintain data for CEPH and CAHME accreditations and lead the self-study and final reporting efforts toward the accreditation.
“In his nearly six years at CUNY SPH, Dr. Kavouras has made vital contributions to the upward trajectory of the school,” says Dean Ayman El-Mohandes. “We wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career. Dr. Kavouras will be joining a dear colleague, Dr. Ashish Joshi, Dean at the University of Memphis School of Public Health, and we wish them both great success.”
Dr. Kavouras is currently chair of the Department of Environmental, Occupational and Geospatial Health Sciences and interim chair of the Department of Epidemiology. He is also affiliated with the NYC Pandemic Response Institute.
He holds a PhD in chemistry from the University of Crete in Greece, postdoctoral training at Harvard School of Public Health, and held faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also the editor-in-chief of the journal Atmosphere. His research aims to understand the coupling between environmental quality and human health taking into the compounding and multifaceted roles of climate change and socioeconomic status. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and book chapters on atmospheric chemistry, exposure assessment, air quality and sampling, chemical analysis, and coupled geospatial models.
