The CUNY SPH Office of Career Services (OCS) was awarded first place in the 2023 CSAC Innovative CUNY Career Services Program Awards for their project, “What I Did with My Degree: Investing in Partnerships for Effective Recruitment, Student Success, and Alumni Engagement.”

In March, as part of an effort to strengthen career development and networking opportunities for students and alumni, the Office of Career Services hosted “What I Did with My Degree,” a two-day virtual panel event featuring CUNY SPH alumni from each of the degree programs offered at the school. The event promoted CUNY SPH’s degree programs and engaged students, alumni and others interested in pursuing public health careers. Registration was open to the public, including prospective CUNY SPH students. A panel of CUNY SPH alumni hosted the event.

Many of the participating alumni committed to ongoing involvement in career readiness programming for the CUNY SPH student community, including connecting with students for networking and informational interviews.

“Our office was intentional in creating these touchpoints between alumni and our students, and it has advanced our attainment of grant deliverables for the Career Skills Academy, a soft skill building program for which we are creating a database of partners to meet with students for networking purposes,” says OCS Director Hannah Stuart Lathan. “The event leveraged the collaborative efforts of Admissions, Office of Career Services and Alumni Relations, all while expanding our office’s partner database for subsequent outreach.”

In total, 173 people attended the panel events. Feedback from panelists, event staff, and attendees was extremely positive. In addition to a 98% satisfaction rating, participants described the event as well-run, informative, and insightful.

The OCS team will present on the project and participate in an awards ceremony at the annual Career Services Association of CUNY conference on Friday, May 19.
