Doctoral student Thinh Vu awarded CEESP fellowship for second consecutive year

CUNY SPH doctoral student Thinh Vu was awarded the Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations (CEESP) fellowship for the second consecutive year. Vu will receive $14,400 to conduct research on mental health symptomatology among cancer inpatients and their family caregivers at the largest oncological hospital in Vietnam.

In 2022, Vu’s summer research project entitled “The Exploratory Study of Factors Associated with the Process of Cancer Care and Quality of Services in Vietnam” was funded by CEESP and published in Psycho-Oncology. The study found that cancer inpatients experience high levels of symptoms related to depression and anxiety, as well as significant impairment in mobility and daily activities. Building on this research, Vu proposed another cross-sectional study entitled “Understanding Mental Health and Resilience Among Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients in Vietnam,” which was also funded by CEESP, making Vu the first fellow to receive this fellowship for two years in a row.

This groundbreaking research is the first of its kind to evaluate caregivers’ depression, anxiety, resilience and factors associated with resilience, as well as to identify preparation, burden and readiness for caregiving among caregivers of cancer inpatients at a national hospital.
