POSITION: Policy Intern
ORGANIZATION: NYC Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU)
About PEU: The City of New York’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU) was created in 2015 to serve New Yorkers in historically underserved neighborhoods and connect them to key City services, using innovative methods of proactive outreach. PEU’s model has proven particularly critical amid the global pandemic, a severe economic crisis, and now a challenging recovery. By combining proactive outreach, long term case management, and an interagency approach, PEU breaks down bureaucratic barriers to better serve those who are struggling with a range of hardships – from landlord harassment, homelessness, housing insecurity and eviction, to lack of health insurance, food insecurity, and much more. In addition to helping New Yorkers every day through core programs, PEU has been front and center of vital COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida recovery and relief efforts.
PEU’s programs are delivered by four outreach teams:
- DemocracyNYC: Helps increase participation in elections and strengthen ties to government.
- GetCoveredNYC: Helps enroll New Yorkers in health insurance, including low- and no-cost coverage.
- Home Support Unit: Helps New Yorkers in homeless shelters find and move into permanent, stable housing.
- Tenant Support Unit: Helps keep tenants secure in their homes by connecting them to rent freeze and homeowner tax exemption programs, anti-eviction and repair resources, and access to NYC’s Right to Counsel program.
Job Description: PEU policy interns will work 25 hours per week and receive ongoing training to assist PEU’s Policy Director and PEU’s outreach teams, while building professional skills.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Scanning and compiling daily media reports for stories relevant to PEU’s core work
- Researching and tracking relevant pending legislation
- Compiling lists of resources for clients
- Entering, tracking and analyzing data
- Joining team meetings and program planning sessions
- Supporting outreach efforts to New Yorkers through remote outreach tactics, including peer-to-peer texting, phone-banking and relational organizing
- Assisting staff with special projects Qualifications

- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment

POSITION: Assistant Trainers (part-time)
ORGANIZATION: Weill Cornell Medicine, Center for Cultural Humility (CHUM)
The Center for Cultural Humility (CHUM) at Weill Cornell Medicine is seeking new trainers to help lead trainings on cultural responsiveness and community engagement. CHUM is a new outreach and cultural exchange center focused on helping professionals such as researchers, clinicians, and educators build better relationships with diverse communities.
This is a part-time, non-benefits eligible position that requires roughly 10 hours of commitment a week, with flexible hours. Trainers will engage a diverse population of trainees across the world in reflections and exercises aimed at understanding and addressing patterns of bias in the realms of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation. Ideal candidates will have experience conducting trainings or working directly in diverse communities.

POSITION: CDC Survey Development, Implementation, and Evaluation Fellowship
ORGANIZATION: ORISE / CDC – Division of HIV Prevention
Two fellowship opportunities available at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Division of HIV Prevention (DHP), Behavioral and Clinical Surveillance Branch, located in Atlanta, Georgia. The appointment is full-time, will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Qualifications: The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master’s degree in a relevant field. Most recent degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Research Project: Fellows will join a high-priority, high-impact project focusing on HIV in the United States. With 23 participating health department jurisdictions throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) provides crucial data on clinical and behavioral characteristics from the only nationally representative sample of persons with HIV. MMP data are used to monitor issues affecting people with HIV, which range from describing racial disparities in viral load suppression to exploring the prevalence of depression and its effect on antiretroviral adherence. MMP collects data through personal interview and matched medical record abstraction. This fellowship will provide support for the MMP interview to design and evaluate survey methods and to implement interview activities for MMP.

POSITION: Research Fellow, Health Communication and Equity Lab (HCEL)
ORGANIZATION: U Penn – Annenberg School for Communication
The Health Communication and Equity Lab (HCEL), based in the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, examines inequalities in marketing, media, and message effects across diverse populations. Our research informs the design of culturally responsive communication interventions to advance the health and well-being of health disparity populations. HCEL is accepting applications for a post-doctoral fellowship to begin in summer 2023. The focus of this fellowship is on health communication strategies to address tobacco-related health disparities. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility for renewal for a second year.
The research fellow will gain skills and expertise to be successful as an independent investigator. The research fellow will work closely with Dr. Andy Tan on NIH-funded research projects focused on culturally-tailored anti-smoking health messaging for young adult sexual minority women and anti-vaping health messaging for LGBTQ+ youth. The fellow will receive training and mentoring on utilizing mixed methods research, community engagement, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation, and development of a competitive grant application. The fellowship will include relevant short courses or workshops, invited speaker series, opportunities for presenting research at scientific meetings and seminars, networking with experts, and collaborations on interdisciplinary research at Penn. Collaborators of the HCEL include faculty from the Annenberg School, UPenn-Rutgers University Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science, Penn Medicine, Penn Nursing, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Qualifications include a doctoral degree (or earning the degree by the start date) in health communication, social and behavioral science, community health, or related fields. Candidates with a track record in conducting health campaign design, formative and evaluative research using mixed methods, participatory and community-engaged approaches, health equity research, and substantive experience in sexual and gender minority health research are preferred. Strong written and presentation skills, and ability to work collaborative within a team environment are highly desired. Candidates from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that are underrepresented in health-related research, are strongly encouraged to apply.
