POSITION: Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellowship – 2023

ORGANIZATION: Henry Luce Foundation

Fellowship Overview

First Nations will award 10 fellowships of $75,000 each to 10 outstanding Native knowledge holders and knowledge makers engaged in meaningful work that benefits Indigenous people and communities in either reservation and/or urban settings. These fellowships support the work of Native knowledge holders and knowledge makers as they significantly advance their work and spark transformative change in their communities. In this sense, community is broadly defined and can include your Native community, knowledge community, etc.

The fellowship is a two-year, self-directed enrichment program designed to support the process of growth, development, knowledge and networks of Native leaders and thinkers. This unique and exciting new fellowship will seek to support individuals from diverse fields and engaged in different modes of expression. The fellowship is open to both emerging and experienced leaders and thinkers from a wide variety of fields, including but not limited to agriculture, food systems, youth leadership development, natural resource management, climate change, economic development, journalism, language and cultural revitalization, traditional and contemporary arts and more.

During the fellowship period, fellows will gather together three times during the initial fellowship period to pool their collective knowledge, and create a community of practice that crosses fields, geographies and tribal cultures. These three required convenings will give fellows the opportunity to engage in rich conversations intended to strengthen their leadership skills, reflect on their impact, share their learning and experiences and promote enduring professional relationships. These cohorts will empower fellows to overcome any geographic and cultural isolation they may experience by being a Native knowledge holder or knowledge maker, possibly as the only one in their field.

The fellowship is open to emerging and experienced Native knowledge holders and knowledge makers actively engaged in meaningful, positive work that benefits Indigenous people and communities in either reservation and/or urban settings.

To be eligible for the Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellowship:

  • Applicants must be tribally-affiliated with a Native American, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian community.
  • Applicants must be engaged in the creation, dissemination and/or perpetuation of knowledge in their field.
  • Applicants should have experience or expertise within the knowledge field/area they are pursuing.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Applicants must be able to clearly demonstrate how their work can impact and benefit an Indigenous community or communities in the U.S. and U.S. Territories.
  • Individuals may apply directly for this fellowship OR individuals may nominate Native knowledge holders and knowledge makers for this fellowship.

First Nations and Luce launched this fellowship to recognize and reward outstanding Native knowledge holders and knowledge makers for their important community contributions, and commitment to creating, disseminating and perpetuating Indigenous knowledge systems. However, we understand that some Indigenous people might be hesitant to identify themselves as knowledge holders, knowledge makers, culture producers, etc.  For many, this kind of terminology may seem contrary to community beliefs on ownership of knowledge and recognizing thought leaders.

Thus, individuals can nominate their family, friends, neighbors or colleagues for this fellowship opportunity. To do this, a nominator must work collaboratively with the knowledge holder or knowledge maker they wish to nominate to complete all application materials.  Before applying on behalf of another individual, you must contact the nominee in advance to fully discuss the parameters and guidelines of the fellowship.

Fellowship Period

First Nations provides a $75,000 award that may be used flexibly over two years. The start date of the fellowship is January 1, 2023, and the end date is December 31, 2024.

During the first year, fellows will receive $50,000 to support their work and efforts, be required to attend three fellow convenings and receive up to $5,000 in additional support for capacity-building activities and materials. During the second year, fellows will receive $25,000 to extend and deepen their work.

Application Deadline is May 26, 2022.

We seek candidates with a track record of peer-reviewed publications, training in psychology, public health, communication, or other behavioral science, and strong work ethic and commitment to research.

Our team has expertise in applying psychosocial research to improve the well-being of cancer survivors and to enhance cancer preventive health behaviors among underserved populations. We are conducting several large NIH funded psychosocial interventions (HPV vaccination studies among multi-ethnic college students and expressive writing and social support interventions among Chinese Americans). The postdoctoral fellow will actively participate in these funded studies, and contribute to the scientific aspects (study design, data analysis, etc.) and implementation. The post-doctoral scholar will have opportunities to work on first authored manuscripts, to develop new studies and to learn about grant writing including career development grants. The post-doctoral scholar will primarily work with Dr. Qian Lu, who has a track record of successfully obtaining extramural funding as a PI and mentoring career development grant awardees. The scholar will have opportunities to learn about multiple exciting research areas and methods. These research areas include psychosocial and behavioral interventions (health communication, HPV vaccination uptake, social support, peer mentoring, emotion regulation, expressive writing, cultural adaptation of interventions), well-being among cancer survivors (quality of life, adjustment, meaning, posttraumatic growth), Asian American cultural research (emotion regulation, social support, discrimination, and stigma), and understudied (young adult cancer survivors) and underserved populations (ethnic minorities, low SES). The candidate will have opportunities to learn about randomized controlled trial, mixed quantitative and qualitative research methods, community based participatory research methods, and biopsychosocial framework (stress biomarkers).

Applicants should send a cover letter stating research interests and experience, curriculum vitae, a list of two references, and up to two first-author reprint/writing sample(s) to Qian Lu, Ph.D., M.D. at (qlu at mdanderson.org) with the subject line “Postdoctoral Scholar Application”. The postdoctoral fellow position is a 1-2 year position, renewable upon mutual consent. The position opens immediately and we accept and review applications – and make hiring decisions – on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as possible. Starting date is negotiable. Inquiries about the position should be addressed to Qian Lu at (qlu@mdanderson.org).

This position comes with competitive salary (a minimum of $53,760/year) and generous health and other employment benefits. Travel support for attending conferences is also available. MDACC has extensive resources for post-doctoral scholars, such as weekly grand rounds, training workshops, grant writing workshops, writing assistance, library support, and statistical support. The cancer center ranks first in the number of National Cancer Institute grants in the nation and invested more than $902 million in research in Fiscal Year 2019. In 2021 MDACC was ranked the #1 Cancer Hospital by the U.S. News and World Report.

POSITION: Postdoctoral Research Associate

ORGANIZATION: Boston University School of Public Health

We are seeking a promising and motivated individual to be a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) under the mentorship Drs. Eric Rubenstein and Marcia Pescador Jimenez. The research focuses on metrics of geographic contextual factors and healthcare access for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD), Down syndrome, and their co-occurrence. Compensation will be between $72,000-$77,000 depending on qualifications. Members of underrepresented racial or ethnic groups are highly encouraged to apply.

The position is funded through two NIH-grants. Down Syndrome Towards Health Equity using Medicaid Analytic eXtract is a 9-year retrospective cohort of >50,000 adults with and >4,000,000 adults without Down syndrome enrolled in Medicaid. The fellow will examine the impact of distance to care, neighborhood characteristics, and other geographic contextual factors of obstructive sleep apnea, dementia, and mortality in Down syndrome. The second study tests the hypothesis that geographic contextual factors, in particular green space, will have a protective association with ADRD risk factors using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a 10-year longitudinal study of 6,814 men and women without clinical cardiovascular disease. This project uses Deep Learning Algorithms to analyze Google Street Views (GSV) imaging to capture unique geographic contextual measures, and fill important gaps in the literature on the association between green space and the urban exposome, and incidence of ADRD and cognitive decline.

The position involves working with investigators and trainees with a wide range of expertise in areas such as epidemiology, environmental health, biostatistics etc. The postdoctoral fellow will manage and transform data, conduct analyses in R, prepare tables/figures for manuscripts, present at scientific meetings, and lead manuscript and grant writing. BUSPH is committed to building and nurturing an inclusive professional community in which diversity is valued and every person feels they have a rightful place, are welcome and respected, and are supported in their endeavors. The Department of Epidemiology at BUSPH provides a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment with a wealth of resources to build a career. Fellows can take advantage of training, education, and mentorship opportunities at BUSPH.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research on specific areas of study as assigned.
  • Performing statistical analysis in support of research projects and preparing research reports and technical papers for publishing.
  • Investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories and contributing to statistical analysis plan design and development
  • Maintaining substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and preparing study results for presentation and manuscript development.
