*NEW POSITION: Healthy CUNY Advocates and Team Leaders
ORGANIZATION: Healthy CUNY

Healthy CUNY is a CUNY-wide initiative sponsored by the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy that promotes the health of CUNY’s 270,000 degree and 230,000 non-degree students in order to support their academic and life success.

Healthy CUNY is currently hiring pandemic displaced workers who are CUNY students to conduct educational, outreach, and benefit enrollment activities on CUNY campuses and to CUNY students living in neighborhoods most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. These Healthy CUNY Advocates, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the NYC Department of Small Business Services, will create multimedia campaigns that encourage eligible CUNY students to enroll in SNAP and connect to other emergency food programs in order to provide more consistent access to healthy, affordable food. In addition, CUNY Health advocates will promote and connect CUNY students to NYC Care, a low-cost

healthcare program provided by NYC Health + Hospitals for New Yorkers who cannot afford, or are not eligible for health insurance. The Advocates will also connect CUNY students with existing health and social programs on their campuses and in the community, again using multi-media campaigns to facilitate enrollment.

The result of these efforts will be to increase the number of CUNY students who are food secure and have access to healthcare, thus supporting college persistence and graduation. Spring semester activities may expand to include outreach for other student essential needs such as mental health services. Advocates will be based on high-need CUNY campuses where previous Healthy CUNY studies show high numbers of students are experiencing food and other essential needs insecurities.

Paid advocacy opportunities are now available to CUNY undergraduate and graduate students, with a special recruitment focus on the Bronx CUNY Campuses. These new Healthy CUNY Advocates will engage in outreach and education activities to connect their peers to public benefits and other resources that help students meet their essential needs (such as food security and healthcare). Specific eligibility criteria are outlined in the attached job description, along with details on the role, commitment and payment for these positions.

New Advocates will be accepted on a rolling basis through the Spring semester, and continuing through the Summer and Fall.

New York City Teens Connection

Improving Teen Sexual and Reproductive Health

Research and Evaluation Assistant

The NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene is committed to helping create a world where all New Yorkers can safely express their sexuality and gender identity with dignity, possessing the knowledge, skills and resources to support healthy and fulfilling lives.

New York City Teens Connection (NYCTC) is an adolescent sexual health program of the Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health (BMIRH) in the Division of Family and Child Health within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). NYCTC is an expansion of Bronx Teens Connection, scaling up this successful community- based model to reach more youth throughout NYC. By engaging youth, parents, community-based organizations, schools, clinics, and citywide agencies in a comprehensive effort to improve adolescent sexual health, NYCTC helps youth in NYC learn about their sexual and reproductive health, access the information and resources they need to make healthy decisions, and feel empowered to act on these decisions.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Poor health outcomes rarely occur in isolation, and certain communities tend to face multiple health inequities. These unfair, unnecessary and avoidable disparities are rooted in historical and contemporary injustices and discrimination – including racism – and require the investment of attention, resources, and deliberate corrective efforts to repair. As part of BMIRH, NYCTC strives to apply a sexual and reproductive justice and racial justice framework that prioritizes individual choice and bodily autonomy within the contexts of historical events, lived experiences, sexualities, and social conditions, and ensuring we fully engage community partners to move this work forward. NYCTC is also part of a larger health department effort to advance just and fair outcomes for all New Yorkers, particularly those most marginalized, and prioritizes neighborhoods with histories of social disinvestment and persistently poor health outcomes.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position offers an exciting, unique opportunity for a public health graduate student to work on an adolescent sexual and reproductive health research project. In 2020, NYCTC began implementing an evidence-based sex education curriculum in District 75 schools. District 75 schools provide specialized support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and/or multiple disabilities (District 75 (nyc.gov). As NYCTC expands our work in District 75 schools, we remain dedicated to ensuring that the most up-to- date evidence drives programmatic decisions. To this end, the Research and Evaluation Assistant will assist NYCTC staff in conducting a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature on school-based sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents with disabilities. This review will aim to identify best practices for the implementation of school-based sexual health education for adolescents with disabilities. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as a strong commitment to health equity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Research and Evaluation Assistant will:

  • Collaborate with NYCTC staff to define research questions, refine search criteria, and determine which articles
will be included in the review

  • Conduct searches in PubMed and other databases as needed to identify relevant literature

  • Review abstracts and full-text articles of peer-reviewed publications for content and quality

  • Track key characteristics of studies (e.g., study design, findings) in an Excel database

  • Identify limitations and potential for bias of studies included in the review

  • Create tables and figures summarizing research methods and key findings

  • Draft Method and Results sections for manuscript with the support of NYCTC staff

  • Edit and proofread additional sections of manuscript as needed

  • Complete required DOHMH-required trainings and CITI research training
Brooklyn Bronx (Main Office) Staten Island

  • Attend (virtual) weekly meetings with supervisor, weekly NYCTC Evaluation Component meetings, and monthly Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit meetings

KEY DELIVERABLES

  1. Excel database summarizing key information and common themes for all articles included in the final review

  2. Drafts of the Methods and Results sections for manuscript

  3. QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  4. Currently enrolled in a Master of Public Health program

  5. A demonstrated interest in sexual and reproductive health, health education, and/or health equity

  6. A background in public health or social sciences research, especially the ability to critically evaluate the quality
of peer-reviewed literature

  7. Strong scientific writing skills, previous experience writing scientific manuscripts a plus

  8. A demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team

  9. Strong organizational skills with good follow-through to complete assignments within specified timeframe

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel required, familiarity with citation management software (Zotero,
EndNote) a plus

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is an unpaid opportunity. The position is expected to last approximately twelve weeks, with an ideal start date of May 23rd. The Research and Evaluation Assistant will be expected to work an average of 10-20 hours per week. All work will be conducted remotely, although there may be opportunities to attend in-person staff meetings. Candidates must have access to a computer and internet connection, as NYCTC will not be able to provide these resources. This position will report to the NYCTC Evaluation Coordinator.

Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program

Our nation’s current and future challenges—from health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, continued economic inequality, and the ongoing need to build a more equitable and just society—make it imperative that government identify, recruit and retain the next generation of public servants.

With just under 7% of the full-time federal workforce under the age of 30, executive branch agencies are working to meet this need, prioritizing the design and implementation of paid internship programs that provide students with valuable work experience, an expanded professional network, and a better understanding of both the importance and impact of public service. These programs help college and graduate students—often facing an uncertain job market—apply their educational training to both short- and long-term federal opportunities and make a difference in society.

Operated by the Partnership for Public Service, the Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program is recruiting young talent to join the federal workforce in support of the Department of Transportation and the Department of Commerce. The program places students with critically needed skills into paid internships and aims to develop a diverse pool of young  talent for these agencies.

POSITION: Multiple Positions
ORGANIZATION: Multiple Organizations through the LifeSci NYC Internship Program

LifeSci NYC Internship Program has launched its 2021-22 online application. We have a number of fall internship opportunities, as well as full- and part-time jobs that are accepting applicants now. You may view them HERE.

Over the past four years, LifeSci NYC has placed over 425 students into paid internships (as well as entry level roles) at over 120 companies in NYC’s life sciences industry — from lab research roles to business development, software engineering, data science, and so much more.

Summer positions are just beginning to be posted, and we anticipate having more and more of those in the coming months. While specific summer internship listings will be shared only with those who complete our full summer application, I do want to call your attention to one time-sensitive opportunity to which students may apply now:

Deerfield is accepting applications for Summer Fellows. This program, designed to attract students from underrepresented populations with interest in pursuing healthcare or finance fields, trains students to serve as Healthcare Finance Analysts. No prior experience is required. It is open to students attending school in NYC with a projected graduation date by Spring or Summer 2023. This is a highly paid internship, with potential for continued employment through the following school year, and on a permanent basis thereafter. Interested students must apply by October 31, and should begin by completing our summer application.

For students who wish to more quickly apply for fall and other more immediate opportunities, our platform offers the option of completing an abbreviated application that requires only academic information and a resume upload. In addition to current undergraduate and graduate students, our application is also open to those who graduated in spring 2020 or later. This option may particularly appeal to this population.

POSITION: Program Internships (rolling recruitment)
ORGANIZATION: National Advocates for Pregnant Women

About the Organization:

National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW) seeks to protect the rights and human dignity of all women, particularly pregnant and parenting women and those who are most vulnerable, including low income women, women of color, and drug-using women. NAPW works to ensure that: women do not lose their constitutional and human rights as a result of pregnancy; that addiction and other health and welfare problems they face during pregnancy are addressed as health issues, not as crimes; that families are not needlessly separated based on medical misinformation; and that pregnant and parenting women have access to a full range of reproductive health services, as well as non-punitive drug treatment services. NAPW uses the lessons learned from the experiences of these women to find more effective ways of advancing reproductive and human rights for all women and families.

Our work encompasses litigation, litigation support, and legal advocacy; local and national organizing; and public policy development, public education, and outreach. Two principles guide all NAPW activities: (1) to build bridges and align agendas across diverse public health and social justice movements, and (2) to leverage and connect local organizing and activism with national advocacy and policy work.

To that end, NAPW is actively involved in ongoing court challenges to punitive reproductive health and drug policies and provides litigation support in cases across the country. NAPW engages in local and national organizing and public education efforts among the diverse communities that are stakeholders in these issues, including the women and families directly affected by punitive policies, as well as public health and policy leaders.

About Intern Positions

NAPW seeks talented and highly motivated interns to assist in NAPW’s substantive and administrative work. Program internships are positions for individuals who are not in law school and are suitable for undergraduate or graduate students. NAPW is committed to ensuring that interns have a significant and valuable learning experience, including participation in staff meetings and organizational events to the fullest extent possible.

Interns bring a wide variety of skills and interests. NAPW works to match specific projects and work activities to interns’ areas of expertise and interest. Interns may conduct research for ongoing litigation, monitor cases and new laws across the country, or assist with such tasks as following up with counsel and activists on particular cases. Interns may help with a wide variety of organizing activities including identifying individual experts and organizations that may want to participate as amici curiae in cases, coordinating public education or action events, or attending such events on behalf of NAPW. Interns may also work on public education projects including updating Facebook and other social media outlets, helping clients and activists tell their own stories, drafting commentaries, designing PowerPoint or YouTube presentations, or helping to document human rights violations around the country. Interns with particular interest in non-profit administration and fundraising will have opportunities to work on projects in these areas as well.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in women’s civil and human rights, reproductive justice, and drug policy and criminal justice reform;
  • Commitment to collaborative, cross-cultural work and the ability to work well with people in diverse settings; and
  • Strong writing, communication, and computer skills are a plus

Internships are generally unpaid. NAPW encourages interns who are students to seek course credit for their work at NAPW. Internships at NAPW may also help students fulfill academic requirements. Note: Fall 2021 Program Intern applications have now closed, if you would like to apply for our Spring 2022 internship please apply below and notate this in your cover letter.

Accepting applications on a rolling basis, with preference to applications submitted before:

  • Fall semester – August 1

  • Summer term – March 1

A complete application packet (PDF or Word format) will include:
