POSITION: Graduate Student Intern
ORGANIZATION: Health Research Incorporated – New York State Department of Health, Office of the Commissioner
Health Research, Inc. (HRI) is seeking a currently enrolled graduate student to work in its Manhattan or Albany, NY locations as an hourly employee to the New York State Health Commissioner, Dr. Mary Bassett. This position will be located within the New York State Department of Health (DOH). In this position, the incumbent will work closely with Dr. Bassett and other senior DOH staff on new and ongoing projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled master’s-level student in public health or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Excellent writing and communication skills, background knowledge of a variety of areas of public health, and enthusiasm for improving the health of New Yorkers.
Highly motivated, well-organized, and capable of juggling multiple tasks and deadlines concurrently. Attention to detail is a necessary skill.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent will conduct background research on variety of health-related topics, synthesize published research, journal articles, data reports, and other publications to produce memos and other products to assist with new or ongoing Department of Health activities. The incumbent will also assist with planning and organization of the Commissioner’s Medical Grand Rounds program, as well as provide planning/operational support for other Office of the Commissioner special projects and DOH activities.
DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position will begin in summer 2022 and it is anticipated to last through May 2023. The incumbent must be available to work full-time over the summer (37.5 hours per week), and part-time (up to 20 hours/week) over two or more days per week during the academic year.
Applicants must be able to provide proof of enrollment each semester. The incumbent will be paid an hourly rate, commensurate with experience. At the discretion of the school, arrangements can be made to use portions of this internship to fulfill practicum or other educational requirements.

POSITION: The John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service
ORGANIZATION: New York City Emergency Management
How to Apply
The John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service provides an opportunity for 10 graduate students in the New York City area to complete a nine-month paid fellowship at a New York City government agency or nonprofit organization. Each fellow will receive a $5,000 stipend, will be placed within the emergency management unit at their assigned agency, and will participate in special programs with other fellows. (Fellows commit roughly 15 to 20 hours per week to their assigned agency/organization.)
Fellows will have the opportunity to work on projects that focus on emergency preparedness and resilience, and involve collaboration with New York City government agencies, community-based organizations, and other key partners. They will also be given access to, and encouraged to complete, the New York City Emergency Management certificate program. Through their work, fellows will gain invaluable, first-hand experience working with City agencies and nonprofit organizations in the critical and growing field of emergency management.
Eligibility
- A commitment to New York City and to public service.
- A strong interest in emergency management and community resiliency.
- Superior academic achievement and relevant prior work experience.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently, and in highly collaborative environments.
- A proactive, “can-do” attitude and strong desire to learn.
- Proficiency using major social media platforms, conducting internet research, and using Microsoft Office.
- First-hand knowledge of New York City’s neighborhoods and community-based organizations preferred, but not required.
Applicants must be in a graduate or PhD program from September to May during the application year (e.g., September 2022 to May 2023) to be eligible for the fellowship. Degree programs in public administration, public health, emergency management, public safety, and public policy are preferred, but all qualifying graduate students will be considered.
This is an in-person fellowship. While there are no residency requirements, applicants must be able to commute to New York City at least two to three days per week for the duration of the fellowship.

POSITION: Public Health Communications Intern
ORGANIZATION: The New York State Health Foundation
The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) seeks a graduate-level Public Health Communications Intern to handle website content development and maintenance and special communications projects.
Position Summary:
The Public Health Communications Intern will work closely with the Communications Department. S/he will take the lead on projects related to the Foundation’s website and other communication mediums; act as day-to-day liaison for management of the website; and help manage the Foundation’s archives.
The internship is a part-time position with flexible hours (12–18 hours per week), beginning in June 2022 and extending through the 2022–23 academic year. Compensation is $18 per hour. The position is based at the Foundation’s New York City office. Presently, all staff are working under a hybrid schedule of in-office and remote days, although this arrangement is subject to change. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required for employment.
Qualifications:
NYSHealth seeks a graduate-level student pursuing a degree in journalism, health policy, public
health, or a related field; undergraduate students need not apply. Potential candidate must have a strong commitment to NYSHealth’s mission and should possess excellent writing, analytical, research, and communication skills. In addition, the candidate must have the ability to multitask and to work both cooperatively and autonomously. Experience in public health, health policy, journalism, and/or website development is preferred.
Candidates with professional or academic editing experience are strongly preferred.
