Background:
In FY 2021, SPH created and implemented a new strategic framework. Members of the school worked together to create 6 overarching goals, including Goal 2: Research and Scholarship: Advance high-quality research and scholarship that improves health outcomes, informs public health policy and practice, and creates social value. Goal 2 has 5 outcomes, with a total of 25 strategies.
Responsibilities:
The Research Assistant will support faculty in identifying data sources for strategies within Goal 2: Research and Scholarship of the Strategic Plan. To the extent possible, help identify next steps to successfully achieve the goal. Correspondence with faculty members responsible for the strategy may be required. A list of strategies will be provided.
This position is temporary, remote and has flexible work hours. The will report to the Associate Dean for Research Michele Kiely and Associate Professor Pedro Mateu-Gelabert.

POSITION: NYSPHC Fellowship Program
ORGANIZATION: NYS Department of Health
The New York State Public Health Corps (NYSPHC) will build public health capacity to support COVID-19 vaccination operations and to increase preparedness for future public health emergencies. The NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) will work with community partners to identify and train up to 1,000 fellows to participate in the NYSPHC Fellowship Program.
The NYSPHC Fellowship Program will be mobilized across the State in response to both the current and future public health emergencies.
The NYSPHC Fellowship Program provides full-time, compensated positions with commitment to at least a one-year term. Full-time employment includes a minimum of 35 hours per week and will be determined by human resources of the location assignment. Fellows will be compensated approximately the following: Fellows – $41,000; Graduate Fellows – $54,000; and Senior Fellows: $64,000.
Candidates for the full-time, paid NYSPHC Fellowship Program include recent graduates and students advanced in their studies in public health programs, nursing schools and medical schools, retired medical professionals, and laypeople, each of whom will be concurrently enrolled in Cornell University’s Public Health Essentials Certificate Program. Individuals with training in public health, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacology/pharmacy, allied health, social services, communications and information technology, logistics planning, education, and emergency health programs are encouraged to apply.

POSITION: Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience Program
ORGANIZATION: Columbia University’s Center for Science and Society
The Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience (PSSN) program at Columbia University invites applications for interdisciplinary postdoctoral positions to begin on July 1, 2022. Selected applicants will join our existing Presidential Scholars and a large group of mentors and affiliated faculty from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
PSSN is an innovative program pioneering interdisciplinary research between neuroscience and the arts, social sciences, and humanities. Each Scholar in this highly selective program has proposed a novel cross-disciplinary research project at the intersection of neuroscience and at least one other field, which they will conduct over the course of the three-year fellowship. Presidential Scholars join a vibrant community of postdoctoral researchers and faculty mentors and affiliates from across Columbia University.
For this application season, PSSN recognizes that there is a growing need for Presidential Scholars who have experience examining questions about diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and decolonization broadly defined. The future of science depends on scholars who can foster new collaborations among neuroscientists and other discipline experts, practitioners, and policymakers around these compelling and urgent societal issues that connect to mind, brain, behavior, and mental health. Priority will be given to applications that align with the goal of supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program. This can be considered in three overarching ways:
- Applications include current research and/or research proposals that involve empirical research, the collection of data, or the study of history, evidence, or policy aimed to better understand or combat racism, bias, and inequality, or that are designed to benefit marginalized groups in the U.S. or abroad;
- Applicants may come from communities which are historically underrepresented or marginalized in neuroscience or in the field or discipline in which they specialize;
- Applicants have demonstrated commitment and contributions towards promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at their current institutions or within their community.
Candidates must hold a doctoral-level degree (PhD, EdD, JD, MD, etc.) in any field by July 1, 2022, and must have received this degree after July 1, 2017. POSITION: Health Policy Intern
ORGANIZATION: The Office of Child & Family Health (OCFH) / NYC ACS
The Office of Child & Family Health (OCFH) is charged with ensuring that all children in the care of the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) have access to physical and mental/behavioral health care that is comprehensive, appropriate and in line with current best practice standards. OCFH delivers direct medical services to children entering foster care, offers individual case consultations, technical assistance and training to ACS staff and foster care agencies on a variety of health-related topics, conducts research and performance assessments, and provides clinical expertise in developing health and mental health policies that support best case practice.
The Health Policy Intern will be a part of the OCFH team and engage in health policy work. She/he/they will work under the Director of Health Policy and Planning.
Responsibilities may include:
- Conducting and reporting findings from literature reviews for projects related to child and adolescent health;
- Updating health assessment tools and forms;
- Reviewing, and updating ACS medical and mental health policy and procedure manuals;
- Participating in agency-wide meetings, committees and workgroups to ensure that health care issues are incorporated into internal program design and policy development;
- Supporting health policy and program development initiatives;
- Performing other related duties, as appropriate.
Primary Location:

Candidate Requirements:
- Graduate student with interest in and knowledge of health policy, child health, Medicaid policy, and/or adolescent sexual and reproductive health;
- Strong analytical, writing and communication skills;
- Ability to multitask while maintaining strong attention to detail;
- Ability to take initiative and work independently;
- Experience using Microsoft Office software, including: Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint;
- Time limited with an average of 8-10 hours per week
This position is unpaid, school credit and flexible hours may be available. Internship may be used as a fieldwork placement and/or practicum.

The Center:
The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) seeks a graduate level Global Health Research Fellow. CGHD actively brokers and fosters partnerships across constituencies in order to advance critical global health issues. The Center’s work entails global health leadership in four critical areas:
- Brokering and facilitating partnerships between governments, multilateral institutions, philanthropic organizations and the private sector around a range of global health issues including innovative financing, communicable diseases and global health security;
- Utilizing the Center’s strategic policy capacity and thereby engaging in global health issues before these issues become a global priority.
- Advising governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and private sector organizations regarding major global initiatives; and,
- Dissemination of topical global public health information to Heads of Government, Public Health Ministers, Heads of Multi-lateral Agencies and leading experts in a variety of public health disciplines;
Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Graduate Research Fellow are as follows:
- Draft position papers, policy proposals, memoranda and other education materials on global health and development issues broadly;
- Conduct research and analyze data on topics related to global health issues and
- Interact with Center staff, and with external partners, on development and financing issues;
- Participate in strategy meetings with staff to develop new strategies consistent with the Center’s mission;
- Participate in meetings and conference calls with strategic partners to discuss issues and develop pathways forward on issues affecting global health;
- Assist and support in the development of presentation materials including PowerPoint presentations used at fora, both domestic and international.
Qualifications: The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in public health or international affairs or law degree;
- The ability to work in a fast paced environment;
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively changing, dynamic environment;
- An interest in the mission and principles of the Center;
- Strong communication abilities to interact both with Center staff and strategic partners;
- Excellent oral and written skills;
