POSITION TITLE: Center Manager

ORGANIZATION: Detroit Urban Research Center (URC)

Organization Description

Established in 1995, the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC) is a community-based participatory research (CBPR) partnership that fosters and supports equitable approaches to research and interventions aimed at reducing and ultimately eliminating health inequities in Detroit.

The Detroit URC and affiliated partnerships focus on enhancing understanding of the relationship between the social and physical environmental determinants of health, and translating that knowledge into public health interventions, programs, and policies that build upon community resources and strengths.

The partnership is a collaboration of representatives from multiple Detroit organizations and academic researchers from the University of Michigan who work together to foster health equity in the city. The Detroit URC Board, composed of representatives of each of the partner organizations, oversees all aspects of the Center in accordance with a set of CBPR principles adopted by the Board.

Detroit URC partner organizations include the University of Michigan Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Social Work, the Detroit Health Department, eight community-based organizations (Community Health and Social Services Center, Inc. (CHASS), Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, Eastside Community Network, Friends of Parkside, Institute for Population Health, Latino Family Services, and Neighborhood Service Organization), and Henry Ford Health System.

About the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education

Job Description

The Detroit Urban Research Center (Detroit URC) is currently recruiting a full-time Center Manager who will be responsible for operation of the Center. The position will be based within the University of Michigan, School of Public Health’s Department of Health Behavior and Health Education. This is a term-limited position – one year from hire date, with the potential for renewal.

Under the direction of the Detroit URC Director, the Center Manager will operate with considerable latitude in performing actions and will have decision-making authority related to managing and sustaining the Center. The Center Manager will act as a liaison with other University of Michigan units and departments, with organizations based in Detroit, and with funding agencies. They will work in close collaboration with Detroit URC academic and Detroit-based partners, Detroit URC affiliated partnerships, and staff to manage the activities of the Detroit URC Board and overall Center. The Center Manager will have oversight of dissemination through, for example, preparing reports, co-authoring publications and presenting results at community meetings and professional conferences. They will assist the Director in acquiring funding through, for example, writing grant proposals, and will be responsible for monitoring the Center’s budget and developing budgets for all new Center-wide projects and assisting with budgets for newly established Center-facilitated projects. They will manage all other daily operations of Center-wide projects, including supervision of exempt and non-exempt research personnel, coordination, communication, documentation, dissemination and follow-up support as needed with the Center Board, Center faculty and staff, and funders.

Research Project Management & Development: 

  • Work collaboratively with project leaders to manage several ongoing research projects and related activities, including: coordinate the planning, preparation, conduct, evaluation and follow-up for the NIH-funded national CBPR Partnership Academy program; and co-manage the planning, conduct, and evaluation of the statewide Steering Committee of two NIH-funded COVID-19 projects;
  • In partnership with HBHE Research Administrator, conduct pre-grant award tasks for Center-wide and Center-affiliated research projects, including: developing budgets and budget narratives; writing grant proposal sections; and serving as primary contact for all university and funder representatives and Center faculty, staff and Detroit-based partners involved with grant proposal preparation;
  • Conduct post-award tasks for Center-wide research projects, in partnership with HBHE Research Administrator, such as: monitoring budgets, including estimating encumbrances and managing Detroit URC staff efforts across all grants; manage grant closeout responsibilities in coordination and cooperation with departmental administration; prepare and oversee Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications; prepare and submit progress reports and other required deliverables; and serve as primary contact for all faculty, staff and Detroit-based partners involved with the Center’s projects;
  • Assist with fundraising and development activities to secure resources for the Detroit URC;

Center Activity Management: 

  • Maintain, sustain and evaluate the Detroit URC Community-Academic Research Network, including: conducting meetings with potential academic faculty and community-based organizations regarding membership in the Network; ensure timely and accurate member profiles are created and displayed; and coordinate and facilitate the annual Networking Social event of Network members;
  • Administer small planning grant programs through, for example, creating calls for proposals, organizing/managing the review process, coordinating grantees meetings, overseeing evaluation, and providing technical assistance to grantees; and
  • Provide support to all Center-wide CBPR training and capacity-building activities and mentoring for academic and community entities, including: 1) respond to requests to the Center for on- and off-site CBPR and policy advocacy trainings and consultations and determine desired content and anticipated audience; identify academic and community consultants/trainers and serve as primary contact person between Detroit URC trainers and clients; coordinate preparation of materials as needed; ensure that community trainers/consultants receive stipends; and 2) respond to requests from outside organizations and prospective/current UM students regarding information about the Detroit URC and CBPR;

Operations Management: 

  • Hire/train/supervise Center exempt and non-exempt staff and student research assistants; assist on all start-up activities for new Center-affiliated research projects;
  • Serve as primary contact with all Center Board members; review minutes, prepare agendas for and provide any follow-up as needed resulting from Board meetings; provide orientation to new members; ensure receipt of annual partner stipends; represent Detroit URC on committees and coalitions in Detroit and within UM School of Public Health;
  • Promote and foster a culture of respect and collaboration among all staff and students;

Dissemination & Communication: 

  • In collaboration with academic and Detroit-based partners and staff, provide oversight of literature reviews, data collection, analysis and interpretation of Center-wide projects, and dissemination, including, preparing reports, co-authoring publications and presenting results at community meetings and professional conferences; assist Detroit URC Director and team on all partnership evaluation and documentation-related activities (e.g., data collection, analysis, feedback and interpretation of Center-wide projects);
  • Provide oversight of the maintenance of the Detroit URC website and social media presence; lead the production of dissemination materials for multiple audiences;
  • Act as an ambassador with other departments and organizations, for example, academic institutions, community-based organizations, health systems and public health agencies, and funders;
  • Other intervention, dissemination, translational research, and general duties related to the Center as assigned.    

Skills & Qualifications

Skills

  • Master’s degree in public health or social sciences or a closely-related field
  • Five or more years of experience with at least five in the management of public health research and/or interventions or related programs
  • Familiarity with community-based participatory research
  • Considerable experience working with multi-cultural communities and with representatives from community-based organizations, practice and academic settings and funders, and the ability to act as a liaison between and among groups
  • Supervisory experience
  • Financial management experience (e.g., budget development and management, grant pre-and post-award functions)
  • Excellent written and public speaking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and analytic skills, with the ability to synthesize information and use data to complement various aspects of the program
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow-through on tasks
  • Ability to manage time and work efficiently and effectively

Desired Qualifications*

  • Project management experience with community-based participatory research projects

Position Summary

The Director serves as the department’s principal policy and program officer for equity and inclusion and workforce planning programs.  The position will lead DHS efforts in addressing issues related to health equity while building and supporting a workforce and organizational culture that is diverse, inclusive and values the various backgrounds, cultures and life experiences that are reflected in the communities DHS serves.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:

  • Experience developing and implementing policies related to social determinants of health, health equity or equity, diversity and inclusion. This includes but is not limited to community or policy work in housing, employment, education, healthcare and empowerment.
  • Work experience or lived experience with community engagement or outreach activities related to cultural humility, social determinants of health, health equity or equity, diversity and inclusion. Examples of activities may include facilitating meetings with community or workforce members or providing community or workforce education or consultation.
  • Experience implementing strategic planning initiatives, including tasks such as analysis of complex issues, change management, developing quality improvement strategies and ensuring alignment of work plan to work product.
  • Experience serving in a leadership role on a team or project, including tasks such as training, mentoring, assigning and reviewing work, etc.

Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:

  • Experience serving in a formal supervisory role, including tasks such as prioritizing and delegating work assignments, managing staff performance, creating a cohesive team, making hiring and termination decisions, etc.
  • Experience working in an organization or with programs that have a large scope, such as regional, statewide, or nationwide.

Salary Information

The starting salary is between $99,500-$109,512 per year, depending upon qualifications, plus excellent benefits. This position is classified as an Agency Equity and Inclusion Program and Policy Manager and the pay schedule and range is 81/01. A 24 month probationary period is required.

POSITION TITLE: Senior Policy and Research Associate

ORGANIZATION: NYS Health Foundation

Position Description

This position offers the opportunity to work on a broad array of health policy and public health issues requiring the analysis of multiple data sets (ranging from large structured databases requiring data use agreements to unstructured open data). The position is best for someone who combines quantitative research skills with a keen instinct for how the research can be used to affect policy and practice. The successful candidate will combine programming and statistical skills with a sense of how the work will have real-world application and impact. The Senior Associate will have experience displaying and communicating research to stakeholders and will be creative, highly motivated, and productive.

The Senior Associate will work collaboratively with the Policy and Research team and the Foundation’s program staff to identify promising areas for analysis that can inform both NYSHealth’s work and the fields in which we work. The Senior Associate will be a key contributor in the development of research methodologies for new projects, be the lead analyst on projects, and help craft the research into suitable presentations and reports for public release.

The person in this position will co-author issue briefs, data briefs, white papers, and other publications relevant to the Foundation’s priorities. Although many of the projects are likely to be responsive to time-sensitive, near-term needs, the Senior Associate will also work on larger- scale projects with longer durations.

POSITION TITLE: Research Technician  

ORGANIZATION: Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute

Job Description: 

Dr. Emily Allen Paine is looking to hire a research assistant ($24.69/hr) ASAP to help run a pilot study that will lay the groundwork for a future economic empowerment intervention study for TGNB people navigating HIV risk or living with HIV in NYC, Atlanta, and SF bay area. This is a part-time position, but there are opportunities for additional research assistant work within her organization, as well as access to mentorship and investment in your professional development. People with lived experience and deep familiarity with TGNB folks navigating economic disadvantage/marginalization and HIV highly encouraged to apply. NYC or the surrounding area residence is a must, but will be working from home for the foreseeable future. Can offer training for the right person. 

The project focuses on developing an economic empowerment intervention for transgender and nonbinary people who are navigating HIV risk or living with HIV in three cities: New York City, San Francisco, and Atlanta. Research Assistant duties include recruitment of participants, scheduling interviews with participants, screening and interviewing participants over the phone and ZoomPro, processing subject payments, sending data to transcriptionists, checking transcripts for accuracy, and data analyses. The Research Assistant will also assist in sharing study findings, including preparing presentations and drafting publications.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s training preferred.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have extensive experience and familiarity with economically disadvantaged transgender and nonbinary people who are living with HIV or navigating HIV risk. The ideal candidate will also possess excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Previous training and experience conducting socio-behavioral qualitative research and qualitative data analysis is preferred, but we will train the right candidate. Additional requirements include strong writing skills and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and ability to quickly learn new software programs.
