POSITION TITLE: Post Doc Research Associate

Position Description

Dr. Charles R. Rogers with the University of Utah Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is excited to announce the availability of a postdoctoral research associate position in cancer disparities with the Public Health Division.

This position is considered Category IIA: Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s response to COVID-19. An employee hired into this role will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID-19 Telecommuting Agreement.

Tentatively starting June 15, 2021 (pending University approval), there will be one remote opening for a 1-2 year postdoctoral research fellow position in the Men’s Health Inequities Research Lab (MHIRL). Candidates must possess a doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, or equivalent) in epidemiology, public health, or a related field. Strong quantitative analytical and writing skills are required. Research experience in social determinants of health, multilevel modeling, social and behavioral sciences, health policy, demography , and/or health disparities highly desirable. Experience in SAS, R, or Stata is required.

The fellow who fills this position in Dr. Rogers’ Men’s Lab is innovative in not only permitting the ability to establish research independently, but also in focusing on intervention development and implementation to reduce cancer disparities among underrepresented communities; in focusing on education and experience in community-based participatory research; and in providing purpose-driven mentoring. The fellow will report to Dr. Rogers. The fellow’s performance is evaluated and funding for the next year depends on the progress made.

Position Description

ELC provides students with hands-on experience in administrative agency practice, litigation, legislation, and policymaking on behalf of real-world clients, aiming to (1) make students creative and effective environmental lawyers; (2) address the environmental legal needs of underserved communities; (3) make an environmental difference. 

Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, a Supervising Attorney’s general responsibilities include generating legal matters; training and supervising students in client representation; managing one or more legal cases or projects independently (i.e., without a co-supervisor); mentoring Clinic Teaching Fellows (if applicable); co-teaching the ELC companion seminar; and performing varied administrative and other tasks to assist in ELC’s operation.

The law school provides support for Supervising Attorneys to attend conferences that advance their professional development goals and interests. ELC additionally supports other activities that individual staff identify as relevant to their professional satisfaction and growth.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, the Supervising Attorney will be responsible for:

Clinic Supervision and Advocacy (80%)

  • Training and supervising six to eight clinic students per semester
  • Developing and managing clinic cases and projects, and responding to case intake queries
  • Attending and assisting in the design and teaching of the weekly clinic seminar
  • Attend weekly ELC team meetings and monthly clinical program meetings
  • Recruiting clinic students and undergraduate mentees through events and other outreach
  • Developing and maintaining clinic relationships with clients, partners, co-counsel, and other stakeholders
  • Traveling to offsite meetings as needed to work on clinic matters (often with students)
  • Managing the clinic docket during summers

Administrative Duties (15%)

  • Assisting with clinic administrative functions, including maintaining a shared document management system and course web site, and interfacing with shared clinical program paralegal on document proofing/cite checking/production/filing
  • Organizing programmatic events, such as conferences, workshops, film, and speaker series
  • Promoting the clinic to students and other constituencies
  • Engaging in media relations and development activities 
  • Speaking at public events, and otherwise participating in professional networking, training, and development activities

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

Performing other duties as needed, including organization of off-site visits to Clinic project areas in California (typically once per semester).

Skills & Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Candidate must hold a J.D. degree, or equivalent international degree 
  • Admission to practice law in at least one state (California Bar not required but preferred) 

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • At least three (3) years of professional work experience

Preferred qualifications

  • Admission to practice law in California
  • At least two (2) years of experience in clinical teaching or other law student supervision
  • At least three (3) years of experience working in the field of environmental/social justice law
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and planning skills

The Fund for Public Health in New York City, (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers.  To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

Program Overview

The Healthy Eating Unit within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s (DOHMH) Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention is seeking 1-2 part-time, temporary, Nutrition Educators with a preference for at least one educator with oral and written Spanish fluency, to support and implement Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM), a program funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) via a contract with New York State Health Department. Programming will be conducted virtually. SFM provides virtual nutrition education and food workshops for New Yorkers with low-incomes. The goal of SFM is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by building on New Yorkers’ knowledge and skills about healthy eating.

This position will be housed within the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, which strives to reduce the burden of chronic disease, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes, among New Yorkers. The Bureau addresses poor nutrition, inadequate physical activity, and tobacco use, which are key risk factors that lead to chronic disease. The Bureau recognizes that a history of discrimination and social injustices have led to unfair and unjust barriers to health and, in turn, risk factors for chronic disease disproportionately and unfairly affect some New Yorkers more than others. The Bureau aims to work with partners in government and in the community to create new and change existing systems, policies, programs and environments to prevent chronic disease and promote health equity. The Bureau sits in the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness.

Position Description

The Nutrition Educators report to the Farmers Market Nutrition Education Program Manager and will join a team of up to five people and implement weekly virtual nutrition workshops, virtual workshops for community partners, as needed, and record nutrition videos. This paid position is temporary, part-time and seasonal to coincide with the regional growing season, 3-4 days per week, starting in mid-June through November.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekly virtual Facebook Live SFM workshops in English and/or Spanish.
  • Conduct virtual partner workshops in English and/or Spanish.
  • Record nutrition content for YouTube videos, and edit videos, as needed in English and/or Spanish.
  • Attend weekly Monday educator team meetings, held virtually.
  • Follow program protocols including purchasing and expense tracking and ensuring integrity of programming.
  • Assist with curriculum revisions and updates, as needed.
  • Work on special projects to support the program, as needed.

Skills & Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • A minimum of 15 college credit hours in nutrition.
  • Experience providing education in multi-cultural settings with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communications skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Commitment to a minimum of 3 days per week, Monday – Wednesday, with the possibility of an additional weekday, either Thursday or Friday, virtually working for home.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience conducting nutrition workshops.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • Basic culinary knowledge and skills.
  • Comfort communicating virtually using platforms like Zoom and recording video content for YouTube.
  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course.
  • Knowledgeable about farmers markets, regional food systems and food security issues and the underlying causes of health inequities in NYC communities.

Racial Stress and Trauma Research:
