POSITION: Statistician Intermediate 

ORGANIZATION: The Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities (SexLab) at the University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN) 

The Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities (SexLab) at the University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN) is seeking a Statistician Intermediate who will work with a faculty Principal Investigator (PI) from the Department of Systems, Populations and Leadership on their grant which focuses on a complex national randomized control trial of an online HIV testing and relationship skills building intervention for young male couples. The selected candidate will focus on data management, data cleaning and data analysis and also paper writing with the PIs, and as such should also have working knowledge of HIV and sexual health among LGBT populations. The selected candidate will work primarily on data cleaning and analysis, and therefore should have a strong command of data analysis software (i.e., STATA or SAS), data cleaning process, and analytical techniques. POSITION: Program Manager, Health Equity Fund

THE ORGANIZATION     

The Commonwealth Fund — among the first private foundations started by a woman philanthropist, Anna M. Harkness — was established in 1918 with the broad charge to enhance the common good. Today, the mission of The Commonwealth Fund is to promote a high-performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable, including low-income people, the uninsured, and people of color. The Fund carries out this mandate by supporting independent research on health care issues and making grants to improve health care practice and policy. An international program in health policy is designed to stimulate innovative policies and practices in the United States and other industrialized countries.

ADVANCING HEALTH EQUITY

The goal of the Advancing Health Equity program is to contribute to efforts to dismantle systemic racism in health care policy and practice and counter inequity in treatment, patient experience, and health outcomes for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color. The program was launched in January 2021 after the Commonwealth Fund Board of Directors approved the creation of a new Health Equity Fund in July of the previous year.

The Advancing Health Equity program will have three focus areas: 1) Dismantling racism in care delivery, 2) Changing culture, beliefs, and attitudes, and 3) Using public policy to achieve equitable access.

THE POSITION

The Program Manager will report to the Vice President of Health System Equity who leads the Advancing Health Equity Program and will support the VP in coordinating the overall work and efficiency of the team to ensure goals and priorities are met.  Overall scope of work includes oversight and management of the Advancing Health Equity program, including internal and external communications, calendaring, management of events, grants and project management, and coordination of the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard and the Pozen-Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Health Equity at Yale.

Administrative & Project Management:

  • Primary administrative responsibility for the program’s meetings, including the Yale and Harvard Fellowships.
  • Manages meetings and events including logistics and vendor agreements/contracts. 
  • Coordinates and manages travel and other arrangements.  
  • Responsible for budgeting and expense tracking for program related activities and departmental expenses.
  • Facilitates intra-department communication and flow of information, and coordination with other Fund staff and teams.  
  • Provides overall coordination for the Advancing Health Equity program, including overseeing its master calendar of events and deliverables. Tracks deadlines to ensure projects and priorities are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that all program activities have detailed and up-to-date project management plans. 
  • Coordinates regular staff meetings; manages communications between and among the Advancing Health Equity team and other Commonwealth Fund staff.
  • Ensures operational alignment with strategic goals and vision of the HEF; regularly prepares reports and updates on program performance. 

Grants Management

  • Manages all aspects of the grant process: preparation of summaries and materials to support Board-level Grants, Intermediate, and Small Grants, payment and reporting schedules, and letters of agreement; tracking of program and grantee products, including papers and conferences, and scheduling grant payments accordingly; helps plan meetings, forums or conferences related to grantee work, and helps to maintain overall Fund-grantee relationships. Responsible for streamlining grant tracking methods and communication between the program and grantees to ensure timeliness of reports and products.
  • Assists in the development of grant proposals and budgets and in the preparation of project summaries for board meetings which are held three times a year. This involves communicating with current and prospective grantees, consultants and other experts reviewing proposed projects; assembles and provides materials on the Fund’s health equity portfolio, projects, and other activities as requested by grantees and other individuals. Conducts background research and summaries on the proposed topics, compiles and distributes proposal review materials to the Fund’s executive management team and assists in internal reviews of proposals.

Fellowship & Event Coordination

  • Acts as the primary liaison between the program officer and fellowship host institution.
  •  Manages and coordinates all grants, events, and activities associated with the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard, the Pozen-Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Health Equity at Yale, and the Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowships. This includes working closely with fellowship host institutions to facilitate application review processes, arrange fellowship functions in New York and Washington DC, written and verbal correspondence with fellowship host institution office staff, and general project management

Communications:

  • Coordinates with Fund Communications staff, logistics for media activities related to Advancing Health Equity program’s events or publications.
  • Acts as a liaison with Communications to ensure the dissemination of grant products, including: coordinating the review of draft grantee publications by Fund staff and the promotion of grantee-published articles; drafting language for the Fund website that publicizes grantee work; developing web-based grant products for placement or promotion on the Fund website; reviewing and providing program updates to the Fund website as needed; coordinating with grantees and Communications staff to produce webinars, podcasts, and other multimedia to promote grantee work.
  • Prepares materials, slides, and charts for internal meetings, including project briefing meetings, proposal review meetings, and program updates.
  • Prepares materials, slides, and charts for external meetings and presentations on behalf of the VP. Prepares social media summaries for communication of work and key activities. This involves research and assembling material and detailed information about projects in the program areas.
  • Coordinates communications with internal and external stakeholders.

CORE COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum three-years prior experience in a role with similar responsibilities. Bachelor’s degree is required. Previous work experience in a Foundation and strong interest in health care policy is preferred. 

The candidate must have superior organizational and administrative skills as well as strong project management skills. The position requires strong computer skills including PowerPoint, Excel, and project management tools. 

Flexibility and skill in working as a team member are a must as the position requires working in a very detailed, highly demanding, multiple-task environment.  The ideal candidate must have the ability to work independently, ability to work exceptionally well  with team members and across the organization and have an overall positive and can-do attitude.  Because of the nature of the department and its activities, extended hours and weekend work at certain times of the year are a component of this position.

THE PROGRAM ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH POLICY AND PRACTICE INNOVATIONS

The Commonwealth Fund’s International Health Policy and Practice Innovations program seeks to improve people’s lives by being the trusted source for international insights that spur change to the U.S. health care system. We compel U.S. health care leaders to act by generating research and analysis on international policies and practices that address common health care problems and promote a high-performing healthcare system. The Harkness Fellowship helps to achieve this goal by cultivating a network of international leaders and experts to inform our work.  Key activities include:

  • Surveying the public, patients, and physicians in 11 countries to compare health system performance annually (International Health Policy Survey)
  • Benchmarking U.S. performance compared to 11 countries on indicators in five domains: Care Process, Access, Administrative Efficiency, Equity, and Health Care Outcomes (Mirror, Mirror)
  • Commissioning research on health care in other countries that can inform U.S. efforts to improve access, quality, and efficiency  
  • Identifying and disseminating information about health care delivery system innovations abroad that might also work in the U.S. and working with U.S. delivery systems to pilot the most promising models, such as universal coverage, mental health, and drug pricing
  • Sponsoring the Harkness Fellowships in Health Policy and Practice, which enable promising international health care leaders to spend 12 months in the U.S. conducting policy-oriented research

SUMMARY POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Researcher reports to the Vice President, International Health Policy and Practice Innovations.  He/she is the member of the International Team who will lead international comparative research projects to fulfill the International Program’s primary objective and research agenda – to understand and analyze international health policy and practice to glean insights for improving health care in the U.S. The primary responsibility of the Researcher is to lead research and analytics for the Commonwealth Fund’s annual International Health Policy Survey and recurring international benchmarking analysis.

With guidance from the Vice President, the Researcher is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the program’s survey and benchmarking initiatives including organizing and providing input on questionnaire development, ensuring data integrity, communicating with the survey research firms, using statistical software to analyze data, and displaying data in tables and charts. The Researcher will participate as part of Fund staff research teams in writing reports, issue briefs, blogs, and journal articles based on survey findings. In addition, responsibilities will include making presentations to the media and at public and professional meetings.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

International Program Research (60%)

  • Manages large, complex research projects and ensures the quality assurance across the Commonwealth Fund’s international health portfolio to guarantee technical excellence and relevance of findings. Two key activities include the International Health Policy Survey and the recurring Mirror, Mirror international benchmarking analysis
  • Manages and coordinate of input from multiple countries on research including survey (e.g., questionnaire development); collaboration with researchers/experts on methods (e.g. Mirror, Mirror)
  • Writes reports, issue briefs, journal articles, and blogs based on survey findings and outside publications, including in peer-reviewed journals
  • Create and maintains a robust international research agenda (intramural and extramural) and supports the generation of timely and relevant analysis that informs policy and practice
  • Tracks, maintains, and builds ongoing knowledgebase on the literature, policy environment, and industry trends related to international health policy that is relevant to the U.S.
  • Conducts background research on international health access and delivery issues, including literature reviews
  • Monitors journals, working papers, OECD, WHO and other international developments, survey reports, and other information related to the program area

Research Dissemination (20%)

  • Supports dissemination of International Program’s research and work through articles in peer-reviewed journals, gray literature publications, conference papers, blog posts, social media, and other dissemination channels
  • Participates in key conferences and other forums, as well as expert groups and advisory committees, engages with key players in the international health sector, keeps abreast of critical trends, and shares The Fund’s work where it is most useful
  • Represents the Commonwealth Fund in meetings with other organizations focused on international health research
  • Liaises with members of international research organizations like OECD, WHO and individual countries health ministries and researches institutes to understand and support research activities

International Program Activities (10%)

  • Assists in the development of policy relevant, and methodologically sound grant projects for the international program. Conducts background research and literature reviews to support grant review; reviews proposals for design and methodology, prepares summaries for review and approval by the Board of Directors
  • Contributes to the International Team in managing grants; maintains knowledge of work related to grants, including publications
  • Assures high quality, policy relevant Fund publications based on grantee and staff work. Critiques grantee and staff papers submitted for Fund publication; participates in the final review, prepares executive summaries, and issues briefs based on grantee work, if necessary
  • Supports the Vice President with additional responsibility for coordinating all activities within the program, including developing and maintaining the work plan, convening program team meetings and representing the program internally to the executive management team
  • Manage a Research Associate and mentor and develop junior staff and advises leadership on talent needs

Special Projects (10%)

  • Performs other duties as assigned

CORE COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in health economics, health services research, health policy or relevant discipline, and a minimum of 5 years professional experience. Applicants should demonstrate strong international health policy, economic and research analytical skills, including competence in the use of quantitative data. The position requires a strong background in statistical data analysis using STATA or other statistical software. They should also have an established research record (contributions to peer-reviewed journals and gray literature publications and presentations at conferences and other expert forums).

Applicants should demonstrate strong coordination and project management skills, must be well organized with a concern for details, accuracy and deadlines, can set priorities and work with a minimum of supervision. Stellar written and verbal communication skills will include the ability to (1) convey complex technical issues to non-expert audiences and (2) present and share data and research results in a way that resonates with media, practitioners, and policymakers.

Candidates must have a strong working knowledge of the survey design and methodology and international data sources, like the OECD Health data, and a background in international health systems, with a focus on health insurance coverage, insurance markets, care delivery approaches, and drug pricing policy. Understanding of the international health landscape and a track record of engaging and maintaining international contacts at bilateral and multilateral agencies, foundations, and other countries.

The applicant should have effective supervisory skills and the ability to manage, mentor, and lead staff. Experience directly managing full-time, professional staff is desired. They should also be able to work under pressure and with tight deadlines in a fast-paced, but flexible work environment. Candidate should display excellent interpersonal skills; capable of being a team member as well as a team leader and have the willingness to participate in general workflow of the office.

For more than 30 years, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has used science and medicine to document and call attention to mass atrocities and severe human rights violations. We investigate and document abuses, give voice to survivors and witnesses, and plant seeds of reconciliation by ensuring that perpetrators can be held accountable for their crimes. PHR uses our core disciplines – science, medicine, forensics, and public health – to inform our research and investigations and to strengthen the skills of frontline human rights defenders. We work closely with hundreds of partners around the world, using facts to wage effective advocacy and campaigning and providing critical scientific evidence so that survivors can seek justice.

PHR, which shared in the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for our work to end the scourge of landmines, is poised for even greater growth and impact. As part of that strategy, we are seeking committed activists with a passion for human rights.

Role Description

The director of research and investigations has internal- and external-facing responsibilities, primarily focused on the management and oversight of existing research and investigations program areas and new program development within the organization’s framework of investigating, documenting, and advocating to prevent human rights violations. This position works closely with the director of programs and other team members to chart PHR’s future growth and strategic vision.  This is a full-time position and will require frequent travel to conduct fact-finding investigations and advocacy, and the capacity to work flexible hours to respond to crises and urgent situations. 

Responsibilities

  • Direct PHR’s research and investigations unit, overseeing methodologically rigorous research projects that align with PHR’s vision and mission; developing new areas of work, including forensic documentation and rapid response investigations; recruiting and collaborating with medical and scientific experts and academic institutions; developing strategies to monitor and evaluate PHR research; and ensuring the integration of an impact-driven advocacy approach in all research projects.
  • Supervise research and investigations staff in all locations; implement security protocols to ensure the safety of everyone working on the team; maintain a work culture that empowers and mentors staff to deliver outstanding work;
  • Develop, defend, monitor and manage department and individual research project budgets;
  • Ensure that PHR’s research findings are communicated effectively and with the highest ethical and editorial standards, through well-substantiated and compelling original reports, as well as opinion pieces, peer-reviewed articles in medical and legal journals, social media posts, and via other communications channels;
  • Represent PHR in the media, and at external conferences, professional associations, academic institutions, government and policy-making organizations;
  • Serve on PHR’s leadership team, providing input on policy positions, advocacy and communication strategies, campaigns, and organizational management and administration;
  • Monitor global human rights issues and emerging conflicts; foster relationships with policy leaders, human rights organizations, academic institutions, donors, and others, in order to identify organizational opportunities;

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in international relations, public health, journalism, law, social sciences, or research-related field
  • At least 10-15 years progressive experience at nonprofit or international organizations, foundations, or government agencies, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior management position
  • Extensive research experience in international human rights, public health, and/or related work including investigations, reporting, and advocacy
  • Extensive knowledge of international and human rights law, global advocacy, and international justice mechanisms
  • Proficiency with a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research methods and human subjects research ethics
  • Superior writing and editing skills and demonstrated ability to defend and explain complex issues to broad audiences, including senior officials and intergovernmental bodies

ORGANIZATION: CUNY Institute for Implementation Science and Population Health, HIV Prevention study with Men who Have Sex with Men

Position Description: Seeking a full-time (35 hours per week) Study Coordinator with experience in data analysis and data management in public health.

The Study Coordinator will be working on data analysis, data management, and study operations across multiple NIH-funded projects on HIV prevention and sexual health of sexual and gender minorities. The Study Coordinator will be responsible for minor and moderately complex research and analytic tasks as part of a research team, as well as working individually, under various degrees of supervision. The capacity to conceive, conduct, and finalize data analyses and data management skills are prioritized, familiarity and comfort with sexual minority and HIV research and men who have sex with men is preferred.

Requirements:

  • MS/MPH in public health or MA/MS in social or behavioral sciences required
  • At least 2-3 years of research experience in applicable research
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in writing syntax in SPSS
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at a given time
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Friendly demeanor, and ability to communicate with research staff and research participants

Responsibilities:

Study Coordination:

  • Creating and maintaining study documentation including study protocols and recruitment materials
  • Keeping detailed and accurate documentation related to study
  • Communication with participants on sensitive subject matter (including HIV testing)
  • Maintain confidentiality as required by the project or as directed by supervisors

Data collection:

  • Assist in programming and testing surveys using Qualtrics software
  • Conduct interviews & assessments of research participants/subjects
  • Data entry

Data management:

  • Prepare datasets for analysis including recoding variables, merging datasets, computing scores, and performing quality control to assure dataset quality

Data analysis:

  • Assist in conducting quantitative descriptive analyses, calculate inferential statistics between groups, and regression modeling

Data dissemination:

  • Assist in literature reviews for papers or presentations
  • Assist in writing manuscripts for publication
  • Assist in developing presentations from study findings

Additional desired qualifications:

  • Background in HIV/AIDS research, LGBT Health, and alcohol/drug use issues
  • Ability to write syntax/code in R, SAS, or SQL
  • Familiarity with Qualtrics and Access Database management
  • Spanish language fluency

Salary: Commensurate with experience

POSITION: COVID-19 Community Testing & Tracing Canvassing: Full Time Community Canvassers (Brooklyn, NY)

Overview

AM TRACE has an immediate opening for Community Canvassers to support a community-based COVID-19 Community Canvassing and Education program in Brooklyn, NY. This is an in-person outreach position that requires door-to-door interactions with community members as well supporting in-person events to elevate community understanding of COVID-19 impacts. Candidates work at various locations within a commutable distance of Brooklyn, NY. This position will begin immediately.

Background: COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted neighborhoods in the greater New York City region. Those most negatively impacted continue to have high case rates and continue to need additional community support to improve health equity and health literacy. TRACE supports a community focused project aimed to engage with the community on an individual level through door to door and phone canvassing, public facing event interventions and disseminating information to the public. The Community Canvasser will be responsible for targeted community outreach to the residents of Brooklyn.

Responsibilities

  • Complete program training and provide accurate information to community members.
  • Conduct outreach into targeted communities.
  • Effectively engage residents and provide accurate information on COVID-19 including prevention and testing/vaccine access.
  • Direct members of targeted communities to testing and/or other services.
  • Protect and maintain privacy and confidentiality.
  • Collect appropriate information from community members and report on findings as appropriate. 
  • Educate others on the use of personal protective equipment, like face coverings, to prevent possible COVID-19 transmission.

Qualifications

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

General Requirements:

  • Experience conducting peer education and outreach.
  • Knowledge of Brooklyn communities preferred.
  • Experience working with staff in a nonprofit or community-based setting.

POSITION: Plentiful Field Staff, Pantry Adoption Specialist

Field staff will be primarily responsible for recruiting, training, and driving adoption of a client centered technology application designed to make emergency food service more accessible, dignified and efficient. Field staff will be responsible for guiding pantries to adoption through mix of virtual and onsite trainings and coaching sessions to increase registration and first service within two months of initial contact.  

Primary Purpose and Overall Objective of the Job: Field staff will be primarily responsible for establishing relationships with food pantry staff and volunteers and driving the adoption of an easy to use technology application designed to make emergency food service more efficient and dignified for people using food pantries. The technology will be deployed at additional food pantries across NYC during spring 2021.

Description of services to be provided: Field staff will be responsible for guiding pantries to adopting new technology through a mixture of virtual and onsite trainings and coaching sessions. Field staff will be the direct link from the office-based/remote staff to the pantries. Field staff will need to communicate on-the-ground perspectives and challenges to the office staff while communicating technical information and how-to strategies to staff and volunteers in the field. Field staff work will enable us to reach an additional 60+ pantries, disseminate best practices more quickly, and reach a critical mass of pantries that help will drive city-wide adoption of the technology. 

Field staff shall undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain a rollout work plan for their pantry cohort, updating pantry progress daily while in the field through the use of mobile technology
  • Report formally on a rolling basis to the Plentiful team about progress and any obstacles to successful implementation
  • Build capacity at pantries in their cohort to use the technology by:
    • Developing a deep understanding of the applications interface, newest features, and the benefits for the pantries who use the technology
    • Supporting pantries to register and create accounts on the platform
    • Working with pantry staff and volunteers to obtain Wi-Fi, hardware, and printed materials and other resources
    • Working with clients to register on the technology to accelerate check-in at their pantries of choice
    • Providing virtual and/or on-site capacity building and technical assistance during rollout
  • Monitor and communicate with cohort pantries to ensure their ongoing success

Essential Skills and Requirements

  • Understanding the socio-economic factors that contribute to hunger and the multi-cultural, multi-lingual environment at pantry distribution points is strongly desired.
  • Light technology skills (using apps in the field for reporting, training computer/smartphone novices to use smart phone/web apps) are required. Deep technology skills are not required, but a passion for innovative social technology is a must.
  • Knowledgeable about community-based organizations, community nutrition, food safety, food service, and hunger as they relate to New York City residents. Have professional or academic experience in any of the above topics.  
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to work a minimum of 22 hours per week from April 2021 to June 2021
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as assigned.
