POSITION: Research Assistant Intern

Internship Summary: The Population Council’s Girl Innovation, Research, & Learning Center (GIRL Center) is a global research and thought leadership hub that generates, synthesizes, and translates evidence on adolescent girls. The GIRL Center works to ensure that policies and programs that aim to improve the health and well-being of adolescent girls are based on rigorous research and high-quality evidence.

The Research Assistant Intern will be responsible for providing research and logistical support to the GIRL Center core team. Their work may be distributed across multiple projects that focus on a range of topics that affect adolescent health and development such as child, early, and forced marriage, HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and education.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide support on research projects, including conducting literature reviews, creating bibliographies, and formatting tables.
  2. Assist with data analysis or policy reviews for GIRL Center-powered websites that synthesize evidence on adolescent health and development to promote evidence-based decision-making.
  3. Draft sections of and copy-edit reports, briefs, presentations, and communications materials.
  4. Other duties to support the overall development and management of the GIRL Center, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Masters Degree Program with at least 2 years of relevant work experience (internships are considered relevant work experience).
  2. Excellent writing and communication skills, for both research and policy audiences.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote-work environment, manage time efficiently, prioritize, and multi-task.
  4. Ability to read and synthesize published articles and grey literature.
  5. Excellent organizational skills, with keen attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
  6. Excellent English language skills (oral and written).
  7. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is required

POSITION: Family Planning and Reproductive Health Strategic Communications and Outreach Intern (STAR Program)

ORGANIZATION: USAID

STAR Program Description:

Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Its purpose is twofold: (1) Through individual fellowships, STAR will help strengthen the capacity of diverse American and low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) health professionals at all levels to make innovative contributions to global health (GH); and (2) STAR will create groundbreaking opportunities for both US and LMIC GH academic institutions and other groups, including professional associations, to create systems for open-access knowledge sharing, resulting in effective partnerships. STAR’s individual and institutional participants are contributing to the development of self-sustaining systems and tools that will produce global citizens with the full spectrum of relevant health competencies. STAR is managed by the Public Health Institute and implemented in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH).

Internship Description:

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) advances and supports voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs in nearly 40 countries across the globe. As the world’s largest family planning bilateral donor, USAID is committed to helping countries meet the family planning and reproductive health needs of their people. USAID supports Family Planning 2020’s goal to reach 120 million more women and girls in the world’s poorest countries with access to voluntary family planning information, contraceptives and services by 2020. Introduction:

The Family Planning and Reproductive Health Strategic Communications Intern (Intern) will support the Bureau for Global Health’s (GH) Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH). They will have the opportunity to work alongside USAID’s leading technical experts as well as engage with external partners and stakeholders to promote the Agency’s family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) programming and partnerships. PRH communications is a fast-paced and dynamic environment with opportunities to engage with external partners and develop highly visible communication materials.

Reporting structure:

The Intern will work closely with Office of Population and Reproductive Health Communications Team and receive technical guidance from the Director of Office of Population and Reproductive Health, who will serve as his/her onsite manager.

Outcomes:

 By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:

  • Strategic communications and outreach in a U.S. Government setting.
  • Greater understanding of USAID’s communication strategy through social impact storytelling.
  • Greater understanding of the international development community and how USAID’s family planning and reproductive health programming helps build strong, resilient societies in host countries.
  • Strengthened skills in relationship-building and collaboration within a complex organizational and partnership structure.

Essential Duties:

  • Support with developing internal and external communications materials to bring awareness to PRH’s portfolio and partnerships.
  • Engage with partners to develop a series of human-interest stories and visual communications materials to illustrate complex health concepts for a lay audience.
  • Help monitor analytics to track impact in order to inform future communication and outreach efforts, including researching and applying new metrics and developing regular reports.
  • Draft Twitter, Facebook and Instagram content for USAID’s social media channels, including campaigns for relevant health awareness days.
  • Help with content management for the PRH webpage on usaid.gov.
  • Support with developing interactive and new visuals to better convey technical family planning and reproductive health content.
  • Help draft a wide variety of written communications materials, including but not limited to, memos, one-pagers, fact sheets, press releases, etc.
  • Support the development of a knowledge management system for PRH content

Anticipated learning outcomes:

All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*required 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
  • Gain exposure to Communications and Family Planning and Reproductive Health through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months;
  • Demonstrated interest in synthesizing technical health information and developing communications materials that effectively engage a variety of external audiences.
  • Strong writing skills and deep understanding of social media platforms and how to use them for engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience developing health-related strategic communications, using media analytics platforms to evaluate engagement.
  • This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.

Additional skills (preferred):

  • Some experience working with US Government partner organizations, such as academic institutions, research organizations or country governments.
  • Familiarity with USAID or another US Government agency involved in development work.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing communications materials.
  • Strong social media and web management skills.

POSITION: Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in “Behavioral Sciences Research in HIV Infection”

ORGANIZATION: HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, Division of Gender, Sexuality, and Health at the New York Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University

THREE OPENINGS PER JULY 2021

This postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides innovative training in sexuality, gender, and mental health research as applied to HIV prevention and treatment across populations in both national and global contexts. The program is open to persons with a doctoral degree in the behavioral, social or medical sciences. The long-term goal of the Program is to develop a diverse and highly skilled workforce of leaders in behavioral and social science research to meet the challenges posed by the evolving HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Our Program employs three complementary and mutually reinforcing learning strategies:

(1)   Involvement in research mentored by experienced senior investigators;

(2)   Education via multiple modalities in substantive issues, including the intersection of sexuality, gender, and mental health with fundamentals of medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, and health promotion related to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care; and

(3)   Training in critical academic and professional skills that will enable graduating Fellows to excel as competitive researchers with extramural grant support from NIH as well as other PHS and private funders.

This Fellowship offers extensive opportunities for networking with researchers, clinicians, and public health practitioners across disciplines and a range of academic and public health centers in the New York metropolitan area. Fellows have full access to resources of the HIV Center and the Columbia University Medical Center.

POSITION: Foodborne Disease Intern

ORGANIZATION: New York City DOHMH, Bureau of Communicable Disease and Office of Environmental Investigations

Description:

The Fund for Public Health in New York City, (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

Program Overview:

The foodborne disease group at the New York City DOHMH, Bureau of Communicable Disease and Office of Environmental Investigations are working on a project, “Improving Foodborne Disease Outbreak Detection by Incorporating Complaints Identified in Social Media Data”. The project is a collaboration with the Columbia University Department of Computer Science and uses data from Yelp and Twitter to identify complaints of foodborne illness. The program is located primarily at 125 Worth St, New York, NY 10013 and 42-09 28th St, Long Island City, NY 11101.

Position Overview:

The foodborne disease group has an opening for a new intern to assist foodborne disease environmental health specialists and epidemiologists with foodborne illness complaint detection and outbreak investigations. The candidate would start in October 2020, with the possibility of staying on for the entire 2020-2021 academic year. The candidate would work 20 hours/week during the school year, with daytime and evening hours from 9am-5pm.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow-up and investigate reported foodborne disease complaints identified via social media and reported to the citywide complaint system (311); conduct telephone interviews using a standardized questionnaire
  • Outbreak investigations
  • Data collection, data entry, data management, and data analysis
  • Other disease investigations within the Office of Environmental Investigations and Bureau of Communicable Disease where necessary
  • Miscellaneous projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology and environmental health

POSITION: Postdoctoral Fellow

ORGANIZATION: The Center for Health Behavior Research at the University of Pennsylvania

Description:

The Center for Health Behavior Research at the University of Pennsylvania (https://www.cceb.med.upenn.edu/chbr) is seeking a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the Center. The Center, directed by Dr. Karen Glanz, focuses on advancing the development, application, and testing of health behavior measurement and theories. We conduct and collaborate on innovative research on prevention, intervention, and program development for health behavior change.

Our research focuses mainly on chronic disease prevention, dissemination and implementation science, cancer prevention and control, and community-engaged research. The postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities to collaborate on interdisciplinary research, conduct secondary data analyses, and work on new studies.

The position is for one year with the possibility of support for two additional years through an NIH T32 training grant in cancer epidemiology (based on qualifications). Start date is negotiable.

Eligibility:

Eligible candidates must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have recently completed a research-oriented doctoral training program (PhD, DrPH, ScD, or equivalent) in behavioral, social, or public health sciences.
