Sara Flowers successfully defended her dissertation, “Perceptions of Fidelity and Adaptation in Evidence-Informed Interventions by Women of Color Sexuality Health Educators” on September 1, 2016.
After her successful defense, Dr. Flowers reflected on her experience as a CUNY doctoral student: “I highly valued the unique way that our program bridged research and practice. Further, I appreciated the opportunity to work with professors across CUNY whose research interests were both broad and intersectional. As a practitioner myself, learning from professors who understood the importance of practical application of public health research findings through a social justice lens was invaluable. With my doctorate in hand, I intend to continue my work in the field of sexuality education, prioritizing young people of color. I will strive to find innovative and effective ways to integrate practice-based evidence in sexuality education programs and policies.”
Sara is a CUNY adjunct professor for York College and the School of Public Health. At York College, Sara also serves as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow for The Collaborative Research Group on Health Policy and Promotion + the UrbanHealth Lab. Sara is an advocate for evidence-informed practice and emotional intelligence in sexuality health education. Her research interests focus on fidelity and adaptation of sexuality health education curricula, and other sexual health topics as they relate to disparities, youth of color, and abortion access. Sara holds a BA in Psychology and a Master of Public Health degree from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Since 2009, Sara has worked as Director of Youth Initiatives for Love Heals/ACRIA. In this role, Sara oversees the implementation of all aspects of HIV prevention and leadership development programs for young people, including Leadership Empowerment and Awareness Program (LEAP) for Girls, Sexual Health for Young Men, LEAP Alumnae Programs, and the Youth Advisory Council. These programs serve youth of color in East Harlem, Central Brooklyn and the Bronx. Sara’s responsibilities include overseeing curriculum development and revision, coordinating quantitative and qualitative program evaluation and reporting, cultivating and maintaining community partnerships, and hiring and managing the freelance health education team.
Previously, Sara was a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF), serving as manager of data and evaluation. When she isn’t teaching, volunteering, or working, you can find Sara enjoying life in Fort Greene, Brooklyn with her husband, George, and their daughter, Zora.
