As part of a partnership dedicated to advancing urban health research, the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy and NYC Department of Health have released new population health data from the 2013-2014 NYC Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NYC HANES).
The NYC HANES website now contains direct access to analytic datasets, codebooks, sample program codes and training slides. Along with survey data, bio-repositories of sera and urine are available from both the 2004 and 2013-2014 studies. Guided by a Data Oversight Committee, the two institutions have announced a call for proposals to use specimens from these repositories for public health-related research.
The NYC HANES initiative was led by co-principal investigators Dr. Lorna Thorpe from CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy and Ms. Sharon Perlman from the NYC Health Department, employing a household-based sampling design and home-based physical examination methodology. The project was primarily supported by the de Beaumont Foundation, with additional support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, New York State Health Foundation, Robin Hood Foundation, and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
NYC HANES is modeled after the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey – which has been conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics for more than 35 years.
More than 20 academic articles have been published using the 2004 NYC HANES dataset. Now CUNY SPH and the NYC Health Department invite researchers in public health, medicine, and other fields to download the most recent dataset or submit a proposal to receive specimens for their own research.
