Healthy aging is an increasingly urgent global challenge as life expectancies continue to rise and as the growth of older segments of the population outpaces younger segments in most regions. Recognizing there is great diversity in how people age and that inequities throughout the life course directly contribute to health, social, and economic disparities in older adults, innovative solutions are needed to address the range of health needs of this population and the societal and economic impact of this demographic transition. Healthy aging requires a paradigm shift towards a more holistic view of aging focused on functional ability and wellbeing.
Through A Dialogue on the Future of Healthy Aging, Firefly Innovations and the IE Center of Social Innovation are teaming up to lead a transdisciplinary effort to envision the future of aging. By delivering these sessions, we aim to:
- Establish the current evidence base of best practices in healthy aging across diverse sectors
- Develop a network of cross-sectoral stakeholders to accelerate a movement towards healthy aging
- Design a pipeline of activities aimed at fostering and scaling up innovations in healthy aging
Session 2: Healthy Aging Innovations in Senior Living
Westminster Canterbury Richmond is the 12th largest single-site life plan community in the United States, with around 800 residents and more than 600 staff on a 60-acre campus. Innovation in healthy aging is the way of the future for the sector of senior living, but it has not always been a focus in our past. In Session 2, guest speakers Anita Adkins and John Burns of Westminster Canterbury Richmond will share their experience in cultivating a culture of innovation through corporate values and charitable support, building an environment that promotes healthy aging and reduces ageism, and fostering new ideas even during the coronavirus pandemic.

Anita E. Adkins
Development Officer-Strategic Gifts and Special Projects
Anita joined Westminster Canterbury Richmond in 2010. In her role with Westminster Canterbury Foundation, she designs and executes strategy, programs and communications that encourage charitable support for innovation and leadership in senior services. Anita speaks on innovation and philanthropy and coached startups as a mentor to the Entrepreneurship World Cup in Saudi Arabia. Previously she was Arts Center Manager at Cabarrus Arts Council, creating new community-based visual and performing arts programming. She received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Gardner-Webb University, where she was a Presser Scholar. She has a Global MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain.
John D. Burns
President and Chief Executive Officer
John joined Westminster Canterbury Richmond in 2015. He has held executive-level senior living and health care leadership roles across the country, having served as Chief Operating Officer of Presbyterian Homes in Evanston, Illinois; Vice President and Executive Director of Westminster Place, a Presbyterian Homes community also in Evanston, Illinois; Chief Operating Officer at Columbia County Health System in Dayton, Washington; and various positions at Centura Health in Denver, Colorado.
John received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Colorado State University, and an MBA from the University of Colorado. Additionally, he earned an associate’s degree in Occupational Therapy. He is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives and a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator.
