The Advanced Certificate in Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology will provide students with the conceptual knowledge and the practical statistical skills to evaluate the role of chemical exposures in human health. Grounded in the research methods applied throughout public health in the private sector and by state and federal agencies, this program will enhance careers in public health, environmental health, regulatory sciences, and occupational settings including factories, housing, transportation, and medical organizations/agencies.

Most students should be able to complete the certificate program in one year.

Students who complete the advanced certificate program will have the opportunity to apply some or all earned credits to a master’s program at CUNY SPH, including the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and the Master of Science (MS) degree. The number of credits transferable to a program will depend on the specific MPH or MS concentration.

Is this certificate right for you?

This 12 credit program is for working professionals and students looking to build expertise in environmental and occupational epidemiology. The curriculum provides advanced training in research methods and quantitative analysis to evaluate the health effects of environmental exposures.Students will gain skills in epidemiologic study design and statistical analysis applicable across research, government, and industry settings.

What will you learn?

This certificate consists of two core courses in public health research methods and quantitative analysis, plus electives. Students will develop advanced data analysis skills to evaluate environmental and occupational health exposures, analyze population-level health impacts, and identify at-risk groups. Students will also learn to present, explain, and communicate complex data and concepts in the field.

Where to after completion?

This program prepares graduates for roles such as environmental epidemiologist, occupational health analyst, public health researcher, and environmental health specialist in government agencies, research institutions, and private sector organizations. Students may also use this certificate to gain entry into CUNY SPH’s MPH or MS programs through a streamlined application process.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (GPA of 3.0 preferred)
  • Please upload any official or unofficial copies of your transcripts directly to the SOPHAS express application
  • Resume or CV
  • Personal statement/statement of purpose (500 words maximum)
  • TOEFL scores are required if language of instruction for prior degrees was not English
  • Transcript evaluation from WES or ECE for international transcripts
