January marks Healthy CUNY’s month of Health Insurance Coverage, and for many people the deadline to sign up for coverage is January 31st.
To enroll in no-cost or low-cost health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s online Marketplace, you can go to www.nystateofhealth.ny.gov. To find free, in-person assistance to help with exploring your health insurance options and signing up you can call 311 or text CoveredNYC or SeguroNYC to 877877. There are also free in-person enrollment assistance on campus. Contact your campus Health and Wellness Center (you can find your Center at http://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/sa/services/counseling/campus-centers.html) for campus enrollment assistance or schedules and locations.
Health insurance provides coverage when you need medical care but it also gives you free preventive services like flu shots to keep you from getting sick as well as offering free contraception. Even if you feel healthy now, accidents or illness can happen, and high medical costs can cause bankruptcy. Those who opt not to enroll in any insurance plan will have to pay a fine.
Staying healthy keeps students and professors in school, allowing the CUNY community to stay on track towards academic and professional success.
