The CUNY SPH Foundation proudly announces that attorney and U.S. Army veteran Austin Cheng, CEO of Gramercy Surgery Center, has joined its Board of Directors. Cheng’s expertise in healthcare leadership, combined with his distinguished service to the nation and community, will strengthen the foundation’s mission to advance public health equity and innovation.
Born and raised in Queens and Nassau County, Cheng has long been dedicated to serving communities through collaboration and coalition-building. As CEO of Gramercy Surgery Center, he has prioritized expanding access to patient-centered, quality care. Cheng’s military service as a U.S. Army JAG Corps attorney and his continued role as a major in the Army Reserves reflect his steadfast commitment to service and leadership.
“Having Austin Cheng join our Board is an honor,” said Lyndon Haviland, Chair of the CUNY SPH Foundation. “His leadership in healthcare and his dedication to public service align perfectly with our efforts to tackle critical public health issues and improve health outcomes for underserved communities.”
Cheng’s involvement with CUNY SPH began with his volunteer contributions to the Career Skills Academy (CSA) as a founding co-chair of the CSA’s Advisory Council, where he mentored students and supported their professional growth. As a board member, Cheng will play a key role in advancing the foundation’s initiatives, including the CSA, the Health Equity and Literacy Program, scholarships, and fellowship opportunities.
“I am proud to join the CUNY SPH Foundation Board to help advance its mission of fostering healthier, more equitable communities,” said Cheng. “It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated team on initiatives that make a lasting impact.”
The CUNY SPH Foundation continues to build on its success by welcoming leaders like Cheng, whose experience and passion will enhance the Foundation’s efforts to support public health education and research in New York City and beyond.
“We are excited to welcome Austin to our Board,” said Adam Doyno, executive director of the CUNY SPH Foundation. “Like our students, he believes in the importance of a public school for public health serving New York. Austin has been leading the growth of our cornerstone student service program for years and his presence on the board will only bolster our overall success in service of the school and its students.”
