Sergio Costa, Assistant Dean of Digital Learning, Marketing, and Communications at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH), will be leaving the school next month to assume a new role at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island as Dean of the College of Distance Education and professor with tenure.
At the U.S. Naval War College, a senior service college for the United States Navy, Costa will direct the executive level non-resident programs that prepare commissioned officers for flag officer assignments up to the rank of admiral. He will oversee over 50 full-time faculty in Newport, Monterey CA, and Washington DC and over 150 adjunct professors in various military bases across the United States.
Costa is a political scientist by discipline, and an expert in online program development and multimodal learning and teaching. Since joining CUNY SPH in 2014, he facilitated the school’s integration of online learning long before the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated it, and as such was able to help the school transition seamlessly to fully remote learning during the pandemic, allowing students to continue their education with minimal disruptions.
Prior to joining CUNY SPH, Costa worked for Pearson Education, overseeing the operations of a nationwide tutoring service until 2009. He then served as the director of distance learning at the University of Nebraska Medical Center – College of Public Health in Omaha, Nebraska until 2014. He holds a PhD in political science from Boston University and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Nebraska.
“It’s been the privilege of a lifetime to have worked at CUNY for the past 10 years. The school is ascendant, in large part because we have talented staff who make that happen,” says Costa. “I want to thank my colleagues and especially the students and alumni who inspire me every day.”
“Over the last decade, Sergio’s dedication to our students and faculty has been invaluable and he has been crucial in helping establish CUNY SPH as a model for innovative learning and teaching,” says CUNY SPH Dean Ayman El-Mohandes. “We wish him all the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his career. We have no doubt that he will make as lasting a mark at the U.S. Naval War College as he has with us here at CUNY SPH.”
Costa will begin his new role at the U.S. Naval War College on June 17.
