POSITION: Events Coordinator Intern, Fire Safety Education Unit (part-time)
ORGANIZATION: FDNY Bureau of Community Affairs
Job Description: This position is funded by the FDNY Foundation. Reporting directly to the Administrator of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit, the successful candidate will:
- Schedule fire safety education presentations and events through effective communication and coordination with representatives from schools (mostly Pre-k through 8th grade), community boards, faith-based organizations, tenant/resident associations, civic organizations, and other agencies
- Enter and close out scheduled events in the unit’s tracking system
- Administer unit educational campaigns and public efforts to increase awareness of life safety strategies that revolve around fire prevention
- Assist with the implementation of outreach strategies to ensure the unit is proactively accessing communities most affected by fire injuries/deaths
- Coordinate and track new outreach initiatives with all Department of Education schools throughout the five boroughs
- Monitor, input, and assign educators to events, and into the tracking system
- Monitor and assist with the coordination of the Department of Homeland Security Grant initiative. The grant places a special focus on installing fire alarms to the City’s most vulnerable populations and at-risk communities
- Assist with timekeeping, budget planning and allocation, answer phones, and all aspects of office managing
Preferred Skills: Proficient in Word and Excel. Candidate must possess superb organizational and interpersonal skills. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are also required. Strong ability to work independently. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and within prescribed deadlines, as required.

POSITION: Conservation and Health Post Doctoral Research Scientist
ORGANIZATION: EcoHealth Alliance – Conservation and Health Team
EcoHealth Alliance is seeking a Post Doctoral Research Scientist with ecologist or spatial ecologist with excellent analytical skills, experience collecting ecological field data including conducting wildlife surveys, biodiversity monitoring, and ecosystem services assessment. The applicant must have a proven track record of high-quality work analyzing the relationships between environmental variables and biodiversity and/or disease emergence. This full-time position is based at EcoHealth Alliance in New York City and will involve international travel for field work in remote areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Conservation & Health Team, this position will:
- Work collaboratively with staff to write grants and proposals
- Project coordination and budget management
- Provide administrative support for Conservation and Health Team programs, including contract preparation, budget tracking, credit card and expense reporting, and meeting scheduling
- Draft and submit grant and other funding applications, and reports
- Collaborate/lead on data collection, training for projects related to conservation & health
- Design and execute analytical analysis to understand the links between environmental variables and disease emergence
- Execute ecological analysis for different projects
- Engage with EcoHealth Alliance scientists and partners
- Lead paper writing and statistical analysis about land use change, biodiversity, human health and similar topics
- Work with the EcoHealth Alliance modeling team and external collaborators to develop scientific research projects on emerging disease ecology, land-use change, biodiversity and human health and well-being
- Help set institutional direction as well as identify new opportunities and help to secure funding for them
- Provide research, programmatic, and administrative support for the Conservation and Health team
- Coordinate and take minutes for meetings, workshops, and calls as well as report and submit timesheets and expense reporting
- Assist in some outreach to donors, potential collaborators, and other institutions at conferences, scientific, and public meetings may be required
- Be responsible for grant management, program coordination, and cultivating relationships with funders
QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD in Ecological or Biological Sciences and strong analytical skills
- Experience in disease ecology/ecology/modeling (at least two years)
- Publications demonstrating analytical skills and grant writing experience
- Experience with traditional (GLM) and novel methodologies (machine learning and Bayseian analysis), knowledge of ecological niche models or SIR models, and experience with R/Phyton/Google Earth Engine
- Experience with landscape ecology, remote sensing, land use mapping, and field work in remote and tropical areas
- Enthusiasm for understanding disease emergence and the links with ecological determinants
- Positive and constructive attitude in solving complex problems
- Creativity to identify analytical strategies and proxy datasets for novel diseases
- Strong sense of team spirit and cultural sensitivity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Fluency in English

POSITION: Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program (ASMP)
ORGANIZATION: New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS)
Become part of the Fall 2023 ASMP cohort! We welcome STEM professionals interested in sharing their passion for the sciences, as well as those pursuing graduate students, and postdoc degrees. In addition to the chance to develop science communication, outreach, and mentoring skills, accepted participants receive a stipend and a complimentary 1-year membership to the Academy!
This program places practicing scientists in NYC public school classrooms with school-based educators as guest mentors. The goal is not only to spark curiosity in young minds but also to reignite the scientist’s genuine love for the STEM world. Weekly mentorship sessions will be supported by a curriculum of 60-minute-long hands-on STEM activities, with the goal of supporting mentees’ STEM identities while offering the scientist new agency in the role of a mentor. The commitment for scientists will involve 10-weekly 1-hour sessions with their matched afterschool classroom between October 2nd – February 2nd, 2024.
Fall 2023 curriculum: For the Fall 2023 semester, the Academy will offer a hands-on, phenomena-based curriculum called “Collaborative Communities” which invites students to explore STEM practices with a focus on supporting biodiversity, resource management, and renewable energy in urban areas. This course is designed to inspire students to develop a love of science through a collection of fun phenomena-based experiments. Guided by scientist mentors, this course will expose students to the wide range of exciting careers that are possible in science and technology with a focus on how our daily life shapes our environment. Students will learn to apply scientific methodology and concepts to real-life examples and be able to discuss the critical shift towards advancing sustainable urban transformation.

POSITION: Health Policy Intern

Essential Duties:
- Assist with research and drafting advocacy documents used with organizations and legislative offices, including fact sheets, advocacy alerts, reports, position papers, presentations, newsletters, and coalition letters
- Monitor and track legislative hearings, regulatory agencies and coalition meetings with expectation of developing notes, summaries, reports, and briefs in a timely manner

Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with a team-oriented approach, proven ability to be flexible in job role, and adaptability to changing dynamics of a department. Effective communication with supervisor to ensure needs are met to perform the work effectively.

Must be able to work independently and be willing to ask team members for clarification to maintain effective workflow. Expected to know basic information about MHM services, willing to follow protocol and chain of command, and dress and speak professionally.
