Three CUNY SPH faculty were awarded 2023 CUNY Interdisciplinary Research Grants for their innovative works. Each project will receive $40,000 in funding.

Assistant Professors Zach Shahn and Mustafa Hussein, along with Baruch College Professor Dahlia Remler, will receive funding for their project, “Reaching Across the Disciplinary Aisle: a New Biostatistical Difference-in-Differences Approach for Health and Social Policy Research.”

The team will study a new statistical method for causal inference (developed by Shahn and others), which intersects with recent developments in econometrics and presents a uniquely versatile approach for applied researchers in observational and quasi-experimental social science research.

The three investigators will work together to apply the new approach to substantive problems, explore the practical considerations that arise in real-world applications and contrast and communicate its capabilities vis-à-vis other recent approaches to cross-disciplinary audiences.

Assistant Professor Chloe Teasdale and Hunter College Associate Professor Geetha Gopalan also received funding for their project, “Missed medical care and delayed diagnoses in children and adolescents in and around New York City during the COVID‐19 pandemic.”

The study will utilize data from the largest medical system serving the Bronx, NY and surrounding areas to describe trends in medical visits for preventive care, in‐person sick visits and care from school‐based health clinics over three years (2020‐2022). The researchers aim to more fully characterize the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on long‐term trends in uptake of routine and acute medical and mental health care for children and adolescents, including increases in telehealth.
