POSITION: Child Welfare – Independent Study (3-credit ,Spring 2023)

Dr. Diana Romero, Professor in the Department of Community Health and Social Sciences, has a 3-credit independent study opportunity for an MPH or PhD level student from CUNY SPH who is interested in the field of child welfare during the Spring 2023 semester.

The student will work with Dr. Romero approximately 9 hours/wk (1 credit = 3 hours) to conduct and analyze a series key-informant interviews (KII) with workers in five different occupational groups in child welfare to examine the effect of secondary trauma (ST) and/or burnout on their engagement in and success with child welfare cases.

POSITION: Nutritionist

ORGANIZATION: Public Health Solutions – NYC Neighborhood WIC

PHS’ Community Health and Nutrition Access Program helps New York residents obtain free or low-cost health insurance coverage, apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as Food Stamps), and through our WIC program, provides nutrition education sessions led by WIC nutritionists on healthy eating and physical activity, breastfeeding support, and eWIC cards to purchase nutritious foods. Our staff members are culturally and linguistically competent and identify with the communities they serve. They help clients navigate through what can be a complicated and confusing application process, step by step. Each year, we help over 22,000 people apply for or renew free or low-cost health insurance coverage, 14,000 people to apply for SNAP, and 35,000 eligible pregnant and nursing women and children up to five years of age to enroll in the New York State WIC (Women Infants and Children) Program. 

Under direct supervision of the Center Manager, the Qualified Nutritionist is responsible for the assessment of the WIC eligibility of applicants, direct implementation of nutrition education components, participant-centered nutrition services and support to WIC clients.

Qualification Requirements:

  • B.S. or B.A. in Food and Nutrition, including at least 18 semester credits in nutrition.
  • Two years of professional experience in nutrition.
  • Registered Dietitian preferred but not required: Completion of an approved hospital dietetic internship which satisfies requirements for Registered Dietitian (The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) or RD eligible and NY State certification.
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with computers and basic word processing, and good data entry skills.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish).
  • Customer service experience preferred 
  • Possess strong communication skills (listening, written, oral, and public speaking)  
  • Dedicated to helping improve the lives of disenfranchised and marginalized communities.  
  • Excellent team player with the ability to be flexible and work collaboratively and respectfully.  
  • Ability to embrace diversity; Possesses people and cultural competency skills.

POSITION: Assistant Professor, Health Policy 

ORGANIZATION: University of Texas at Austin 

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking outstanding applicants for an Assistant Professor of Instruction position in the Public Health Degree Program in the College of Natural Sciences.

Qualified candidates will have a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or DrPH) in public health or a related field. We seek a candidate qualified to teach health policy and a range of courses in the public health core curriculum; we seek instructors familiar with multiple modalities, yet available to teach full-time and in-person.  Thus, the ideal candidate will have broad experience in public health and specialized knowledge/experience in one or more core areas or disciplines of public health, including health policy.  Past experience in providing public health or related services is highly desirable; past experience in undergraduate teaching and/or mentoring students is highly desirable. POSITION: Environmental Health Fellowship Program – ASPPH/EPA

ORGANIZATION:  Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

The goal of the ASPPH/EPA Environmental Health Fellowship Program is to provide professional training and opportunities for early-career public health professionals to be involved with EPA on current and emerging environmental public health needs.

Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities for a period of one-year (estimated start-date is between October 1, 2023 and November 1, 2023, and will end 12 months later). There is the possibility of a one-year extension, but this is not guaranteed.

The annual training stipend for the fellowship positions is $60,471 for Masters level candidates, and $73,626 for candidates with advanced graduate degrees (MD, PhD, DrPH, JD, etc.). The fellowship training stipend is intended to cover all personal living expenses. In addition to the fellowship training stipend, fellows will have access to a $10,000 “general fellowship allowance” that is intended to offset the cost of health insurance premium expenses incurred during the one year fellowship period. The “general fellowship allowance” may also be used to cover approved project-related travel, training, journal subscriptions, association dues, etc.

POSITION: Science Policy Scholar Travel Awards (up to $3,000)

The Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) is offering Science Policy Scholar Travel Awards to support the development of junior investigators who are interested in women’s health or sex and gender differences and are also interested in research policy. The awards, of up to $3,000 each, will support the attendance of two investigators at the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) Annual Meeting on May 7–11, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

This OSSD Annual Meeting will provide an opportunity for investigators to stay informed about the most recent advances in research and policy regarding sex differences in health and disease

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is the specialized international health agency for the Americas. It works with countries throughout the region to improve and protect people’s health. PAHO wears two institutional hats: it is the specialized health agency of the Inter-American System and also serves as Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO), the specialized health agency of the United Nations. PAHO offers internships in our country – and regional offices, as well as at headquarters.

The PAHO internship program has three objectives:
a) to provide a framework for assigning students from diverse academic backgrounds to PAHO programs, where educational experience can be enhanced through practical work assignments;
b) to expose students to the work of PAHO and
c) to provide PAHO programs with the assistance of students specializing in various fields. Most students are placed in health-related programs, although placements in other area of work like for example communication, external relations, finance or human resources are also possible.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Under the supervision of a technical expert in the respective area, interns are assigned a project based on agreed terms of references and in line with their skills set. These terms of references typically include some or all of the following responsibilities:

  • review literature and conduct literature surveys
  • undertake web research and data collection on specific subject area organize data and documents
  • participate in the development of tools and guidelines
  • assist in drafting, formatting and editing policy briefs, tool kits, guides/manuals, hand-outs, brochures and reports
  • assist in organizing workshops, meetings, conferences, events
  • participate in on-going departmental projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education Are enrolled in a degree program and have completed their first university degree (i.e., bachelor’s degree) or have graduated within the last two years from a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral program

  • Communication

All interns should be able to demonstrate the following skills in line with the WHO core competencies:

  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Showing willingness to learn from mistakes

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of specialized computer programs, for example, statistical software such as XLStat may be an advantage.

Experience Depending on the area of interest, the below experience may be needed and/or would be an advantage.

  • Experience in research and/or in drafting reports
  • Experience in the subject area through academic work or research
  • Field and/or developing country experience
  • Experience with data analysis, statistical packages and interest in the design of graphical display and analysis of health information in an international comparative perspective, such as for health system performance assessment
  • More specific experience such as specialized computer programs

Languages – Fluency in one of PAHO’s working languages (reading, writing and speaking). PAHO official languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. Knowledge of the local language in some duty stations can be an asset.

Age – Interns should be at least twenty years of age on the date of application.

Stipend

  • PAHO Interns will be provided with a stipend.
  • Living abroad is expensive and finding accommodation can be challenging. All intern candidates should be aware of these factors before they consider applying for a PAHO Internship.
  • If selected for a PAHO Internship, you will be required to provide certified copies of proof of enrolment in a course of studies and a medical certificate of fitness for work.

POSITION: Summer Interns

RMI is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization of experts across disciplines working to accelerate the clean energy transition and improve lives. Since our founding in 1982 by Amory Lovins, RMI’s chairman emeritus, we have grown to over 500 staff working on four continents with a global reach and reputation.

We welcome 20 to 40 interns every summer into our three-month internship program. It is a highly competitive and rewarding experience in which you are fully integrated into an existing project team where your opinions are valued.

You work a 40-hour week so really get a chance to test drive a career in the space. You have your own scope of work and a dedicated mentor who guides you as you get to apply your education to the workplace. You attend a workshop on presentation skills and deliver a presentation on your summer’s work to the company at the close of the program.

POSITION: 2023 Scholarship Program

ORGANIZATION: The LAGRANT Foundation (TLF)

Each year, The LAGRANT Foundation provides scholarships to ethnic minority students who are attending accredited institutions and are pursuing careers in the fields of advertising, marketing or public relations. Graduate & Ph.D. student applicants meeting the following criteria and completing the online application will be considered for The LAGRANT Foundation (TLF) scholarship in the amount of $3,250.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or DACA recipient
  • Must be a member of one of the following ethnic groups: African American/Black, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino or Native American/American Indian
  • Must be a full-time student at a four-year, accredited institution in the U.S., carrying a total of 9 units or more per semester/quarter
  • *Must have a minimum of 3.2 GPA (if you do not meet this requirement, please see the application checklist below)
  • MUST major in a field of study that has an emphasis in advertising, marketing, public relations

  • Recipients MUST be available to participate in the scholarship activities from either May 7 – May 10 2023, May 14 – May 16 2023, or May 21 – May 23 2023. Forty (40) graduate and Ph.D. scholarship recipients will receive a trip to either New York City, Portland, OR, or Minneapolis, MN where they will participate in career building activities, including a welcome dinner with a keynote speaker, three to four daylong career development & professional workshops and a scholarship & donor recognition reception.
