POSITION: PhD Student Fellow (part-time)
ORGANIZATION: CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute
The CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute is an academic research and action center based at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy. Our work focuses on providing evidence to inform public policies that promote equitable access to healthy, affordable food, fair labor practices in the food chain, and reduction in diet-related diseases.
The Institute is seeking to hire a PhD Student Fellow who will partner with us over a two-year period and assist the team with the implementation of a research project focusing on advancing food equity in the New York metropolitan region. The project will help build a task force of CUNY and regional stakeholders and provide food justice advocates and supporters with the evidence to persuade policy makers and the public about the value, public benefits, and merits of their policy proposals, including regional food systems proposals in the domains of institutional food procurement, food labor, and the reduction of unhealthy food marketing and diet-related disease.
The Fellow will assist the Institute research team and regional task force members with the development of detailed plans to improve food procurement by public agencies, address poor working conditions for low-wage food workers, and cope with diet-related diseases that contribute to health inequities. The Fellowship also involves identification, engagement, and the maintenance of working relationships with relevant CUNY and external stakeholder organizations in NYC and the metropolitan region and the quarterly convening of a taskforce of experts.
Fellows should be enrolled in a CUNY PhD Program in public health or a related field and be in good academic standing. The ideal candidate for this Fellowship will have experience working on regional food systems, food policy issues, and/or the underlying causes of health inequities in the New York metropolitan region. Superior writing skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively are required. The faculty supervisors for the Fellowship will be Dr. Nick Freudenberg, Distinguished Professor of Public Health at CUNY SPH and Co-Founder and Senior Faculty Fellow at CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute and Dr. Nevin Cohen, Associate Professor at CUNY SPH and Director of the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute.
Candidates should submit your resume/CV and a cover letter stating your interest and background in food policy. Interested applicants can contact Craig Willingham, Managing Director of the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute (Craig.Willingham@sph.cuny.edu)
