POSITION: Part-Time Workshop Leader – University Skills Immersion Program (USIP) 

ORGANIZATION: CUNY Hostos Community College 

The University Skills Immersion Program (USIP) is a workshop offered in the Winter and Spring terms. USIP gives students the opportunity to gain reading and writing proficiency so that they are prepared for credit-bearing freshman composition.

Job Description: Use standardized curricula and specific learning objectives to lead developmental composition workshops.

Position Description:

Workshop Leaders are responsible for using standardized curricula to deliver lessons to develop students’ reading and writing skills: reading and annotating texts, taking notes, active learning, and basic writing composition. Workshop Leaders work with the program Director to discuss concerns, reinforce learning, and share student updates. Regular responsibilities include:

  •  Attend all professional development activities
  • Lead USIP workshops (3 hours per day for approximately 2.5 weeks totaling 36 hours)
  •  Hold 1 office hour per week
  •  Maintain paperwork and grading associated with workshops

General Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must be enrolled in or have graduated from an MA/MS/MFA/PhD program
  • Applicant must be in good academic standing (current cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above)
  • Applicant must be dedicated to educational access
  • Applicant must have the ability to conduct activities to achieve learning objectives
  • Applicant must have the ability to effectively communicate with students and staff, and to provide necessary instruction and feedback
  • Applicant must have the ability to provide appropriate guidance and group management
  • Applicant must have the ability to manage complex tasks with large (20-25 person) groups

Additionally, Leaders must

  • 1. Deliver existing workshop curricula with guidance from college faculty
  • 2. Use Blackboard educational technology to facilitate lessons and collect student work
  • 3. Communicate with administrative staff as necessary regarding students’ performance and outcomes

  • Plan and conduct activities to achieve workshop objectives using existing curricula
  • Effectively communicate with enrollees and staff

Time Commitment and Required Availability

Workshop Leaders must be available for an initial orientation, then available to teach in person and teach synchronously online via Blackboard from the first day of the workshop until the conclusion of the session (usually two to three weeks). Time commitments for one section include:

  • 5 hour PD Orientation (3 in December and 2 in January)
  • Weekly office hours: 1 hour
  • Weekly planning/reading and responding to student papers: 3 hours
  • Weekly Workshop: 3 hours per day for 2.5 weeks (36 hours total)
  • Session Total: 50 hours

Compensation range: $1,000-$3000 depending on the number of sections led

  • Conduct curriculum-based nutrition education classes/workshops for students, in grades Pre-K through 12
  • Facilitate cooking lessons to teach students healthy recipes, cooking techniques, kitchen tools and equipment, and safety
  • Maintain a positive classroom environment conducive to learning, creativity, safety, and fun
  • For those working with students in Pre-K – grade 2, incorporate songs, puppet shows, arts and crafts, and a variety of creative approaches to teach healthy eating
  • Advocate healthier eating for students, families, and staff
  • Provide clear classroom instructions, including learning objectives and transitions
  • Provide consistent motivation, enthusiasm, and role modeling for healthy lifestyle choices

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food studies, culinary arts or related field
  • Experience implementing hands-on nutrition education and cooking activities in school-based, after-school, camp, and/or community-based settings
  • Proficient in nutrition concepts and cooking skills

  • Incorporate sports, games, and a variety of other unique and exciting activities in a positive, fun environment
  • Adapt activities to creatively engage children with various skill sets and interests
  • Implement physical activities in a variety of settings, including small classrooms, cafeteria, and gymnasium

  • Gather height and weight measurements and facilitate PACER fitness test

POSITION: Ferguson RISE Fellow (6 months; part-time)

ORGANIZATION: RISE (Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement) Fellowship

The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases RISE (Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement) Fellowship supports public health research and professional development in the areas of infectious diseases and health disparities, with a special focus on increasing knowledge and interest in public health research careers among students from underrepresented populations. The fellowship program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Ferguson RISE fellows may participate in public health research experiences lasting 12 months (full-time), nine weeks (summer) or six months (part-time or full-time, beginning in February). Fellows may also gain clinical experience and develop professional leadership skills in the public health field. All fellows participate in an orientation at Kennedy Krieger Institute focusing on understanding health disparities and career opportunities in public health. Following orientation, fellows learn about research design and analysis and participate in research projects in infectious diseases, health disparities, men’s health, mental health, adverse childhood experiences, LGBTQ+ health, developmental disabilities, cancer, cardiovascular health, or prevention of and treatment for drug dependence. 

Fellowship Eligibility, Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a graduate program in public health, allied health or one of the social sciences, or must be a recent (within 12 months) master’s or doctoral degree recipient in one of these fields. Students with graduate degrees received within 12 months of the current Ferguson RISE Fellowship orientation (last week in May) are also eligible.
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must be able to commit to the full length of the fellowship.

Students should have a strong interest in research addressing health disparities. Students who are members of underrepresented populations as defined by the federal government (diversity.nih.gov/about-us/population-underrepresented) are strongly encouraged to apply.

POSITION: Diversity Scholars Fellowship Program

ORGANIZATION: Ithaca College 

The Ithaca College Diversity Scholars Program was created to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of Ithaca College faculty and, in so doing, bring fresh perspectives to the college’s curriculum and the learning experiences offered to students.

Fellowships are for the academic year (August 15, 2023 to May 31, 2024) and are non-renewable. Scholars will receive a $42,000 stipend, $5,000 in travel/professional development support, relocation reimbursement, office space, health benefits, and access to Ithaca College and Cornell University libraries. Scholars will teach one course in the fall semester and one course in the spring semester; will be mentored by a faculty member in the host department; will be expected to participate in one official function per semester and monthly professionalization meetings; and must partake in an exit-interview. The Department of Health Promotion, Health Sciences and Public Health is seeking a predoctoral fellow with interest or research in one or more of the following areas: 1) Health Disparities, 2) Epidemiology, 3) Policy and Health Care Systems,  4) social determinants of health. The twelve full-time department faculty are from several different disciplines, including public health, health sciences, social sciences, humanities, and education.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited PhD granting program; display a commitment to a career in teaching at the college or university level and scholarly promise. Applicants must also be authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not provided for this position.Prior to August 15, 2023, applicants must be advanced to candidacy at their home institution. The Caucus CUNY Scholars Program is a local internship program for students who are interested in community service and the State Legislature. The Program allows students to learn about the work performed by the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus, as well as the services provided by their Legislature to communities of need in the City of New York.

The Caucus CUNY Program was designed for students who wish to study legislative service in New York State, but who are unable to relocate to Albany for a full spring semester. Selected students are assigned to the district offices of New York State legislators comprising membership on the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus. Students are assigned to district offices based on their residence, policy interests, skills sets, etc. Once assigned, students perform substantive tasks such as constituent case management, legislative research and assistance, and a host of other responsibilities. 

Caucus CUNY Scholars also participate in the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus weekend conference, as well as other special events sponsored by the Caucus and City University. This combination of on campus and off campus activities constitutes the core of the Caucus CUNY Scholars Program—an academically rigorous experience for students considering careers and involvement in public service.

The New York City Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs is partly coordinated by ETR Internship Program and operates on all CUNY college campuses. Internship faculty on each campus provide students with guided and rigorous academic course work to produce a theoretically grounded, yet practical understanding of New York City government and public affairs. Students are placed throughout the five boroughs, in governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations. Students are able to network, gain office experience and begin grasp the culture of public service professionals.

Students should apply to participate in the program prior to the internship. The internship runs for the length of each semester. Participation includes attendance at the CUNY Forum, a panel discussion broadcast on CUNY-TV about a different policy issue each month of the semester.

POSITION: Post-doctoral scientist or Master level (MS/MPH) epidemiologist

The laboratory of Professor Robert Burk at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein) is well recognized for its multi-disciplinary work in molecular, epidemiologic and laboratory science. Dr. Agalliu is a physician and cancer epidemiologist with expertise in genetic and environmental studies of cancer. 

There is an opening for a post-doctoral scientist or master level (MS/MPH) epidemiologist with strong background in genetic and/or cancer epidemiology to work on a study investigating the role of rare germline mutations in BRCA1/2 genes and common genetic variants (SNPs) in prostate cancer etiology and survival, as well as other cancers in a founder population (Ashkenazim). Research Area: Genetic Epidemiology of Prostate Cancer and Other Cancers in Founder Populations 

Position Description and Qualifications: Seeking highly motivated applicant(s) with optimism, patience, idealism and courage with outstanding training in epidemiology and biostatistics and an interest in genetic and/or cancer epidemiology. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Epidemiology or MS/MPH in Epidemiology with strong background in genetic or cancer epidemiology and experience in managining and analyzing large datasets. Solid writing, oral and interpersonal communications skills are required. Knowledge of statistical programming and statistical data analysis using softwares such as STATA, SAS, SPSS, and R is also required. Familiarity with medical terminology is  preferred, but not required.

POSITION:  Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF)

ORGANIZATION: Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE)

Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF) is a 2-year fellowship funded by CDC in which recent graduates and early career professionals work in a state or local health agency under the guidance of two experienced mentors. 

  • Fellows work in a full-time role and will work on informatics projects at their host site. 
  • Some of the top benefits of this program, according to former fellows, are the mentorship, connection with their peer cohort, and flexibility to take on a variety of projects and expand their skill set.

POSITION: Summer Health Equity Research 

ORGANIZATION: Weill Cornell Medicine Career Advancement for Research in Health Equity (CARE T37

The Weill Cornell Medicine Career Advancement for Research in Health Equity (CARE T37) program, which is made possible (in part) by 1T37MD014220 from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, is intended to provide early exposure to health equity research and global health for pre-doc and post-doctoral trainees. The long-term goal of this program is to increase the diversity and number of scientists working across disciplines to improve health equity and global health. In no particular order, components of the CARE program include an intensive 2-month summer didactic session that provides a general introduction to healthcare/scientific research fundamentals; project—based mentoring for research experience; and opportunities for global health experience at NIH-funded global health research sites in developing countries such as Haiti, Brazil, Tanzania, and Ghana.

About the Program: The CARE T37 program aims to identify talented URM pre- and post-doctoral trainees across the health sciences who are considering careers in health equity and global health research. Regardless of their ultimate career objectives, it is essential that all trainees receive a well-grounded exposure to research fundamentals and experience. Selected trainees of the program will engage in a mentored research experience tailored to their individual career and research goals. Personalized research experiences may include: a) participating in our intensive summer research training session, b) engaging in a mentored research project, and c) participating in a mentored global health experience. For eligible trainees the program provides stipend support to help defray living expenses in NYC during the intensive summer didactic session and/or to support trainees during the mentored research experience at NIH-funded select global health sites.

Eligibility

The program is open to qualified candidates from Weill Cornell Medicine as well as other colleges and institutions. Medical students, Terminal PhD students, Residents, and Post-doctoral students/Medical fellows who are from underrepresented populations (individuals from African American, Hispanic, Native/American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Island populations, individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), and those with disabilities) should consider applying to the program. Although the program will consider trainees at any stage of the academic healthcare training continuum (from medical student, to resident, to fellowship/post-doc), post-doctoral students/medical fellows with a strong interest to pursue a career in scientific research and health equity and/or global health are strongly encouraged to apply.

Eligible candidates must be:

  • A citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment.
  • Predoctoral trainees must be enrolled in a program leading to a PhD or in an equivalent health sciences research doctoral degree program. (e.g. medical school student or terminal PhD student in the health sciences)
  • Postdoctoral trainees must have received, as of the beginning date of the appointment, a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution.
  • An under-represented minority in medicine (URiM), or from underrepresented populations, and/or have a strong and demonstrated academic interest in health equity/disparities focused research.
  • Not currently participating in any NIH funded training program such as T32.

POSITION: Emerging Leaders of Color (ELC) Fellowship

ORGANIZATION: National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP)

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is accepting applications for the Emerging Leaders of Color (ELC) Fellowship. This program is designed to provide early-career individuals from communities of color an opportunity to:

  • Learn about state health policy from a state leader of color
  • Develop a project with that leader
  • Engage in educational and professional development
  • Cultivate support within the state health policy community

NASHP is a nonpartisan organization of, by, and for state policymakers, committed to developing and advancing health policy innovations and solutions. NASHP provides a unique forum for the productive exchange of strategies across state government, including the legislative and executive branches. NASHP’s work is guided by the Academy’s executive committee and four steering committees: Behavioral Health | Aging, and Disability | Child and Family Health | Coverage, Cost, and Value | Population and Public Health. 

The ELC fellowship runs from February 2023 through October 2023 and requires individuals to commit approximately 35 hours a month to fellowship work. Each fellow is provided a total stipend of $6,300 and travel expenses to attend NASHP’s annual health policy conference, visit Washington, DC for a day of program activities, and visit the state of their advisor.

POSITION: Post Doctoral Fellow – Pharmaceutical law and health services research

ORGANIZATION: Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital – Program On Regulation, Therapeutics, And Law (PORTAL)

The Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Medicine and Harvard Medical School invites its 2023 round of applications for postdoctoral fellows in pharmaceutical law and health services research.

Current fellows have studied FDA regulation, patents, drug access and costs, and competition in the therapeutic marketplace. Other areas of focus include intellectual property, ethics, and comparative effectiveness, as well as the development, approval, and evidence-based use of drugs, devices, vaccines, procedures, and diagnostics.

Applications are invited from researchers with doctoral degrees (J.D., M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent) or who will complete such training by July 2023. Fellows will have an appointment at Harvard Medical School, receive close mentorship from faculty members in the Division, and engage in one or more projects intended to start their careers in law and public health research. Fellowship length will vary depending on the candidate (Minimum: 1 year).

The Excellence in Mentorship of UnderRepresented Groups (EMURG) for Health Equity Leaders Fellowship Program supports federal public health careers and professional development to address health disparities. POSITION: Workgroup coordinator  

ORGANIZATION:  Social Drivers of Health (SDOH) Connections Workgroup 

This workgroup coordinator (WC) role supports the SDOH Connections Workgroup, a national invitation-only virtual community of practice, research, and technology leaders focused on interventions to address social drivers of health (SDOH). 

The group meets approximately monthly. A typical meeting includes one or two presentations and a lot of interaction both with the speakers and with other members of the group. Founded in mid-2021, the group’s format and membership continue to evolve. 

Primary responsibilities for the coordinator include:

  • Help plan workgroup meetings, including developing meeting agendas and checklists, coordinating with presenters, and emailing participants.
  • Ensure technology (primarily Zoom) is functional for all participants during SDOH Connections Workgroup meetings.
  • Maintain an online folder system and documentation for the project team.
  • Attend regular (currently bi-weekly) online team meetings.

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Contribute to sourcing discussion topics and speakers.
  • Participate in agenda and meeting cadence development.
  • Provide input on future directions of the work group.
  • Facilitate portions of workgroup meetings, such as Q&A.
  • Take notes during interviews/discussions with field leaders.

While graduate students have held this position previously, pursuing an advanced degree is not a requirement for this position.

Necessary skills & qualifications include:

  • Interest in and curiosity about social drivers of health.
  • Proficiency with software like Zoom, Google Sheets and Forms, PollEv, PowerPoint, etc., including strategies for how to use them in interactive ways during meetings.
  • Calm under pressure.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Organized self-starter willing to improve.
  • Able to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication. ● Able to work a flexible schedule, including some weekdays between 12PM-5PM ET and some team meetings after 5 pm ET. Preferred qualifications and experience:
  • Background knowledge of SDOH policies and programs.
  • Prior experience with a health system or community-based organization.

Compensation: $25 / hour;  Anticipated +/- 10 hours of work per month.
