We are pleased to announce that Sherry Adams, LCSW, formerly the CUNY SPH Student Wellness Counselor, has been appointed Director of Counseling and Wellness.
Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from City College of New York and a Master of Social Work degree from SUNY Stony Brook. She has worked in a range of mental health settings including community-based organizations, schools, and hospitals. She has taken special interest in decreasing stigma related to accessing mental health care in marginalized communities.
Before joining CUNY SPH in March of 2020, Adams served as a Student Personal Counselor at Bronx Community College’s counseling center. Upon her arrival at CUNY SPH, she immediately implemented crucial wellness services informed by feedback from CUNY SPH students. Since then, she has represented CUNY SPH on the Wellness Center Director’s Council (which she will continue to do) and joined the CUNY LGBTQI+ Council and its Mental Health, Wellness, and Security Subcommittee.
Adams will continue to offer counseling and develop student wellness events including support groups. She will also provide supervision for Counseling and Wellness Services’ recently onboarded part-time Student Wellness Counselor and field instruction for its two graduate level Social Work Interns. It is her goal to increase student engagement in wellness events and normalize personal counseling as a self-care activity that promotes academic success.
Please join us in congratulating Sherry, who can be reached at sherry.adams@sph.cuny.edu.
