POSITION:  CUNY R.O.L.L. Program Director 

ORGANIZATION: CUNY Medgar Evers College – Center for Black Literature

The CUNY Center for Black Literature, Re-Envisioning Our Lives through Literature (R.O.L.L.) program is a Literary Program for High School Students in NYC, and seeks a part-time Program Director (PD).

The PD reports to the Center for Black Literature director of literary programs. The PD is responsible for the administrative management and operation of R.O.L.L. and has oversight for teaching artists, professional development, and program coordination. She/He is also a liaison between the principal and teachers of each target school and maintains communication between each group. The program director also provides direction and assistance to teaching artists around scheduling educational trips, resource and art materials, and guest artists. All teaching artists, classroom teachers, and the professional development coordinator report directly to the program director with any issues, concerns, or immediate needs. The program director is also responsible for the coordination of activities related to the closing program for each semester. Planning for the program will occur in the fall and implementation of the program will be in the spring. The Center for Black Literature will provide administrative support as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PROGRAM DIRECTOR

  • Overall planning and management of the program, including administrative items (i.e.,program applications, evaluations, trip logistics, etc.).
  • Regular meetings with the director of literary programs.
  • Liaison with principals, teachers, and teaching artists to develop a program theme, curriculum outline, as well as lesson plans and teaching strategies.
  • Liaison with professional development coordinator – ensuring that teachers and teaching artists are on target with outline goals and/ or required items.
  • Coordination of meetings as required for involved staff (teachers, professional development coordinator, teaching artists, etc.).
  • Coordination of marketing and promotion of the program with the Center’s communications and marketing team members.
  • Coordination of culminating program.
  • Creation of R.O.L.L. Anthology with teaching artists and teachers.
  • Coordination of trips and guest artists in collaboration with teaching artists.
  • Coordination of evaluation activities for the program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated administrative management of art or non profitrelated program
  • Commitment to the mission of the Center and of Medgar Evers College, CUNY
  • Experience in working with teaching artists
  • Experience in working with Department of Education teachers and leadership personnel

POSITION:  Teaching Artist (Part Time) 

ORGANIZATION: CUNY Medgar Evers College – Center for Black Literature

The CUNY Center for Black Literature, Re-Envisioning Our Lives through Literature (R.O.L.L.) program is a Literary Program for High School Students in NYC, and seeks a part-time Teaching Artist (TA).  The premise of R.O.L.L. is that literature should be integrated into the English Language Arts curriculum in creative ways that may include drama, poetry, the spoken word, and story. The emphasis of this program is to incorporate African diaspora literature into the classroom. Through reading, studying, and writing about this literature, students build their knowledge base about literature from another culture and improve their critical reading and writing skills.

The Teaching Artist (TA) reports to the Re-Envisioning Our Lives through Literature program director. Planning for the program will occur in the fall and implementation of the program will be in the spring. She/he is responsible for the following activities:

  • Providing students and teachers with specific strategies for enhancing dramatic writing, creative writing, spoken word, and performance skills.
  • Providing support to instructors and students for compiling creative renditions of literary texts.
  • Collaborating with teachers and professional development coach in the creation of lesson plans to support the goals of R.O.L.L.
  • Collaborating with students and teachers in producing the R.O.L.L. closing program.
  • Collaborating with teachers and students in creating content for the R.O.L.L. Anthology.
  • Collaborating with Program Director in scheduling trips and guest artists.
  • Providing an evaluation of the program.

POSITION: Graduate Scholar Legislative Public Affairs Intern 

ORGANIZATION: New York State Assembly 

Each year, the New York State Assembly offers a unique experiential learning opportunity for current graduate students (or recent graduates) who have a strong interest in the legislative process. The NYS Assembly Internships program is open to all accredited graduate programs and academic disciplines. Program participants are placed in the offices of Assembly committee chairs or central staff and serve in a professional staff capacity, supplemented with learning opportunities directed toward applying academic coursework to professional development. Successful applicants are paid a stipend of $17,000 for the duration of the program, which runs over the course of the six-month legislative session (January to June 2023). Application deadline is Friday, October 21, 2022.

The Assembly GRADUATE INTERNSHIP provides a professional development opportunity for up to 10 qualified applicants to serve as full-time staff during legislative session, assisting in policy analysis, legislative research, communications and constituent services. Graduate Scholars have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the legislative process and New York State government, as well as apply their ideas and research skills in the legislative process.  The Internship affords a unique opportunity with many of its participants moving to permanent positions in the Assembly, other government agencies, or firms practicing public affairs in the nonprofit or private sectors.

POSITION: Fire Safety Education Events Coordinator Intern 

ORGANIZATION: FDNY Bureau of Community Affair

FDNY Bureau of Community Affairs, the Fire Safety Education unit is looking to hire a part-time college intern. Reporting directly to the Administrator of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit, the successful candidate will:

  • Schedule fire safety education presentations and events through effective communication and coordination with representatives from schools (Pre-k through 8th grade), community boards, faith-based organizations, tenant/resident associations, civic organizations, and other agencies 
  • Enter and close out scheduled events in the unit’s tracking system
  • Administer unit educational campaigns and public efforts to increase awareness of life safety strategies that revolve around fire prevention
  • Assist with the implementation of outreach strategies to ensure the unit is proactively accessing communities most affected by fire injuries/deaths
  • Coordinate and track new outreach initiatives with all Department of Education schools throughout the five boroughs
  • Monitor, input, and assign educators to events, and into the tracking system
  • Monitor and assist with the coordination of the Department of Homeland Security Grant initiative. The grant places a special focus on installing fire alarms to the City’s most vulnerable populations and at-risk communities
  • Assist with timekeeping, budget planning and allocation, answer phones, and all aspects of office managing

Preferred Skills: Proficient in Word and Excel. Candidate must possess superb organizational and interpersonal skills. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are also required. Strong ability to work independently. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and within prescribed deadlines, as required.

POSITION: Equity Research Fellow

ORGANIZATION: Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI)

Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) is one of the oldest, and largest, community-focused research centers focused on health equity in the country. Uniquely located in a safety-net healthcare system in Chicago, we have worked for over 20 years to reduce health inequities through data-driven research and community health interventions. Now in its 5th year, the SUHI Equity Research Fellows program was designed to strengthen research and collaboration among scientists and universities who share our focus. Fellows generally spend one day a week collaborating on jointly-developed manuscripts, proposals, and other equity-related projects.

Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) and be on the faculty at any US college or university.  The Fellowship runs from Jan 1 – Dec 30, 2023. Fellows will receive a stipend of $15,000.

The Fund for Global Health is focused on “value for money” in U.S. foreign aid for global health. In 2022 we are working to have our aid be more impactful, rather than asking for more money.  We are looking for dedicated and passionate individuals to join our team. This is an opportunity to address major global health challenges and learn effective advocacy skills. 

We are seeking Advocacy Fellows who are constituents of member representatives and senators and to work about 6 hours a week for a minimum of 12 months, with regular small-group coaching by video chat. All activities can be conducted remotely. The Fund for Global Health advocates with Congress on ways to increase the impact of U.S. global health aid. For example, we are advocating to increase U.S. aid for primary health care in the developing world.
