POSITION: Recruitment Support Volunteer
ORGANIZATION: Street Homelessness Advocacy Project (SHAP)
SHAP is looking for a volunteer to help with recruiting volunteers who can respond to inquiries from people experiencing homelessness and manage those expressing interest.
This is a remote/ virtual opportunity requiring approximately 10-15 hours a week with the support from Norman Siegel, NYC-based civil rights, and civil liberties lawyer.
Purpose/Objective:
The Recruitment Support volunteer will support the newly launched Street Homelessness Advocacy Project (SHAP), a partnership between the City of New York and Community Health Care Network, DOE Fund, Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing and the New York Legal Assistance Group. SHAP sends small teams of advocates and city staff out weekly to speak with those experiencing homelessness, building connections and trust to allow the teams to share information to provide resources and supports. The Recruitment Support volunteer will provide support to recruit volunteers and respond to inquiries from people experiencing homelessness and manage those expressing interest.
Location:
This project can be completed from the volunteer’s home, though occasional in person or Zoom meetings may be needed.
Time Commitment:
The hours are flexible throughout the week, with an anticipated 10-15 hours per week. This role will support the initial pilot through October 31, 2022.
Key Responsibilities:
- Returning calls/emails of prospective volunteers and people experiencing homelessness
- Assisting with volunteer intake and screenings, as needed
- Helping schedule and coordinate new volunteer orientations
- Seeking new avenues to recruit volunteers, especially college volunteers
- Providing updates to the SHAP team on volunteer recruitment and progress
Qualifications:
- 18+ years of age
- Strong general organizational abilities (filling out forms, creating forms, scheduling)
- Strong telephone etiquette
- Customer service skills – welcoming and warm disposition a must
- Proficiency in Spanish or another language helpful
Training/Support Provided:
The Recruitment Support Volunteer will receive orientation and continuing support from the SHAP team before starting the role, including:
- The purpose and function of the project
- Logistics on how the flow of the experience should work for people expressing interest in volunteering
- An explanation how to perform all duties required (filling out forms, scheduling, etc.)
Noting SHAP is in need of quick responses to a significant demand for support services – the role will also be tasked with helping the SHAP team figure out best practices and the most effective manner to recruit and onboard volunteers to serve those experiencing homelessness efficiently and with dignity.

Our Behavior Health Home department is currently looking for an MPH level intern for this coming Fall 2022. I was wondering if this can be posted.
The position is unpaid, but flexible hybrid schedule, please see description below:
Location: Hackensack, NJ
Our organization can provide intern experiences related to health education, community outreach, data management/program evaluation, and research. We are willing to work with students to design a mutually beneficial project.
Here is an example of a project we currently have in mind. We’d like to increase health literacy around health insurance and medical care coordination through either an educational event or community outreach. Tasks will include but not limited to:
- Conduct needs assessments utilizing community health data obtained from Bergen County, along with other supporting primary and secondary data.
- Create a curriculum/presentation outline for community health education on navigating health insurance
- Expand toolkits/resources for families to utilize to improve communication during healthcare appointments.
- Update our medical care coordination handbook to include information on navigating health insurance.
Shadow health/wellness educators and nurses during family visits (depending on intern schedule)
- Observe different health education styles and techniques
- Assist with planning health education activities for individual youth/families
- Assist with delivering health education to individual youth/families
- Assist with identifying community resources to help families achieve health/wellness goals
