CUNY Blackboard LTI Update Announcement (for Faculty)

Jul. 28, 2022

Dear Faculty,

Blackboard is in the process of retiring all Blackboard building blocks and replacing them with LTI integrations. LTI integrations offer improved performance and interoperability between the learning management system and vendor-supplied functionality. Before the start of the Fall 2022 semester, CUNY CIS will be making important changes to two Blackboard integrations: Turnitin and Labster.

Turnitin

Turnitin has announced that the current version of their Blackboard integration will be retired on August 31, 2022 and replaced with a new integrated Turnitin LTI tool.  In preparation for the replacement CUNY CIS will enable the new version on Thursday, July 28, 2022.

Once the new version is enabled, instructors and students will only see the new version of the Turnitin integration.  Assignments to allow the submission of outstanding work and any new assignments must be created using the new Turnitin LTI tool.  Student submissions made using the old version of Turnitin will be accessible to instructors via the Blackboard Grade Center and students can see feedback for assignments submitted in the old version through My Grades.  Please note that the new Turnitin LTI tool will appear in a new location in Blackboard, on the Build Content submenu of content areas.

Assistance using the new Turnitin LTI tool is available on the Turnitin websites linked below.  Please remember that CUNY uses Blackboard Original Course View when selecting tutorials from the Turnitin website.

Labster

CUNY CIS will upgrade the current Labster Blackboard integration in July.  In order to allow in progress Summer semester courses to continue to access existing Labster content, CUNY CIS will offer both the old and new versions of Labster in parallel while the Summer semester classes are in session.  We anticipate disabling the old version of Labster on or about August 22nd, after the end of Summer semester courses.  Student data should be downloaded from Labster prior to the retirement of the old tool.  Please note that like Turnitin, the new Labster LTI tool will appear in a new location in Blackboard, on the Build Content submenu of content areas.

However, Labster simulations created with the current version will not work in the new version, so we recommend either not including Labster content in course copies into Fall 2022 semester courses or removing it once the course copy is completed.  All existing Labster simulations will need to be recreated using the new version once it is live.  A follow up email will be sent when the upgrade is completed and you begin working with the new version to assign simulations

Assistance with the upgraded version of Labster is available here:

Both new tools can be found under “Build Content” when working in your weekly content section of Blackboard.

Thank you for your patience during the transition.
