What you’ll do

The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 established a National Wild and Scenic Rivers System to protect and enhance the free-flowing condition, water quality, and identified “outstandingly remarkable values” of designated rivers and streams throughout the United States. This national system currently consists of over 13,400 miles of 226 designated wild and scenic rivers in 41 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. This collaborative project involves working with USDA Forest Service National Headquarters staff and other federal and nongovernmental partners to support needed geospatial and other data enhancements associated with the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Improvements will be geared toward increasing understanding and information sharing associated with designated rivers and rivers found eligible and/or suitable for future designation. What you’ll learn

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of an interagency team in collaboration with wild and scenic rivers program managers and other specialists from the Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as other agency, academic, and nongovernmental partners.

POSITION: Internship

Introduction

The USDA Forest Service Wild & Scenic Rivers (WSR) Program is seeking an intern to participate in the development of communication products and strategies to help address the important questions about designated WSRs focusing on what they mean for visitor experience and surrounding communities.

What you’ll do

The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 established a National Wild and Scenic Rivers System to protect and enhance the free-flowing condition, water quality, and identified “outstandingly remarkable values” (ORVs) of designated rivers and streams throughout the United States. This national system currently consists of over 13,400 miles of 226 designated wild and scenic rivers (WSRs) in 41 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Communicating the diversity of values and protections of these rivers to local communities and the wider public is essential for all people to maintain a relationship with their water resources. The Forest Service Wild and Scenic Rivers Program is seeking an intern to develop communication products and strategies to answer the following questions about designated WSRs.

How does WSR designation differ from wilderness/parks/national recreation areas, etc.?

What does it mean for a visitor to know that they are on a designated WSR or study river?

What do outstandingly remarkable values, known as ORVs, mean for the local community? The intern will have the opportunity to coordinate with both local river managers and the communications task team from the Interagency Wild and Scenic Rivers Coordinating Council.

What you’ll learn

The intern will have both networking and professional development opportunities throughout the project. This includes connecting with an intern cohort and receiving guidance on future job opportunities with federal land management agencies.

Our program has hosted VSFS interns before and we are grateful for the perspective each student brings. We appreciate your interest in this project!
