Health Research, Inc. (HRI) is seeking a currently enrolled graduate student to work in its Manhattan or Albany, NY locations as an hourly employee to the New York State Health Commissioner, Dr. Mary Bassett. This position will be located within the New York State Department of Health (DOH). In this position, the incumbent will work closely with Dr. Bassett and other senior DOH staff on new and ongoing projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent will conduct background research on variety of health-related topics, synthesize published research, journal articles, data reports, and other publications to produce memos and other products to assist with new or ongoing Department of Health activities. The incumbent will also assist with planning and organization of the Commissioner’s Medical Grand Rounds program, as well as provide planning/operational support for other Office of the Commissioner special projects and DOH activities.
DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position will begin summer 2022 and it is anticipated to last through May 2023. The incumbent must be available to work full-time over the summer (37.5 hours per week), and part-time (up to 20 hours/week) over two or more days per week during the academic year.

Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations, and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of newcomer youth and their communities in New York City. The Education and Learning department provides year round programming working directly with youth, their parents and families, and their schools.
Scope Of Work
The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social emotional learning classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.
The Public Health Intern will work with the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy’s administrative staff to support COVID-19 mitigation measures among students, staff, and families. The Public Health Intern will play a pivotal role in the conduct of contact tracing, health data management, and procurement. They will support educational and operational initiatives within the Academy to do with public health and safety.

Responsibilities
- Complete all staff training, as well as participating in program meetings and staff development activities thereafter

- Assist with preparation of educational materials for families around COVID Safety & Orientation to NYSA
- Develop educational materials around COVID protocols and safety for NYSA families
- Liase with members of the on-site interpretation team as well as IRC community interpreters to ensure outreach materials are translated into high incidence languages
- Place and field calls from families & individuals on testing, isolation and quarantine related to COVID-19
- Coordinate with NYSA staff around Contact Tracing needs & next steps
- Point person for students who report exposure on their Daily Health Screening, or become symptomatic while at the program. Coordinate contact home & next steps to NYSA Instructional staff.
- Support Operations team on procurement of COVID-19 mitigation supplies
- Provide support to parents and caregivers, connecting them with teachers, the student support team or other Newcomer Youth Summer Academy personnel as needed
- Assist in enrolling new students into the Academy in compliance with IRC policies and procedures

POSITION: Summer Intern – Department of Health Education

Public Health and Racial Justice Program for Black Youth in NYC
Program Information:
The Mount Sinai Department of Health Education is proud to offer The Public Health and Racial Justice Program, an innovative health education and empowerment program for high-school aged Black youth in NYC. Over the course of a 6-week, fully remote session, participants learn about the expansive field of public health through a racial justice lens, and explore the roles that Black leadership and Black activism play in fighting against oppression and for greater health equity.
A group of ten youth program participants meet each morning under the guidance of four program facilitators, Monday through Thursday, from 10-11:30am, engaging in learning, critical analysis, civic engagement, creative expression, emotional processing, and reflection.
The 2022 summer session will cover the following public health topics through a racial justice lens:

Internship Position Information:
Interns have always been a critical component of our program’s success, and we appreciate and depend on them greatly. The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) Government Affairs is seeking a Government Affairs and Public Policy intern from May through August. Each year, Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) hosts full-time public health interns to explore public health careers by participating in projects related to epidemiology, clinical services, public health, Indigenous evaluation, and research within urban American Indian/Alaska Native populations. In addition to working with us, interns learn about partner organizations including the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) where they tour the labs and shadow DOH public health professionals.
Why do we have interns?
The internship program creates a space for Native students to build their skills and knowledge of public health and helps train the next generation of public health workers in Decolonizing Data.
The goal is to create a larger network of Native public health students ready to join the workforce and work in Native communities across the nation.
The internship seeks to foster and affirm the identities and knowledge of the next generation of American Indian and Alaska Native public health professionals. POSITION: Student Researcher (Part Time)

Diabetes Prevention for Black Caribbean Communities in New York City
Project Description: This public health project explores whether a community participatory web-based Type 2 Diabetes prevention program using wireless scales and fitness trackers can effectively influence lifestyle, diet and physical activity knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in Black Caribbean communities in NYC; and automate wireless data collection. We aim to 1) Adapt the CDC’s PreventT2 Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) curriculum materials to an online/remote format using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach; and 2) Test the feasibility and efficacy of an online and smart-device enhanced DPP lifestyle intervention to ensure that it is culturally relevant for Black Caribbean participants.
The project will be informed by a) an expert advisory board consisting of community members, and nutrition and health experts who represent and/or have significant cultural competence collaborating with the Black Caribbean communities in New York City; b) focus groups with community members who will review current materials from the CDC’s PreventT2 curriculum materials; and c) a volunteer student research team.
Primary Responsibilities:
Specific duties include (but may not be limited to):
- Manage meeting schedules
- Participate in the preparation of IRB application(s)
- Recruit participants in person, via phone calls, social media, and over email
- Schedule focus groups, distribution of program materials and participant gift cards etc.

POSITION: Intern

Background
This NIH-funded study, the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) aims to improve SARS CoV-2 testing options for New York city residents living in public housing developments. Specifically, RADx-Up team members engage New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents and front-line community based organizations to collectively identify and then test models of delivering acceptable COVID-19 testing options. The ultimate goal is to identify effective strategies to reduce COVID inequities in a large, high-need population. Findings will be used to develop guidance for public housing settings nationally.
This project began as Phase I in October 2020. Now in Phase II, we will testing outreach methods to provide rapid antigen at-home COVID-19 testing kits and recommendations on when to test to youth and young/adult NYCHA residents, as well as socially isolated older adults. Prior to receiving at-home test kits, participants will be required to complete a baseline survey, either through telephone or electronically. To understand socializing and testing practices, participants will complete 5 brief follow-up surveys, once a week, for a total of 5 weeks.
Position Overview
We are seeking intrepid student interns to assist with data collection. This position entails administering surveys to participants over the phone, tracking survey completion, attending community organization meetings and community events, and following up with participants who are missing survey responses or need additional assistance to complete surveys electronically. Interns may assist in data quality assurance and will be trained in data collection tools such as REDCap. This is a great opportunity for those interested in data collection and the experiences of individuals in underserved communities.
Hours
~20 hours/week during the Summer. Flexible daytime and evening hours. Option to stay with project for longer.

Position: Summer Fieldwork Placement for the CUNY SPH Office of Career Services
Office description:
The CUNY SPH Office of Career Services is a student services department dedicated to providing SPH graduate students and alumni with the tools and resources necessary to successfully secure jobs and manage their careers. The Office also works to build relationships between employers and the SPH community to help develop talent pipelines. The office serves all SPH students in both the degree and advanced certificate programs as well as alumni up to one year following completion of their program via coaching appointments and all alumni regardless of time from completion via our events, job postings, and communications. Fieldwork Position Overview:

Intermittent Fasting Study
Context of the Project: Intermittent fasting and restrictive eating have emerged as promising weight management modalities and cardiometabolic risk reduction strategies. However, current protocols do not account for cultural preferences and diversity alternatives. The Intermittent Fasting Inclusion Survey (IFIS) intends to gauge and test consumer preferences for the optimal approach to intermittent fasting regarding the timing of eating, meal format, and diet pattern.
The objective of the survey is to gauge the preference of Black and Latino populations in New York City regarding timing and diet format that is tailored to cultural preferences regarding intermittent fasting
The task for the fieldwork research opportunity is to develop an intermittent fasting community needs assessment survey and field it as a pilot study under the mentorship of Professors Terry Huang and Ghada Soliman. Description and duties: The BMCC Learning Academy is looking for a graduate student in a health profession field who has confidence and moderate experience developing curriculum materials (e.g. lesson plans, slide decks, activities, etc.). This part-time, temporary position is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in health education, communication/training in health professions, and healthcare pathways in higher education.
The BMCC Learning Academy, an academic cohort program, was built during a five-year Title V grant and offers BMCC students small caseload advisement, transfer exploration and support, and success seminars from entry to graduation. The Health Professions Curriculum Specialist will use success seminar materials (e.g. syllabi, lesson plans, and activities) the Learning Academy has already developed to create versions of the seminar curricula appropriate for health professions students. The seminars are 12-weeks, no credit, and led by academic advisors, and they are designed to build academic and professional skills and a sense of community among students.
Qualifications: Currently enrolled in graduate work in a health professions field (e.g. public health, social work, nursing). Experience and/or familiarity with curriculum writing with an understanding of multiple health disciplines. Independent work ethic, but comfortable working with a team. Excellent writing and visual communication skills. Organized, detail-oriented, open to feedback, and deadline-attentive.

POSITION: Communications Intern (Summer)
ORGANIZATION: The City of New York’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU)
The City of New York’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU) was created in 2015 to serve New Yorkers in historically underserved neighborhoods and connect them to key City services, using innovative methods of proactive outreach. PEU’s model has proven particularly critical in the midst of the global pandemic, a severe economic crisis, and now a challenging recovery. By combining proactive outreach, long term case management, and an interagency approach, PEU breaks down bureaucratic barriers to better serve those who are struggling with a range of hardships – from landlord harassment, homelessness, housing insecurity and eviction, to lack of health insurance, food insecurity, and much more.
PEU’s programs are delivered by four outreach teams:
- GetCoveredNYC: Helps enroll New Yorkers in health insurance, including low- and no-cost coverage.
- Home Support Unit: Helps New Yorkers in homeless shelters find and move into permanent, stable housing.
- Tenant Support Unit: Helps keep tenants secure in their homes by connecting them to rent freeze and homeowner tax exemption programs, anti-eviction and repair resources, and access to NYC’s Right to Counsel program.
- Special Projects Team: The Special Projects Team works on quick response projects, such as Hurricane Ida outreach, as well as support projects that fall outside of PEU’s core programs, such as the Student Voter Registration Drive during Civics Week.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Scanning and compiling daily media reports for stories relevant to PEU’s core work
- Drafting social media content for PEU channels
- Creating social media toolkits for agency and community partners
- Designing social media graphics and flyers to be distributed by PEU outreach teams
- Generating and revising copy for websites when needed
- Supporting the development of press releases, statements, advisories, columns, op-eds, talking points, and internal briefings
- Tracking and circulating relevant news clips to various PEU team members
- Entering, tracking and analyzing data
- Working with translators on content translation and proofreading
- Joining team meetings and program planning sessions and supporting with notetaking and follow up
- Supporting outreach efforts to New Yorkers through remote outreach tactics, including peer-to-peer texting, phonebanking and relational organizing
- Assisting staff with special projects
Qualifications:
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment
- Willingness to learn, adapt and problem solver
- Experience with social media in a professional setting is an asset
- Graphic design, video, or photography experience is a plus, but not required for this experience

POSITION: AAPF Summer Fellowship
ORGANIZATION: The African American Policy Forum (AAPF)
The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is seeking a cohort of highly motivated individuals for its 2022 Summer Fellowship Program!
The AAPF Summer Fellowship is a nine-week remote fellowship starting Wednesday, June 15, 2022 and ending Friday, August 19, 2022. The Fellowship is a project-based program committed to providing meaningful research and skills-based opportunities to dedicated individuals. Fellows will gain first-hand experience in non-profit think tank operations, gaining insight into community organizing, research, and policy analysis.
Applications from undergraduate students, graduate and law students, and post-docs will be considered. Fellows will work full time (35-40 hrs/wk). A stipend will be provided.
The ideal candidate should have:
- Scholarly understanding of Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality;
- Familiarity with Kimberlé Crenshaw’s work;
- Familiarity with AAPF’s programs and initiatives;
- Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite;
- Basic proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.);
- Experience in multidisciplinary research;
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a dynamic environment;
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills;
- Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.
