POSITION: Senior Project Director, Public Opinion and Survey Research
ORGANIZATION: Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF)
Position Summary:
KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation), a non-profit organization, is a leader in health policy analysis, polling and survey research, health journalism, and communications. KFF serves as a non-partisan source of facts, information, and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the public.
The Public Opinion and Survey Research Group plays a central role in KFF’s work by undertaking original research on the public’s attitudes, beliefs, and experiences related to health policy and other issues. Working independently or in partnership with major media organizations like The Washington Post and CNN, the group examines Americans’ opinions on major health and social policy challenges in order to amplify the public’s voice in national debates. One example of this is the COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor, which has become a go-to resource for understanding the U.S. public’s attitudes and experiences with COVID-19 vaccinations.
KFF’s public opinion work has always had a focus on representing historically marginalized communities who may rely on informal networks for health care and information given historic and contemporary mistreatment by institutions. We have recently received a large grant to support a multi-year effort to further expand the focus of our survey work on highlighting racial and ethnic disparities and the experiences of underrepresented populations. We are seeking a qualified candidate for a Senior Project Director to lead this initiative (salary and benefits for this position are supported by the core KFF budget and not through the grant). This initiative will include repeated large surveys of people of color, including Black adults, Hispanic adults, and Asian adults, in addition to surveys focused on other underrepresented populations including immigrants and those with lower incomes. The project will aim to shed light on the health care experiences of these individuals, as well as the broader context of their economic circumstances, attitudes and opinions, and experiences with racism and discrimination. The Senior Project Director will play a foundational role in establishing the project’s focus and methods and will manage the day-to-day operations of the project, working closely with members of KFF’s Public Opinion and Survey Research team as well as our Program on Racial Equity and Health Policy.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background as a survey researcher, extensive experience with probability-based surveys of hard-to-reach populations, and a strong knowledge of the U.S. health policy environment and issues of health equity.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee research design and execution for surveys conducted as part of the project;
- Collaborate with survey methodology team on decisions about survey sampling, data collection modes, weighting, and other research design considerations;
- Lead the design of survey questionnaires based on research objectives;
- Oversee and perform quantitative and statistical analysis of survey data;
- Prepare clear and concise written reports communicating survey findings and insights to KFF’s audience of journalists, policymakers, and the general public;
- Collaborate and communicate with internal and external stakeholders; and
- Represent KFF as a spokesperson at external events and with the media.
Minimum Required Expertise and Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in social science or quantitative discipline such as survey methodology, statistics, political science, communications, sociology, or public policy;
- Extensive (minimum 5 years) survey research or public opinion polling experience, including end-to-end knowledge of the survey research process (questionnaire design, sampling, statistical analysis, data reporting, etc.);
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to understanding and researching issues of health care disparities, racial inequity, social justice, and related issues;
- Superb written and verbal communications skills, including demonstrated experience writing and speaking about quantitative data for a lay audience;
- Very strong quantitative and data analysis skills;
- Extensive experience with research methods, including survey design and statistical evaluation of data;
- Experience with SPSS, R, or other statistical analysis software;
- A desire to work in a fast-paced environment producing timely and policy-relevant research; and
- A proven ability to work in a collaborative environment with team members from diverse backgrounds.
This full-time position will be based either at KFF’s headquarters in San Francisco, CA or its Washington, DC office. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications, and includes an excellent benefits package.
