POSITION: Graduate Student Fellowships

Organization:

The New York Community Trust (The Trust) is offering four fellowships for full-time graduate students. The Trust, established in 1924, is a community foundation with assets of almost $3.5 billion. It is a grantmaking foundation dedicated to improving the lives of residents of New York City and its suburbs. We bring together individuals, families, foundations, and businesses to build a better community and support nonprofits that make a difference. Fellowship Eligibility and Details:

  • Applicants must be in a full-time graduate program.
  • Applicants must have existing authorization to work in the United States.
  • This is a temporary and time-limited Fellowship. It starts in May 2022 (date flexible) and ends in May 2023. Fellows must commit to the entire period.
  • Fellowship pay is $22 an hour (no fringe benefits).
  • Fellows work up to 35 hours a week from May 2022 through August 2022 and, to accommodate class schedules, 15 to 20 hours a week between September 2022 to May 2023.
  • Fellows must remain enrolled as full-time graduate students for the entire Fellowship.
  • Fellows’ field of graduate study must match an aspect of the Fellowship.
  • Fellowships are intended as learning experiences to complement Fellows’ graduate study.
  • This is not an entry-level position at The Trust or intended to lead to one.
  • The New York Community Trust follows Federal, State, and Local requirements regarding COVID-19 and other airborne diseases. The Fellow will work on-site at The Trust’s midtown offices and adhere to indoor workplace rules and protocols. This is not a virtual or remote position.

Promising Futures (Fellowship 1)

Trust grants build promising futures by helping young people prosper; provide job training and placement; make our educational and justice systems work for everyone; alleviate hunger and homelessness; improve family and child welfare services; strengthens arts education; and address the unique needs of girls and young women.

Thriving Communities (Fellowship 2)

Trust grants protect and create affordable housing, promote equity in the arts, improve civic engagement, and protect our environment. The Trust supports agencies working on these issues at the neighborhood level, as well as government and nonprofit institutions developing and influencing policy. Grants also support efforts to improve the functioning of nonprofits and government.

Healthy Lives (Fellowship 3)

Trust grants develop the skills, improve independence, and enhance the quality of life of older adults and people with disabilities. And, as health care changes, The Trust helps health and social service providers deliver efficient, cost-effective services to all New Yorkers. It also advances the practice of social work. Grants support projects that improve the quality of care, strengthen providers, and address costs and health disparities.

Marketing and Communications (Fellowship 4)

The Marketing and Communications Fellow will help share and publicize The Trust’s work. This is a dynamic role that provides a deep understanding of nonprofit communications and marketing in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. Through a range of assignments, the Fellow will learn about promising work being done by leading nonprofits across a wide range of issues facing New York City and beyond.

Requirements and Responsibilities:

The three program Fellows (Fellowship 1 to 3) will be exposed to all areas of Trust grantmaking:

proposal review, grant investigation and analysis, site visits (virtual, if appropriate), writing grant

recommendations, and reviewing reports. A major responsibility is monitoring grantee performance and writing of interim and final progress reports. Candidates must have strong writing skills; a background in one or more of the focus areas; an ability to communicate orally and in writing with nonprofit and/or grantee staff and leadership; the capacity to work independently and in a timely manner; and function within a professional office environment. Fellows work under the supervision of program officers for each area.

The Marketing and Communications Fellow’s (Fellowship 4) work will include, but not be limited to, writing press releases, print, and online stories about our grantees and other initiatives; producing social media content for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram; conducting research related to marketing and communications; interviewing grantees and donors over the phone and in person when possible; and archiving content. The Fellow should have excellent writing, proofreading, and research skills; a commitment to detail and accuracy; strong organizational skills; an ability to work both independently and as a team member. Knowledge of New York City, interest in philanthropy and the nonprofit world preferred. Helpful skills include: photography, videography, and past experience with website, social media, and advertising analytics; and a sense of humor. The Fellow will work under the supervision of the marketing and communications team.

CUNY Citizenship Now! We are the largest university legal assistance program in the nation, providing free and confidential citizenship and immigration law services. POSITION: Digital Research Fellowship
ORGANIZATION: CUNY Mexican Studies Institute, Research Foundation of The City University of New York (CUNY)

Lehman College is looking for a part time Digital Research Fellow for the Mexican Studies Institute. Reporting directly to the Academic Director, the Digital Research Fellow will have primary responsibility for conducting academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop research plans and proposals and participate in acquiring funding,
  • Collect, analyze, and assure validity of data,
  • Write progress reports; write and publish findings,
  • Collaborate with internal and external colleagues,
  • Adhere to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct academic research associated with the Institute’s work; assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research associated with the Institute’s work.
  • Research, build, and maintain the Institute’s audio, digital, and paper archives, and provide access to the archive and research assistance to visiting scholars.
  • Support the Institute’s core activities by researching and applying for grants.

POSITION: Multiple – Postdoc and Research Assistants
ORGANIZATION: CUNY School of Medicine

These positions are for individuals with academic background in psychology, social work, or public health. Past experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research and manuscript development/publication (and if possible, program evaluation) are preferred, with an interest in adolescent/young adult mental/behavioral health services research.

The postdoc will be supported through Dr. Wenhua Lu’s SAMHSA grant with an aim to evaluate the programming of clinical practices of a community center located in NYC, but the responsibilities will not be restricted to the SAMHSA project. The postdoc can start either June or September, 2022, and it will be a one-year position with the possibility of renewing for another year. The annual salary will be around $54,000 for a full-time postdoc ($38 hours per week).

For part-time RA with a master’s degree, the pay will be $46.69 per hour. The part-time RA can start immediately and can work 10 to 20 hours per week depending on availability. 

The main responsibilities for both positions will include data collection, data analysis, manuscript development, and assistance with grant writing and program evaluation.

There is no location restrictions for the RA and postdoc positions, though preferences will be given to those who live in or near NYC.

POSITION: Part Time Caregiver Positions

Our caregiver / companion positions can be an excellent developmental opportunity for postgraduate and graduate students who are passionate about supporting others. Our positions pay $18-20 per hour, and they commonly require a weekly time commitment of 10-30 hours per week (usually 4-8 hours at a time for 2 or more days per week).  Historically, we have had the highest degree of mutual interests from postgraduate programs in the social sciences, health professions, and arts & humanities. Full Job Description

POSITION: Health Policy Podcast Fellowship
ORGANIZATION: Project Hope – Health Affairs

The Health Affairs Podcast Fellowship is an exciting program for U.S.-based applicants. The program is intended for early or mid-early stage career individuals with an interest in health policy and storytelling to pursue an audio project with support of their employer, school, or as a freelancer to dedicate the time and resources to complete their project.

The program is intended to support applicants who have an audio project in mind to inform and educate the public. Applicants should have a working knowledge of the topic and an idea of what’s needed to complete their project (interviews, data needed, field recordings, etc.).

2022 is the second year of the program. The first cohort published their project on the Health Affairs Pathways podcast channel.

In the program, fellows will produce a three-episode podcast series using interviews, background briefs, public data, Health Affairs research, and other materials to tell the story. Final episodes must be a minimum of 15- minutes long for a minimum total of 45 minutes of audio for the program. Fellows should not produce more than 60 minutes of audio total.

Health Affairs welcomes candidates to apply who are U.S.-based print or radio journalists, freelance storytellers, recent college graduates, solo-preneurs, and/or academics.

The fellowship is designed to enable fellows to work independently on a self-guided project over a seven-month period (May 2022 to December 2022) to produce an a three-episode podcast series for Health Affairs. The program allows space for collaboration and feedback through group workshops in addition to 1:1 meetings with mentors from Health Affairs.

Applicants may apply as a group project. The expected output, compensation, timelines, etc. is the same for an individual or group project.

Each applicant should have a format in mind when applying. Potential formats can include:

  • Interview-based podcast
  • Explainer episodes on a health policy topic
  • Field reporting on a health policy story
  • Deep dive into an historical health policy moment

Selected fellows will need to be available for workshops and seminars. Health Affairs fellowship mentors will provide support and guidance throughout the fellowship period, but the project is largely self-guided. Health Affairs will own the copyright to the podcast episodes.

The expected time commitment for the fellowship is about 125-180 hours which is estimated at 6 hours per week for the duration of the fellowship program.

The time commitment is as follows:

5% – Administration

25% – Research, Writing, and Preparation

20% – Capturing Audio

25% – Editing

Health Affairs will provide workshops to further develop the fellows’ skills and gain exposure to market leading producers, editors, and content marketers.

POSITION: Health Communication Intern
ORGANIZATION: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The External and Employee Relations Branch (EERB) within the Office of the Associate Director for Communication at CDC is looking for two (2) Health Communication Interns to provide internal communication support. These positions are paid and will begin immediately through the end of August.

EERB is responsible for providing leadership for employee communications and employee engagement activities. Employee communication is a critical component of improving communication and the overall image of an organization. Employee engagement includes activities designed to build sound relationships between an organization and its employees. Both are critical elements in fostering positive opinions and behaviors of employees as ambassadors for the organization.  Employee communication projects and activities support CDC’s day-to-day mission and are critical in providing timely and updated information during emergency public health response activities.

Continued funding for two health communication interns is needed to provide internal communication support to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Duties will include:

  • Writing content in support of the agency’s internal website, CDC Connects, designed to help educate staff on CDC’s activities and available resources;
  • Supporting the COVID-19 response and developing key stories and messages to educate the workforce on the state of the pandemic response.
  • Assisting with a variety of internal communication, including researching, writing and editing stories, conducting interviews with key CDC staff and subject matter experts, publishing stories through CDC Connects software, assisting with covering internal events and conveying employee communication messages related to COVID-19 and other agency priorities.
  • Creating and posting content on CDC Now, an agency-wide mobile App communication tool, to provide timely information and updates on COVID-19 to staff; and
  • Contributing to employee engagement activities where needed, including the CDC 75th Anniversary.
